in the days of old when there was one belt, or WBA, WBC, IBF, or WBO ?
Elcock won some tip pot strap but Im talking one of the "proper-ish" ones
I can remember the odd challenger
Pat "what the fuck was that" Cowdell v Sanchez and Nelson
Rob McCracken v Keith Holmes
Howard Clarke v Fernando Vargas
Wayne Elcock v Abraham
my pal Richie Woodhall from Telford I reckon is the nearest geographically, although Im hoping someone knows to one that I dont, for a massive city I'm amazed weve never produced a world champ

Mike Tyson was born in Handsworth and Cassius Clay in Sparkhill.

Woodhall is the closest.
Chris Pyatt from Leicester?
Woodhall beats Pyatt by being 10 miles closer to brum.
Randy Turpin was from Leamington...right? Leamington is closer to brum than telford so woodhall is out the picture as he was a more legit champ than woodhall.

Surely that honour belongs to Randy Turpin. (And he was the REAL champion!)

:D Yup just as I mentioned in my post (a couple above yours).
True he was a REAL champ not a dodgy champ with a belt who was always injured and even got put down by crappy Beyer.

Lozells and Handsworth same-ish kinda area, Lozells is a small area of Handsworth.
Im in Kingstanding, and weve produced Anthony Hanna, who is a 100+ fight journeyman flyweight, he's fought Damaen Kelly, and Ian Napa. and our estate produced Chris Lyons a journeyman featherweight who fought Esham Pickering, and Jason Booth.
the latest from my area is a young lad by the name of Chris Truman 2-0 at the moment, looks a good prospect, fightong at lightweight, made his debut against the well travelled Karl Taylor and won on points

I don't think he was ever world champ, I'm sure he gets mentioned in "best Brit not to win a world title" type articles....

I thought Moran won a vacant title at bantam? Or super bantam if it existed then?
GazOC
09-29-2009, 11:13 AM
I'm pretty sure super bamtam wouldn't have existed back in Morans day.
GazOC
09-29-2009, 11:17 AM
According to Boxrec he won the vacant world Bamtam championship but immedialty moved up to Feather (where he drew two challenges and lost a further one at lightweight).
I wonder how widely recognized the tile was? Still he's a world champ born in Birmingham.......Live and learn eh???

09-29-2009, 11:17 AM
Maybe I'm making it up then.
Thought I remembered reading something about him winning a vacant bantam title before moving up through the weights.
To be honest, I dont know that much about him other than a couple of articles I've read. So I've probably merged about dozen random facts together in my head!

Theres a win for the vacant title against Al Delmote 1907, I've no idea of whether the title was generally recognized but its def. seems to be there in the record as a version of the world title.

he had two versus abe attell and one with jem driscoll for a version of the title.
i don't thik he lost a title fight by KO.
he got KO'd by ad wolgast but his punches were lower than duran's against buchanan and i don't think it was a title fight.

According to the latest BBB of C Yearbook; Moran won the British (NSC) version of the Bantamweight world title. There was no universally recognized champion at the weight at the time, Jimmy Walsh was claiming the American version of the World title.
Billy Plimmer though was from Birmingham and universal Bantamweight World Champion 1892 to 95.

Birmingham is like Dublin - a jinxed city for great fighters (even Ali struggled in Dublin).
Billy Plimmer, as Tyrone Booze rightly pointed out, is their only world champ, back in the 19th century (from Aston) but they've had plenty of top fighters and Moran, Bunny Johnson and Johnny Prescott are names that stick out. Des Gwilliams once beat Cornelius Boza-Edwards while another Nobby Nobbs fighter, Karl Taylor, beat Dingaan Thobela. Horace Notice is a huge case of 'what night have been'.
Johnson is the first fighter to win a British title at a higher weight and then a lower weight (heavy and light-heavy). Johnson beat Dennis Andries twice.

We used to use Bunny Johnsons pub for a while, nice fella, and always made us welcome when we arrived already pissed
as for Nobby Nobbs I grew up 2 minutes from him and I think he has a boxing gym in his flat judging by the amount of lads he has go through there .. dont know what the CRACK is to be honest though

yes about 8 years back possibly, maybe more, down the back streets of Digbeth, we used to use Hennesseys, then land down the SD in a bit of a state.

if you ever saw 3 overweight, overdressed (for Digbeth) Villa fans in there that was us, you might remember my one pal, he was always bragging about how much wedge he had, and how many Rolex's he owned

where would you define as Lozells by borders ? Id say the A34 from the Mosque up to where Lozells Rd joins 6 ways Aston is Lozells, but by the time you get to Azims Id class that as Handsworth, everything running parrallel Id say could be classed as either.

Dunno really I'm not a map maker. Was just pointing out that Lozells isn't 'part of Handsworth', it simply isn't any more than Perry Barr is. My mom always told me to steer clear of u lot. Bloody roughians:blurpSenisble lass your mum.
