Used to wrestle in a top 5 program here in Georgia. Finally decided to get back into shape 5 years into college. So I looked up the boxing gyms here in Atlanta. There were a few ones that were MMA oriented, but I was looking for the real stuff taught by real boxers. With a little research, I ended joining up Art of Boxing and am currently training with Johnny Gant in Atlanta.
I started training around May, and had to take June and July off because of a sprained rotator cuff.
My usual workouts last 2-3 hours: (3 min rounds w/ 30 sec break)
EDIT: 6' 154 lbs (70kg) will fight in the 152 welterweight division
4 rd Rope
4 rd Shadowboxing
4 rd Heavybag
4 rd Speedbag
4 rd working the mitts w/ Johnny Gant
4 rd Heavybag
circuit train this stuff:
4x75 incline situps
then
4x speedbag or 4x shadowboxing or 4x 30+ shoulder raises w/ light weights(side, front, and waist to chin)
I usually do pushups in the morning, but I've had my left shoulder start giving me problems again. I'm going to hold off on the running because....
I absolutely loathe it, and I still smoke cigarettes lol. I plan on resuming running once an event comes up.
Real cool combo I just started throwing:
Jab, Right uppercut, Right, Left Hook, Right, Double Jab, Right, Sidestep

Went into the gym again today at around 6 this evening.
Did the usual 15 mins or so of stretches, I really don't want to mess up my rotator cuff again. Seriously if I messed it up as bad as I did again, I would probably just hang them up for good.
4x rope
4x shadow
4x heavybag
4x speedbag (keep both hands up, I usually go 8 for each hand, or 2 for each hand. I think hitting the bag once per hand is gay.)
Watched our 132 go at it with some kids from another gym. Schooled son....
4x heavybag
4x 75 incline situps -mixed in with
4x 25 side
4x 25 front
4x 25 waist to chin shoulder raises
4x shadow
Left shoulder is still kinda shaky so I have been laying off the hooks on the heavybag. Although I have to say it does feel a lot better. This has been my routine 5-6 days a week for the past 3 months. This last month I decided to throw my last bit of cash, to work the mitts with JG. Overall the experience has been great, and I can't wait to start sparring and competing. My trainer says he doesn't make any short stops in the amateurs and he only goes to big competitions, so sounds like I'm headed in the right direction.

Shoulders have been bothering me still, now its both of them kinda sucks. Been laying off the hooks on the heavybag. Found out there is the state PAL tourney here in ATL. JG says he'll see if I'm ready after I start sparring. Tells me I gotta stop smoking cigarettes, so I plan on cutting down a lot and throwing in some road work. October 10th here I come.

4x 25 waist to chin shoulder raises
1 Marlboro light peace.
Looks solid mate. Quitting smoking is something you will not regret, I guarantee you that much. I smoked for 13 years, in hindsight the most pointless and damaging thing I did my entire life.

Took Friday off, cause I stayed up till 11 am, went to class and passed out. Went in today to do a workout. Gym usually closes at 3 on sat., but C will let me get my workout in.

Ya I know RDJ, I almost quit smoking when I was doing 3 miles. I just couldn't inhale doing the cardio, but a lot of the things I do reinforce my habit. I play the online poker made bout 350 yesterday, and I just can't stop when I play. I'll tell you what though, smoking reds instead of lights really killed me today.

Shoulders still little sore, laying off the hooks still. Been taking 2 advil 2-3 times a day. Sometimes my chest spazzes out its kinda horrifying. Sometimes when I inhale, my chest starts doing this cramping number, so I start taking really short breaths lol weird. But then again this has been happening for a while now, probably because of the cigarette smoke

So my left shoulder is definately messed up. I was working the mitts with JG and during the 2nd round, my left shoulder lost all its strength. I could barely lift it to throw a hook, and the speed on my jabs was getting slower and slower. This is really troubling me, cause I don't know what I need to do. I've been taking 6 advil a day, and icing down 2-3 times a day for 20 mins.

Hopefully these arnold presses strengthen my rotator cuff a bit. Kinda disheartening to not be able to throw punches with one arm.

