Can the shoulder roll be used effectively from the southpaw stance (vs a righty) or is it best to use the classic earmuffs defence?

I can't find a southpaw who uses the shoulder roll except for Zab Judah.

I could be wrong, but I always figured it wasn't a good idea because you wouldn't be able to roll when your opponent throws (in this case) his straight right. If you did roll with it, I would think a hook with the lead hand could then land no matter where it's thrown. I heard of this being a bad idea for the first time a few days ago, so take this with a grain of salt.

Southpaw shoulder roll will only be effective against another southpaw.

a south paw could probably use it against an orthodox's left hook.

im not a south paw im only assuming it would work

Assumption correct. And its also good when the lead hand bounces over that shoulder, giving way for a southpaw to throw a good right hook to the rib.

Thanks you guys.

And i guess it never was really effective for Zab, I love the counterpunching shoulder roll style guys like Mayweather and James Toney use. Whenever i try to do it in the gym the trainers tell me not to and send over somebody more skilled to try and bust me up.

I believe i'll stick to the earmuffs defence since now I know why southpaws don't use it.

I'm a southpaw. I use the shoulder roll. Are you going to any Nationals..? Let me know and I'll show you when I'm fighting...it all is timing. It definetly can work though, that post that it only works against southpaws is wrong, I've eaten guys up countering off the shoulder roll bro...

Pernell didn't fight exclusively out of shoulder roll but he used incredibly similar methods which suggest again it can work for a southpaw.
