View Full Version : Murray-Thaxton RBR thread (legal stream inside)
Coverage starts on ITV4 at 8.00pm.
If you can't watch it on tv for whatever reason here's the live stream: [Only registered and activated users can see links]
Predictions?
I think Murray in around 8, most likely a corner or ref stoppage. However, Thaxton has one punch KO power at this level - something Murray's previous opponents (McAllister, Lawton and Meager) didn't. That could make it interesting.
They're calling this fight 'Overdue'. Well who's fault is that Mick? You could have made this fight ages ago.
Undercard looks pretty naff though we might get to see Richard Towers. A 6ft8 HW trained by the Ingles.

I quite like the unpredictablity of Gabriel Clarke roaming around back stage and turning up (what often seems to be) unannounced in the dressing rooms - maybe its the novelty factor but I think its one of the highlights of ITV4's coverage. What can I say? I'm a man of simple tastes....
Late stoppage for Murray I think.
Thaxton is tough, but he tires. Especially under this onslaught.
I'll be interested to see how Murray's defence holds up. Thaxton's timing has been abismal recently, Murray has to be able to show he can cut the ring off without taking punches in a fight like this, if he wants to progress further.
For Thaxton I think its pretty much try to land a big uppercut/left hook. I don't see his straight punches putting a dent in Murray. He needs to knock him out.
:rofl Clarke is brilliant

But guys say this every time there is a premature stoppage. Of course not, nobody wants that, but frankly, he looked like he was going to get hurt a minute into the second round. Why not stop it then?
Thaxton got hit by a decent punch and he retreated to the ropes. He wasn't getting beaten there at the point the referee stepped in, nor was he given any kind of time to recover. He wanted to fight on and his diligance in his trianing camp plus his heart means he should be allowed to do so.
Also, the stoppage did not comply with the rules of boxing. "Unable to continue" my backside. British title fights used to carry the same weight in the ring as world title fights do now. There's no reason they couldn't again, but bullshit like this doesn't help.

Unknown. He looks organised and patient on top of his obvious gifts. He'll stand or fall based on what's underneath the concrete. Guy needs to come with Joe Frazier if he's going to make it at the highest level.
Watching him tonight, i thought of Kats, dunno why..........then i thought of Kats Vs. Murray :D

Too early. Only saved Thaxton from the inevitable but that's not the point
Murray was impressive, he has looked better lately after hitting a bit of a flat spot
He was throwing nice combinations there and he lets his punches go really well, he spots the opening and throws, very instinctive..

In a British title fight one guy gets wobbled and they stop it? Amir Khan was allowed to take punches until he almost had to be peeled off the canvas and that was a non-title fight. I wish referees and judges (O'Connor in particular) wouldn't go into fights already having made up their minds about what's going to happen.

Yep, he was minimal but very precise when letting go.
Fought well, it was premature especially given Thaxtons experience AND he does have above average power, so he always got the punchers chance.
Bottom line, he wasnt taking a beating at the the point of stoppage.

hate the way they try to justify shit stoppages like that by saying he was saving the guy from a bad beating. thats boxing for fucks sake. not like he was getting pummelled on the ground, the guy got wobbled. if a fighter gets knocked out badly that's the risk they take.

Exactly.
If Thaxton had have fell back on the ropes and Murray opened up on him, then the ref could call it off stating that Thaxton was not fighting back, BUT only if it was a sustained burst AND some of the punches landed AND Thaxton was visibly in distress.
Murray looked like he was gonna get the stoppage anyway, but the ref should have let it play out a bit more and seen what developed.

Or a LOT longer. We're talking like we know what was going to happen next but listening to Thax., if you believe him, they were looking at a late surge. British title fight. I'm not convinced. I think Katsidis is more of a hooker than a straight puncher. Murray's biggest weakness is straight down the middle, his gloves are near his ears rather than his chin and he relies on reacting. I think Murray could see off a lot of Katsidis' attacks.

Well he's not going to say he was spent after 4 rounds is he?
The stoppage was a little premature but nothing too bad, McCracken summed it up the best. Thaxton had been getting tagged for 3 rounds and the stoppage seemed enevitable, a LITTLE longer (and a little longer was all it was going to take IMHO) would have been nice for a title fight and a warrior like Thaxton but thats about all.

Fucking work :-( I had to set off to work at 21:15 and just arrived into work 5 minutes ago. Now I didn't watch a single punch thrown throughout the fight. I just arrived into work to see the cornermen consoling Thaxton. It showed the reply straight away and I was thinking WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT STOPPED FOR ??? I've seen it back and I still think the same thing. This wasn't a fight in which Thaxton was being constantly hurt from the highlights I saw. The punch that stumbled him back wasn't exactly a spiteful punch, it seemed a problem with his footing more than anything else, the other four shots, none of which touched him, didn't merit a stoppage.
Felt sorry for him at the end when he was in his corner. As soon as I saw that look I knew straight away he'll retire. He was crying too.
Rob McCracken made me laugh saying that Froch would start to take over later on  Means he expects him to be getting outboxed
Fury family getting another 'jobbing' :-( How did that ref not give that other lad 1 single round :-( Even my boss at work knew he'd been beat - Like he said though Fury's Dad probably opened his jacket to show the ref his shotgun before the fight

Murray has really come on since winning the Brit title (the first time). Meager, McAllister, Lawton and now Thaxton, all solid performances showing improvements each time.

Think you summed it up perfectly mate.
Yes Thaxton was caught and under the cosh at that point of the fight but he wasn't given any chance to recover by the ref. If Murray had landed with 1 or 2 clean punches while Thaxton was shaken, fair enough, but the ref never gave him the oppertunity to finish it off.... or give Thaxton the oppertunity to hold or pull away. Especially in a title fight these guys deserve the benefit of the doubt... they are trained professionals ffs! If I was Murray I'd be upset for not getting the chance to finish things properly and prove there was no ambiguity about the decision.
Thaxton, genuine legend and credit to the sport. All the best to him
As for Murray... his hand speed and reactions are brilliant but he wont get far if he doesn't start using some sort of jab. He just waited for Thaxton to come on to him, which worked well against a come forward fighter but when he gets a decent boxer he's in trouble. Khan would have him on what I saw tonight!
I'm looking forward to seeing him in some good tare up's at European level though :D

Main event aside it was a poor card- kris Hughes did fantastic but it made me laugh when I was on the way in and the hennesey guy stopped me and started asking me loads of questions about my license credentials- I felt like saying 'come on pal- have u seen the bill?' if I was going totry and sneak into a show it wouldn't have been last nights one ;-)
Murray was sensational and quickly found that jonos reflexes were no more- he nailed him from the start with right crosses. Those who complained about the stoppage - it was always going to be fruitless for thaxton, he was just taking a hiding and hadn't landed a punch of note.
Hennessey promotions needs to rethink a few years back they had all the top am talents turn over with them, but with Murray, froch and fury only he's going to bestruggling very soon if one of them jumps ship and ihave a strong suspicion a hatton move is only a matter of time for murray!