Took Friday off cause my shoulders needed a break. Went in today and still sore in my rotator cuff. I can tell its my rotator cause when I lift my arm up w/ thumb up its fine, but when I raise the shoulder out to the side its a little aggrivated. Little sore so decided to forgoe the heavy bag again today.

Skipped Friday, went in today looking to go easy on the left hand. Just shadowboxed leisurely, concentrating on balance and technique. By my 7th round of shadowboxing, the shoulder pooped out. Strangely enough I can hit the speedbag just fine.

Got my first sparring session in today. Got my ticket to spar with our 132 lb'er. Got almost 20 lbs on the guy. He's a 4 time state champ, and definately has some skills. I don't think I landed a jab on him, even though I got the reach advantage. Landed some rights, uppercuts and straights. I was winded about a minute into the 2nd round. He's a cool kid, and I told him I wouldn't try to bomb. These past two weeks I've been bad about cigarettes, smoking over a pack most days. Gotta start running thats for sure.

You will still notice that I haven't hit the heavybag in awhile, shoulder is still shaky. Luckily the storm will pass tomorrow, and I plan on embarking on a crusade against a terrible evil. That evil is cardio, and I WILL jog at least 3 miles tomorrow after my workout. I don't know how this will work out. Basically my schedule is like this:
Breakfast 9-10am
Class 10-3pm
Gym anywhere from 5-7 or 8
Dinner 9
The problem is while I can never eat after a workout, I'm thoroughly drained after going into my gym. Should I try to jog 3 right after my workout, or do it after dinner? In high school we usually did this right after practice, so I guess it can't be that bad. Let me know what you guys think.

... some bad news, weighed in for the first time in awhile. This is the same scale I used to weigh in before, and I'm 14 lbs overweight. 168! a super middleweight haha. My awful schedule and eating 1 or 2 big meals of fast food after 9 pm is the culprit. Seriously I eat more BurgerKing than James Toney after a KO win.
Solution will be to go back to my old eating habits, which are sandwiches I make at home with some tomatoes w salt. Might do the two meal a day thing if I'm going to fight sometime soon.

Walked into my boxing gym for the first time last friday. Felt good, but I can tell I lost a lot of work on the speedbag. That being said I still make that thing cry, just my arms get little tired, but I'm sure I'll regain stamina. Plan on running 4 miles a day, not this week but next week.
Currently 6' 163 lbs.

Still going strong on my routine in previous post, 5days a week. Forgot to mention I'm on this crazy diet. I basically eat as much as I want, but not whatever I want.
Breakfast:
1/2-1lb of grapes
1 cup of nuts
only water
Lunch:
8-10 oz of turkey breast sandwhich meat
3-4 tomatoes
or if i'm in a real hurry to get to my evening sesh i'll grab a sandwhich on wheat from jimmy john's if you guys know what that is
Dinner:
2-3 chicken breasts boiled
3-4 tomatoes
and whatever veggies i got like 1/2 boiled cauliflower or brocolli, maybe some sauteed asparagus.
Anyway this weekend was pretty bad as far as breaking diet goes, but my mom always cooks me some dam good food. Before the weekend, standing weight at 162, i'll be happy if I weight in at 163 monday morning. although my weight goal is 155, i don't really have to make shit. When I do enter into the state tournament i'll just cut back my portions, get down to 155 standing, and then cut the last 3 lbs in water ez.
peace

Just glad this week is over wow! This regime I put myself through really puts some serious strain on my body, but its nothing I haven't done before. I'm pretty damn solid right now, but I'm not losing any more weight. At 6' 162 lb, I think I'm at a good place right now. When the time calls for it, I'll drop to 155 by cutting down my portions. Right now my motto is, eat as much as you want, but don't eat whatever I want.
Worked on a lot of defensive stuff today. Slips, parries, rolls, pivoting. I think defense is my weak link. I'm really getting a good feel for the defensive stuff. Once I get really fluid with the defensive stuff, allsigotstodo is get good at countering.
Peace
P.S. By the way, on previous post I was concerned about what I would weight in at on monday morning. I basically ate a fuckton of carbs and was happy as shit. Lets see, Sat. ate lots of dumplings and noodles, and kept eating continually. Dinner had a 14 oz ribeye, baked potato and veggies. Sunday I had those dumplings again dam so gewd, and some noodles. Sunday night I had 6 or 7 porkchops among other things, as well as i'd say about 6-8 oz of salmon sashimi. Monday morning weighed in at 161.5, which is a 1/2 lb loss.
This makes me wonder about the carb cutting. I allow myself bread/grain type stuff only at lunch. This is when I go to Jimmy John's a sandwhich shop. WHEAT gogo

