View Full Version : Calzaghe vs Kessler on primetime in the US
Danish Dynamite

HBO had ordered the fight moved to 1AM UK time .....so it will transmitted live on primetime on US television.
Glad that our US friends will see it on primetime but a bit annoying to have to wait till 2 oclock CET to see the fight .oh well a 6 sixpack will solve that problem i bet.

pisses me off, why! No americans even involved, now I wont get out until after 2, I wont be even able to get in a club! Pricks!

Why the fuck is this going out to suit a US audience who up until about a year ago couldnt give a fuck about either fighter.

I love it. I love waiting up for a big fight. The adrenaline keeps me sober but the booze makes me opinionated, it's perfect.
And I'm not surprised. Probably it is the best fight that could be made in the sport currently.

will this even get much attention in the states? this late start is hitting tickets sales bad apparently.

Any links to prove this?
Calzaghe Is worth staying up for I guess unlike most recycled washed up or overrated Americans anyway.

If HBO are putting in the lions share of the cash, I guess they are able to dictate what time the fight will start.
Which channel are showing this in the UK?

Cheers for that. I think I'll wait until after the fight in that case before I cancel my subs. Not enough boxing on Setanta for my liking

Anyone in a reasonable range to buy a ticket and go to the event and doesn't because of the scheduling a crybaby.... I wouldn't care what time it was if the fight was taking place near me, I'd be there. This is going to be a monster event. These superfights don't happen very often, gotta take advantage when they do.
However, in terms of those just watching on television in Europe, I can see why it sucks waiting up that late to watch it.

This is bullshit, I'm getting the train over, how am I meant to go clubbing at 2am
Surely ITV will put a stop to this given that they were contracted first
And as far as I know this is not on Setanta, they only got the Hatton fight?

******s deal ran out with itv a couple of months ago and he has now gone to setanta, with the exception of khan, who ****** has signed a 7 fight deal with itv over.

I'm pretty sure HBO held a $1M option to move the fight to US prime time. The fighters will get paid a lot more for it, although I wish they had done a day fight with a rebroadcast, so I could watch the HBO fights in the day and the Showtime fights at night.
HBO website still says 5 PM Eastern US time. Calzaghe is not going to be happy about this.

Calzaghe will be plenty happy if he gets paid an extra $500k or so for the late start.

America didn't demand anything. It was Frank ****** hunched up on the corner with a hat turned up beside him begging HBO for a donation, at which point HBO delivered but also took control of the timeslot.
If the money were there without HBO, they could have staged the fight at anytime they wanted. If you were going to invest millions on the fight, wouldn't you want control to help the investment pay off?

i think calzaghe will be too classy for kessler and will stop him in the eighth or ninth round.

Wrong. they made the fight without HBO - remember when it was 1st announced, frank specifically stated one of the american network's will pick it up but it was Setanta that made the fight happen. Frank's just greedy - can't really blame him but still, considering the americans hate calzaghe it's kinda ironic.
Then it's ******'s fault, not America's.
And Americans don't hate Calzaghe, they just don't know much about him since he has never fought here and isn't on TV here. Now that he is going to be, you're mad?

Its an awful time to be fighting, and Calzaghe admitted his issues with sleeping against Lacy.
If sleep deprivation can push him to that kind of showing then Im all for it.
Calzaghe will box Kesslers ears off.

Uh no considering their skill level should be a pretty close fight with neither one of them being dominated.
Considering their skill levels, huh? :yep
Calzaghe has beaten better fighters than Kessler. Its just that they didnt have the extended O.
The only difference is that this time Calzaghe is the older fighter. He will win decisively. Just a little less decisively than he should.

Are you sure?
(From BT: I won't link it, but it's from September 5.)
“Once the deal was made with the Kessler side, it was up to me to make it work on the television end,” said Larkin. “We didn’t want to negotiate until we had a deal for the fight, but we couldn’t make a deal for the fight until we knew we had HBO, so it was a delicate balance. I negotiated with Ross and Kery, and Frank (******) negotiated with Marley and Palle.”
From ESPN:
"****** and Mogens Palle, Kessler's promoter, reached an agreement on the fight a few weeks ago, but didn't want to finalize it until it got an American broadcaster -- and the accompanying lucrative license fee -- on board."

The problem will be this (at least in the states). HBO wanted it early enough for Americans to see Calzaghe (Kessler isn't a name at all over here, at least Calzaghe is known for beating Lacy and Manfredo).
But it's a 5pm fight on a Saturday in the fall. Any American sports fan can tell you the problem with this scenario exposure wise.

I'm just glad I'm going to get to watch this fight. Whether it is on at 9pm or 3am makes no difference. This is going to be a special fight between two of the absoluted best in the biz.
Me, too. I'd make whatever schedule changes I had to in order to see this one live. This is the fight I'm most excited about this fall, and that's saying a lot.

So I guess AMERICA is #1, controlling things..
Calzaghe is about to kick Kessler's ass.
Okay, he might kick kessler's arse but he is going to loose the boxing match.

If it was on a 5PM Eastern the plan was for me to watch the Calzaghe/Kessler fight and for my brother to watch the Alabama/LSU game (on at the same time) and we would give each other updates. Now, it seems as if I will be able to watch both the game and then the fight. Sounds good to me. :happy

It's on Setanta? Fuck! I recently get my filthy hands on Sky sports and it's on fucking Setanta?!?
That means I'll have to buy Setanta for a month at £9.99!
Oh well at least Hatton Mayweather is on Sky box office.
Question: How much will it cost me on Box Office?

What? America is 5-8 hours BEHIND. 4am for you would be 9am-12pm over here.
It's now on later for you guys, not earlier.

Sometimes it must be boring to be an American, anything is served for you and you have so many stars that always wins...Where is the excitement then?
When a Dane is doing well in almost any sport it feels like christmas...And ever since childhood i was waiting up all night with my brother for "lets get ready toooo rumble" then 30sec later and a Tyson K.O you could go to bed and be completly trashed while working in the field the next day, those were the days:good

Why does Boxing have to listen to what America says? Let them watch It at a different time.
Because without America's (READ: HBO's) money, you wouldn't get to see this fight take place at all, since your boy Joe C. wouldn't fight anywhere else but his front porch AND for big bucks.
the last figures i heard were that HBO were bidding $1.5 million for the calzaghe v kessler fight
again as i understand it the pot for this fight is $10 million , so setanta and the live gate are really having to pay a quite high price for ******`s 15% HBO money.
or have HBO come up with a much larger sum to get the fight at a time to suit there american audience ?
