Does anybody know this guy? I'm guessing many here don't even have a clue who I'm talking about & I shouldn't say it but I'm going to:
He's from MMA.
Ok ok don't bite my head off. Stop right there. STOP! Just listen to me ok. I know many Boxing fans don't like MMA I don't know why maybe they feel threatened but MMA - like boxing - its an art and there are many more styles than you know - Point in fact: Lyoto Machida. A man who entered the ground and pound MMA system and has quite literally destoyed the belief that G&P was the superior fighting art form - he has embarrassed MMA's G&P absoute best with his fists. With his counter punching boxing skillset.
He's no Mayweather for sure. No Calzaghe no Hopkins or RJJ but he has talent & has used that talent to sweep through the MMA rankings. Actually he's specialism is Karate but he uses that skillset to fight in a counter punching style very reminiscent of how Bernard Hopkins sets people up; he lets them come to him, open up and he counters. Or feigns and counters. Often with devastating results just checkout his fights with Rashad Evans and Silva.
If he's fighting you really should watch him guys he has talent with his fists. MMA and boxing needn't be enemies. To me both are fantastic entertainment and both have lazy fighters and both have tremendously talented and committed fighters and both operate rock/paper/sciccors (A beats B who beats C who beats A etc).
Here is Machida & Evans @ Weigh In

Lyoto has a lot in common with Marquez counter puncher, Latino, quiet, and urine therapy. This thread should be in another forum as it does not really have much to do with boxing.

i've seen him and he does nothing reminicent of a boxer he is pure Karate which is a defensive art when used the right way. and he uses it the right way. i've alwasy said any good martial artist would beat those MMA guys. just like any good boxer. . Machida is very skilled in that art form. and you can see the disparity in class even against taltented guys like Evans and other MMA fighters. if more martial artist got into mma then i would watch it but most see it as garbage and uncueth. as the main purpose for Martial arts is for defence, MInus a few Style like Ishin RU and a few others that that specialize in the art of breaking bones and hurting or diabling your foe. thos practioners would literly kill an Mma fighter in a few seconds they fight to hurt not to win. I know this becaus my father is a Black belt in Ishin Ru and as well as Judo as well as a few other styles.

It started as a martial arts tournment which includes all kinds of style from kung fu to karate to bjj etc. We all know what happen then.. BJJ prove to be the best style when it comes to fighting. Now many MMA fighter are well rounded in just about every style you can imagine.

I'll preface this by admitting that I am very deficient in MMA knowledge, but let me ask this.
Is the emergence of someone like a Machida maybe proof that some of this "well rounded" stuff has backfired to a degree in MMA? At the top levels of an sport or profession, you begin to see specialization take over. It's why a pure boxer doesn't try to brawl face first, and why the great pressure fighters don't sit back and counter. Why wouldn't someone who is highly skilled in specific techniques or abilities, and equal in areas like conditioning, hold a clear edge over somebody who is just "pretty good" at doing a bunch of different things?

Well you can be the best wrestler who are mostly well condition and you fight someone who knows bjj(doesn't have to be a black belt)-but also does karate and boxing etc and he might end up winning cuz he can fight on his feet and if he gets taken down he knows enough to defend himself or even submit his wrestler opponent.
An example of this is Tito Ortiz vs Lyoto Machida.. Ortiz is a great wrestler but his striking and submission is not as good where machida is well rounded. He can strike (karate) and he knows bjj.

What is the point of this thread? How is this more pertinent to the Boxing Forum than the MMA Forum?

Hi Sarah
Yes i know Lyoto very well. He's an incredible fighter - perhaps my favourite in all MMA. The comparison with JMM is very nice :)
I think Machida's spatial awareness & striking accuracy is spot on but that is pretty much an elementary skill in boxing. It only stands out in MMA because the fighters are technically horrible when it comes to "stand up".
Plus I would say it not necessarily one or the other just because you enjoy boxing doesnt mean you automatically have to hate MMA. Obviously most of us here are boxing fans but Im sure plenty enjoy MMA as a spectacle/artform

i t started with one guy who prefected his style over a life time against a bunch of euro's or americans that don't use the original practice of the arts they fight in. in that tournament they used it offensively when most of the style they studied in were primarily Defensive arts. there for they failed you hardley see a true master compete in those tournaments in the begining let alone now.

Machida is great. I love when he smells bloods, since his last two fight, he go crazy and go finish the guy like Fedor.

Lyoto is good, maybe even great. But does that speak to him or the maturity of MMA? MMA is in its infancy. Used to be Martial Arts was an amateur dead end or hobby. As the purses get bigger and the "career path" becomes clearer you will begin to see some real BEASTS emerge. Dudes who have been training since childhood.
Right now, there are only a few guys that impress with their balance, timing, judging of distance, ring smarts, etc... and make you say "Wow!" There are a bunch of "tough guys" though, hahaha. Lyoto and Anderson Silva come to mind. (Vandlerlei my personal favorite! MMA's Mike Tyson!!!!!) In the end I think all roads lead to striking though.
Just my take on it...

It simply doesnt work. In order to be succesful in MMA you need to know what your bread and butter is and EXCEL at that. What we have now is a bunch of guys average in everything and not great at one thing.
In the days of old fighters would have one distinctive MA and compliment that with other aspects like sub defense, striking, grappling, submmisions etc but they never deviated from what they did best and dont need to. Thats what made Big Nog CC Fedor Barnett etc all time greats.