Still at it ESB. Monday was a little awkward as far as training goes. Since I was tight on time, I did my boxing workout first, and then headed to my school's gym for my other workout. Unknowingly I only had an hour's worth of time, so I decided to do my 3 miles, and half my ab workout.
Finished my 3 miles on Tuesday, and weighed in at 159 which was pretty crazy seeing as how I was stuck at 162 for 2 weeks. So obviously the next course of action was to eat the 25 hot wings I had in my fridge. You just can't waste food in my book ;D
Today did my usual full workout which is something like 5-6 hours. Weighed in at 161.5 which is lol funny. Whatever I feel great and my boxing stamina is awesome. I'm going 4 full rounds on the heavy bag, with both speed and power, and the 4 rounds on the speedbag at a REALLY fast pace. Shadowboxed 7 rounds GL HF.
ChrisKim47
05-27-2010, 11:05 PM
Yo ESB, whats happenin
Did my workouts in a rush today, which means no sandwhich after conditioning sesh. In a hurry I just stuff 2 powerbars down my mouth and immediately start my boxing workout. Anyway I was at the quik-e-mart checkin out the bars they have (I really dislike using all the protein supplement bullshit cuz i'z azn), and I was looking at this granola type bar for 25 cents. It was like 1/3 the size of the regular powerbar and sat at 170 calories, the powerbar had 270! Thats pretty ridiculous cause powerbars also use this energy mix which is basically just sugar. Pretty impressive powerbar, pretty impressive.
3 miles 9:15~ per mile im guessing felt good cause I didn't have my cig after breakfast.
weighed in at 160.5
3 weightlifting ex's
700 situps
3 sets of shoulder ex's
2 powerbars
4x40 pushups - I can't seem to increase my reps on these, but whatever my workouts put strain on my tri's so I'm not too worried about it.
4x shadow - I do my pushups during the :30 break between my shadowboxing
4x heavybag
4x speedbag
held off on the fullspeed shadowboxing today cause I was pretty lazy, but good thing is my heavybag and speedbag rounds were great. ITS FRIDAY WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT. So glad I only got one more workout this week. Probably going to go to an all you can eat this weekend when I visit my parents. FUK YA WHATCHU KNOW BOUT IT.
ChrisKim47
05-28-2010, 09:24 PM
Did my morning sesh, ran my 3 miles at about 9:45 a mile and weighed 160.5. Again didn't have my cigarette till after the workout. Felt ok, but man I'm so tired. Workout was good feel good, but bam what do you know? I got a half dollar sized blister on my foot under the blister that was already there. Its like my whole foot would just come off. Glad I checked it whoa.
Needless to say I'm taking the afternoon off, and holding off on the evening boxing sesh. I have this empty feeling inside cause I know that workout would have burned a lot of calories, benefited my boxing stamina and such, but put into perspective, I know I would be out for a while if that blister on my foot got any worse.
Just had 2 porkchops and 4 eggs for dinner. Probably going to have a 4th meal while watching boxing tonite. Cheers with beers.

