Any of you guys do Cardio with a gas mask? I do alot of sprinting & roadwork. Doesn't seem to really help my ring cardio though, I just get better at running. Gasmask seems like a good option.
What???
Your ring stamina will improve by sparring, nothing else. It depends for a large part on being relaxed and remembering to breath.

no running helps. Sparring helps a Shitload but running helps your wind a lot and is very necessary.

Agreed , i would say im pretty fit, usually run 4 -6 miles each day. But iv been told my biggest thing i need to work on is relaxing in the ring and breathing. I did 2 rounds in a row the other day for the first time and i was goosed! And yet i know im more than fit enough to do it if you know what i mean. Just need to relax and breathe

You're not fit enough. You're aerobically fit in an anaerobic sport. Different type of fitness.

I've seen Wandy Silva use a snorkel, that shit didn't look healthy! Still hardcore though.
Running, rowing, skipping, swimming do help in the ring, the best hting is actual sparring though. it has to be the hardest thing to replicate in training.
Even the heavy bag workouts, we were doing really good 40 minute circuits mostly on the bags. THen when sparring came around it is a differant ball park for fitness. Theres nothing like fighting.

Exactly. High altitude training would be another option. :good

While I don't care that much whether people frown at me or not, a gas mask is something I would not wear outside. Hell I make sure I'm alone before I even shadowbox.

I agree its abit far now there are easier ways to train seems a little ridiculous to me:huh

what you dont train in a gas mask? whats wrong with you?
you dont look like a normal runner without a gas mask
I do altitude training despite living below sea level. I just wear a mile long snorkel.

Coach got me to put on 20oz gloves and work hard on bags when I didn't have a partner to spar with. I think that worked too. But I did about 8 rounds (3 mins each)

Let me get this straight. To prepare you for punching three minutes in a row, he let you punch a heavy bag three minutes in a row? How can that possibly work? :blood
I miss the old days when we constantly fought over sports specific training vs. weights :|

I have already used road work, with a snorkel. But it looks like it is easier to adjust a gas mask. I have my own treadmill and aerodyne bike, where as I got the idea from Matt Hughes and Sean Sherks training camp. Although according to some people I know, alot of Military conditioning is done with gas masks.
I know sparring helps ring stanima, it's pretty obvious. But I like to do things outside of the gym to help as well. I was wondering if anyone had more prior experience with gas mask training to help me put my conditioning routine together.
As for when I trained with the snorkel it was pretty intense, but I just did 1 minute sprints/1 minute rest via treadmill for about 20 minutes. It's just hard to tape up with no one to help.
Goodlooks @ KTFO, I would do high alltitude if I had the ability to where im at.

You're right. I've noticed that the problem's there even outdoors. So it's not just an indoor prob. :good

the point of these devices is to limit the amount of oxygen going to your muscles so lactic acid sets in quicker and hopefully your body becomes more tolerant to lactic acid, using them for long distance cardio based sessions is pretty pointless as lactic acid build up is very prolonged anyway, much better usedin anaerobic training, personally i never used them and neve will, i believe my training already fringes on the non functinal side so i would never venture that far to wear a sorkel in training, damn i would be the laughing stock, as for wanderlei silva using it his cardio in his last 2 fights that went the distance v liddell and franklin was terrible and he was gassed by the 2nd round

I did interval sprints with the snorkel, isn't that anerobic? An I don't mind a few laughs if it means it will help me in a fight. Hell, Marquez drinks his own piss and eats t-rex eggs for gods sakes. Wanderli may have lost those fights but he didn't look terrible, he looks like he has alot of wear and tear. GSP also uses these methods of training, and I don't think you can say the same about his cardio.

i do my roadwork in a blindfold so my eyes get better
also why dont you just buy one of the proper things from a running shop so youre not tooling about in a gas mask or cheaper yet wear a double mouth guard which has a small air hole

sprints are a good example of an anaerobic exercise yeah but the thread opening post was for doing road work with a gas mask on which is aerobic, no point in doing this the body removes lactic acid during aerobic activity quick enough for your bodyto cope and still exercise, anaerobic exercise should be done when limiting your o2 with snorkels to improve tolerance to lactic acid, btw wanderlei is a young guy in an old mans body at the moment but his cadio was poor in those fights and he did look terrible compared to the old wandy, but i believe this is down to the drug testing policies he had before in pride and now with the NSAC etc, gsp has very good training and hence good cardio, the snorkel training will only build tolerance to lactic acid and will help in situations where lactic acid has been produced in the shoulders and form is dropping in punching but this might delay this only extremely slightly, look by alll means experiment and try new things in training but dont do this a lot its quite dangerous, building up a tolerance to lactic acid can actually lead to DEATH:scaredas:, no seriously it can, lactic acid makes us stop exercising as our muscles dont function once there is a lot of it, if we can keep going and going to the point where lactic acid doesnt do its job our hearts would not be able to cope with the increased level, there have been cases of guys who through non stop high speed running/training just under the sprinting level
built up tolerance levels which were not normal and some died of heart attacks whilst running on threadmills. Kids bodies dont produce lactic acid thats why you cant train kids like adults as they could literally keep training until the heart rate would get so high a heart attack could occur

The last time i did any running wearing a gas mask was in the army, and it wasnt much fun at all.
The eye pieces steam up after 5 mins and if your sick in the fucker you wont get rid of the smell for weeks :good
I dont see the benefits of running in one to be honest, in the army it was sometimes used as a punishment :D

I don't know about anyone else but are you just wearing the mask or is the 'CHARCOAL FILTER' attached to it as well? I'd rather not be breathing in a pollutant the whole time.
Why are people always trying to find shortcuts? Just fucking run. :huh

i look awesome running down the street with my snorkol on.
Everyone is so nice to me they honk their horn as they drive past
ps. just wear your gumsheild if you want to interupt your oxygen supply. That or just train harder.

I have to chime in on this. Running helps your ring stamina tons. A lot of folks hate it, it's time consuming, boring, and hard, but fighters have been doing it for years and the ones that quit doing it fade quickly. I know from experience. Running is the only exercise I do. I do short club fights(1 minute rounds) and my ability to not puke at the end of them has greatly improved since I began running every day.
Running is one of the single most important things you can do as a fighter, you improve your body's overall efficiency.
Your heart rate likely will not drop out of cardio range between rounds, or during periods of little action in the fight. Even if it does however with good cardiovascular conditioning every breath and every heartbeat does more for you than it normally would. This is why athletes in great condition have lower resting heart-rates. They don't need to beat harder.
Sparring works the muscles you will be using when you fight, which is a massive help, it also helps you learn to relax. If you get around the 6 round mark, it is also helpful for cardio. I also speculate that the short burst of activity help expand vessels and capillaries so you can get oxygen where you need it.
Combine with the benefits of running and it's pretty awesome.