Holla on the holidays ESB har har har.
Did my morning sesh, and was pretty happy about it.
Cleared my 3 miles at a pace of just under 9 min/mile. I was pretty happy about how my blister has healed. As I mentioned before the thing was the size of a half dollar! Went to the CVS pharmacy and picked up these little gems called blister treatment bandages from Dr. Scholl's and some moleskin. The little bandages work miracles! Fortunately the bandaid was a good fit, and it really healed the blister up. I just left it on, put some moleskin over the area, and I could run easily. But putting a new bandaid on every day just dried that thing up, the huge chunk of thick skin just dried up and died, and the new skin underneath isn't tender at all. Brilliant!
Weighed in today at 159, and let me tell ya I got some good grubbin' this weekend. In all I think I had about 4, mayyyybe 5 lbs of top sirloin. Went to the 'Golden Corral' and went to town on some fried fixins all-you-can-eat style. It basically went like this. Fried chicken livers, fried okra, steak, mashed potatoes, and that went on for 3 heaping plates. Then I had 2 servings of some apple pie with ice cream lolz. I really don't know how I lost more than 2 lbs over this weekend. Hey my training must be working I guess!
Boxing gym was closed so I just did 8 rounds of shadowboxing, and in between those I did 4 rounds on the heavybag. Was one of those little 100 lb girly bags.
ChrisKim47
06-02-2010, 12:52 AM
Did my 3 miles at little under 8:45/mile. Pretty happy about that. Weighed in at 158 soaking wet lol! I met my 3 months goal sweet! I plan on adding sprints after my 3 miles soon. But first I need to get these custom fitted running shoes and get my foot blister situation sorted out. So basically I think I'll finish my 3 miles, jog the first straightaway, and then sprint next straightaway, jog the turn ('active rest'), sprint the next straightaway, rinse n repeat until my sprints turn into jogs. Then I'll have my set block of running exercise to build upon.
4x40 pushups mixed in with....
4x shadow
4x heavy bag
4x shadow
4x speed bag
ate the footlong turkey on wheat like i did yesterday, cause it seems like its ok and I got home late. I lost 1.5 lbs so I don't think it'll hurt. Good luck good luck!

Hey ESB, finished my workouts for the week in its entirety. I am pretty happy about it. Ran my miles at 8:45, 9:30, and 9:15/mile on wed, thurs, and today respectively. I hurt my right outer hip area on thursday's run right near the end, so I made sure I kept everything really tight on my jog today. The run was excellent, I felt in great shape afterwards. Did I mention I got some bomb running shoes? I picked them out on Wednesday at a local running store. They are doing things right let me tell ya. They scanned my foot and such, and said I had medium arches in my foot. They let me try on 5 different pairs of shoes. I got these Saucony's for 90$ thanks to the sweet girl giving me a 10% student discount wut! Seriously after I switch out to my regular sneaks, I feel a phantom support for the arches in my foot.
I'll be having my first tournament in July, something called the Georgia Games. I think I have to fight 9 times in the beginner's division before I move to the open division. I'm pretty sure I'll have 9 ko wins.... just saayin man, you gotta see me punch!
Good luck to you all, and see you at the all-you-can-eat cause thats where I'm going.
ChrisKim47
06-11-2010, 04:43 AM
Yo yo, here for my update. Skipped Monday and Tuesday on account of a Wednesday exam. I plan on making up one day on Saturday BLAH. Anyway I ran 8:35 and <8:20/mile on wed. and thurs. respectively. Weighed in at 156 and 154.5 after my runs. I'm pretty happy on the improvement I've made on my run time as well as the progress I've made on my weight. But Monday and Tuesday I was eating shitty. Just powerbars and cashews, and 2 meals max cause i was napping and studying constantly. Wednesday's dinner was good though, 2 boiled chicken breasts and 4 tomatoes plus some cashews later. 156 to 154.5 that seems pretty stable.
I'm doing pretty well on my workouts, but I know I've slowed down a little since last week. I can feel my punch output, speed, and stamina not being on par. But whatever.
Oh yeah I just put down 2 footlong subs from subway just now lol. peace
ChrisKim47
06-12-2010, 06:20 AM
Friday yay! ......... wait still got to make up a workout shit! So its like 5 in the morning, been watching food programs, like always. Man I want to open up my own restaurant down the line sometime, maybe go to culinary school. But right now its like gotta eat healthy, push myself and see how far my body can go. When I can get my routine down to where its not such a bitch, I think the sustain will be like coasting. When that happens I'll be a machine.
So after that double footlong sub fiasco last night I've gained.... 1/4 pound lol. 154.75 after my 3 mile run @ 8:20/mile. I just don't know how tomorrow is gonna play out. I wanted to go to my boxing gym first cause it closes at 3 tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be able to make it now. Maybe I'll just go to my school and do my first workout, and hit up a boxing session over there.
Oh yeah I ate some chinese food for dinner today with the gym's manager. We wanted to go check out this all you can eat, but it closed at 11 right when we got there. After my meal of sichuan chicken, i went over to the taco bell and got the 2 chili cheese burritos. Man the bell has really jacked up their prices. wtfm8
Man just let me put down this one last workout, so I can go to the buffet tomorrow night with my parents with no guilt.
peace esb

ok so i didnt go do my workout on saturday. I just woke up give me a break. I think I'm alright, considering i put in 30 hours a week for 2 months straight. This workout has really done me wonders. I wonder what I would look like if I had no morals and just juiced like a monkey. Anyway I'm off to the buffet, good luck have fun.

OK so I didn't make up a workout on saturday, and I missed Monday as well. I can feel my stamina going down slightly. Ran my 3 miles today at 8:20/mile again, pretty happy about that. Weighed in at 156.75, but whatever.... Good luck to you all good luck to me.

Ran my 3 in 8:25/mile and weighed in at 156. Yesterday and today I down 2 footlong subs from subway LOL. My upper thigh is killing me. I really didn't know if I'd be able to run at all today because that shit was killing me. But I just pushed through it. Its really bad when you're doing the lower ab workouts. Man that shit hurts. good luck wish me luck.

sorry haven't been keeping up with this thing
last week (june 21) worked out twice. Monday the 21st, just did a morning sesh. Ran my 3 miles at 8:10/mile. Wednesday did both workouts. Ran my miles at 8:05 pace. Then I took 5 days off thurs. through monday.
Got back in it to win it.
Tuesday, wednesday, and today I put down both sessions. Ran my miles at 8:30, 8:15, and 8:10 respectively. This little girl burned me today on the track, and it really hurt my feelings. I'll just use it as an incentive to work harder... haha fuck yall. I lost a lot of stamina, but today went surprisingly well comparing it to yesterday. I feel that compared to my peak, which was a week or two back when i was grinding 5 days and 30 hours a week, I'm at better than 90% right around there.
gl to me tomorrow! gl esb

I'm taking the day off cause my left hip is hurting. I probably should have stretched after my workout. I'm positive thats why it hurts. Make sure you guys stretch after you workout! My hips have hurt before, and i've run through it, but you just gotta know when enough is enough. I don't want to put myself back a week or two because of one day. Gl all

Where exactly does it usually hurt?

Hey guys lol. I was supposed to have my first tournament 7-25thish. I decided to go to the casinos in Mississippi beforehand. Made a lot of money and took some time off. Some time meaning almost 10 months now. wow thats a long time. I kept wanting to go back to the gym, but I was just feeling so lazy, even after 2 months of doing nothing. Wow I'm a fat POS.
Gotta start from scratch again. I've been playing online poker since the start of January, after I graduated from GT. Made a little money, but then this FBI thing went down, and now I'm putting my gambling freakout on hold. (I decided to enroll in a few more classes to delay the inevitable 9 to 5). Ill be 25 here pretty soon.... I felt like my last shot at this boxing thing, was my last break and start. This is really it.
Just started moving into my new place, and will finish up tomorrow. Got 3 projects due next week. Have run 1 mile twice in the past 4 days, did my first weight training on tuesday. Will run 1 or 1.5 miles later today. Fat as fuck 167ish.
Good luck all you guys.

Whats up ESB, been getting back into shape. Went through my full workout today, minus the full boxing regiment. This is the 5th workout of this month and a long 2 month hiatus, and I'm already making some good progress. My goal is to get back into fighting shape by mid-september.
Right now I'm 6 foot tall, and weighing in between 151 and 155 lbs.
Today's workout:
3.33 mile run on the treadmill 30 min. @ 6.7 mph = a little less than 9 minutes a mile (I no longer have access to my school's indoor track so this is the next best thing, georgia is too hot to run outside)
I am really proud of this progress the most, and it has really helped me cut down from smoking a pack a day.
Started doing 4 sets instead of 3.
4x30 55lb db shrugs
4x15 curls
4x15 hammer curls 35lb db with 4x75 incline situps as a 2 exercise circuit.
3x30 side abs
3x15 lower abs
3x30 lower back raises
3x20 shoulder exercise w 45lb
3x15 shoulder front raise
3x15 shoulder side raise
Then some shadowboxing for 2 rounds.
Good luck guys.

Did same thing yesterday but with the back rows, lat pull, and shoulder press. The 30 minute run was exceptionally easy I was so happy. Might move speed up to 7 mph next workout, but I really dislike running :D so maybe not hmmm. I'm already breaking 9 minutes per mile, and my goal is to do 8 minutes per. I'm already justifying my laziness D:
Just added some music to my playlist. My mp3 player is so cumbersome :D

So had a good week. Stepped into my boxing gym on thursday and friday and worked out doing 3 rds of shadow, 3 on heavy, 3 on speed, 3 on shadow again (3min rds w 30 sec breaks). Gonna move up to 4 rds each when I can do 3 easy, which will be in a week hopefully. I plan on stepping up to sparring this coming week, as well as moving up my pre-boxing workout to mon, tues, thurs, friday. Seeing really big improvements in my strength already and I will move my 30 min runs to 7.5 mph from 7 mph this week. Should be fun stuff.
Here's another disco treasure I dug up for your playlists.... enjoy and good luck!

Sorry for not keeping up my blog guys.
Currently this is my work out.
30 min stretch with 4 sets of 35 pushups
5 miles at 8 minute pace (on treadmill cause I don't wake up early)
4x20 DB rows 65 lb
4x20 close grip lat pull 115 lb
4x15 DB shoulder press 40 lb w situps in a 2 exercise circuit (4x100 incline or 4x40 weighted)
or
4x30 DB shrugs 65 lb
4x15 preacher curl 70 lb
4x15 DB hammer curls 45 lb w situps
then
some oblique situps and lower abs
I'll go to my boxing gym and do a few rounds 3 minutes each with 30 second break.
4x shadow boxing
-really work on popping and stepping with the jab, turning into my right hand, and pivoting back with the hook. I find when I throw my 1-2-3, I'll not throw a good right as I am thinking about the hook far too much. Same thing applies for a double jab and right. I will tend to throw a sloppy 2nd jab. Shadow boxing is a good way to make sure you are punching at the right height and with the right balance and technique
4-6 rounds on the heavybag
4 rounds on speedbag. I can almost do the full 4 at full speed non stop again.
If I have enough energy I'll take a round or two off and go back to the heavybag then speedbag. I'll finish up with the heavybag again cause I'm afraid to go more than 8 rounds on the speed bag. Will finish up with slow mo shadow boxing for a few rounds.
Which reminds me, I need to go buy a rope.
Good luck guys.

So watched the gamboa fight. Pretty good, I learned a lot watching the cyclone fighting a southpaw. Its pretty amazing watching him skip around, and just feint with his feet. Definately always has an escape plan, fking beautiful.
Found out I won't be fighting in the tournament next weekend. Trainer says I need to spar more. I still plan on just improving everything, except my running. I've gotten comfortable with running 5 miles in 40 minutes, after my 3rd go at it. I stretch 30 minutes before and after my run, and my feet are being whiny beaches. I can't stand on the ball of my left foot. I plan on getting two small trashcans today and buying ice on the regular to ice them down. Also will buy a speed rope and incorporate it into my workout when I'm ready.
Can I kick it? Yes you can.
Good luck guys.

So this week has been my start back. Last last week I took the whole week off from running. Last week I also did not run, and I slipped in 2 or 3 boxing workouts. Really needed time for my left foot to heal up....
And guess what, it worked miracles, and I mean miracles.
Monday ran 4 miles did my usual workout and weighed in at 153.5
Tuesday just boxing same 153.5
Today ran lil less than 5 miles at 8:15 pace. But felt so easy today. Love boxing man. I gotta get a video up of me hitting the bag. Weighed in at 154 after lunch. At 6'-6'1 tall and 154 lbs, I'm a big welterweight. I need to put up a damn video of me hitting the bag. You guys need to see how I make the big boy bag dance.
Good luck guys, don't stop punching.
