Hi folks,
I've recieved a ton of messages regarding the Sugar Ray Leonard dinner up at the Celtic ground this coming saturday night- its sure to be a great evening with some great current and former scottish boxers present as well as the legend himself.
The show looks likely to be a great success and obviously we realise there is a large Sugar Ray fanbase here on ESB. Kev has come up with an ESB exclusive for this weekend.
In appreciation of the good folk of ESB we will be having an ESB table strictly for long serving ESB members. Tickets will be half price at £50 and will include the meal etc.... Its your oppertunity to meet the great man himself plus catch up with real life ESB people.
In addition to this we are offering two free tickets to the person who comes up with the 'best' question for Sugar Ray. They will get the oppertunity to ask him themselves during a question and answer session and we'll put the answers to runners up questions on here.
Anybody interested please notify me as soon as possible so we can make arrangements ASAP.
*** Note this offer is only available to long serving members.

Its too far for me to travel but my question would be:
What was your most satisfying victory?
a)Hearns I
b)Duran II; or
c)Hagler
Or a more controversial:
Why, after Angelo Dundee trained, developed and honed your boxing skills, did you not stand up for him when your business backers ,in your presence, forced him to sign a new contract reducing his commission?

anyway might aswell get my question in.
right you need to delver this exactly like i type it
'Right Ray cut the bull shit when you fought Duran the first time what was the tactics? You were the naturally bigger, stronger faster guy. You wanted to back him up didnt you? that was your plan, it makes sense. Dont give me the bull shit about you fighting the wrong fight.'
if he says he got drawn into a fight say
'But ray come on what you hiding nothing to be ashamed of, id probably say it would be better if it was your tacitcs'

Is this a shirt and tie job ?
Tommy Hearns T-shirt to stay in the cupboard ?
I admit, am more a Hearns fan ( ok, SRL Mancard revoked )
Thinking of a question, that aint asked 1000 times.
Interesting question Jetset, i see the djs record screech to a halt

Q: Was the rumours about Sugar Gay leonard true?
better not ask that
I would like to know what he thinks of the current fighters who operate at the weights he fought at himself. I would ask him "Who in your prime would you most like to test yourself against today?" and also "Who would you least like to face?"

:good
Aye, who would give you nightmares stylewise ?
Mr Leonard, what would you do differently now in regards to fight preperation and training that you think has a considerable difference in todays competition ?
If you were to begin your career now, do you feel todays climate is harder or easier on a fighter, regarding fighters rights, the variety of promoters, the newer weights etc etc
I remember reading that when winding up your camp before a big fight you would then run on your own rather than with others and go through the whole fight with your opponent in your head, many times.
How much would you say you changed gameplan to suit there style in fight, compared to the mental prep beforehand ? Even in preperation were you always ad******g and seeing possible problems arising....or was the thought process purely based upon what YOU were going to do ?
Would you consider your gold medal far more satisfying than any of your Pro wins, considering who your opponent was in the final and how you dismantled him ?
What do you think of ESB Boxing Mr Leonard ? Do you think in a catchweight fight that your speed and skills even in your prime would be enough to stay out of Charlie Zelenoffs Hearns-like range ?
Just ideas......

Ray leonard
whos the best boxer?
do you think Hagler could have got the decision against you?
Obviously you had some hard times after the retirement after Finch, was these problems because of not boxing, having time and money on your hands and perhaps missing the way of life and all that?
any advice for young boxers?
you ditn come from a poor background, do you think thsi hindered you in anyway as some people would say you didnt have the same hunger as others?

nah what happened was his family was comfortable not poor not like rich but comofrtable
after he won gold his Dad had to stop working and needed an expensive operation and Ray boxed to get the cash
also if it wasdnt for leonard we wouldnt have £1 mill signing on fees

Saw stuff bout his dad been ill ayes.
He was the biggest pro debut when he turned over, cashwise i mean, at the time.
Kind of why i was thinking about all the big deals boxers were getting offered, how he sees it now and then etc.

Shame I can't make it.
I'd like to hear him talk about the rationale behind his many retirements and comebacks. Whether he knew he didn't have it any more v Camacho and with the benefit of hindsight when would have been his perfect time to hang up the gloves.
If he could have given the young version of himself a piece of advice what would it be.
And what was the deal with the hookers?

From what Kev Maree says to me today, if i picked him up right, you would probably be able to take a friend or parent at the same cost, pretty sure he says that, as you is off the esb.
It aint strictly shirt n tie ( school ties are a no no ) as he says, just well dressed, presented.
Looking at sub 300 going i think also, so theres plenty time for pics and questions with everyone.......
If i got anything wrong, excuse me, i aint too good with "foreign" accents when am on the phone in a piss windy field :D

Not sure if I'm eligible or could even make it, but does he feel that he was indeed a light heavyweight champ, having beat the man, but not at the weight? Also, does he regret making both of the comebacks in the 90s, or was he glad to have tested himself again and again to know he was finished for sure?

A meal & meeting a legend like Ray Leonard for 50 quid? Thats an amazing offer.
I know I am the ESb evil scotsman & we all fuck each other around, but a table with a bunch of ESB'ers & Ray Leonard, its the stuff of dreams.
No joking or fannying around from me here, Im being deadly serious when I say that this thread makes me swell with pride. The proper boxing fans on here take care of each other.
Big respect to everyone who arranged this, 50 quid for a meal & a meet with Sugar Ray Leonard... excellent stuff.

Great deal Jeff, too far for me though I'm afraid.
But, just to play the game...
With there being a long debate over the legitimacy of your decision over Hagler, if you were to approach the fight again, would you do anything differently in attempt to make the victory more comprehensive?
and
What was your secret in the complete change of styles between your first and second fights with Duran? Were you naive in the first fight and got sucked into the way Duran wanted you to fight, or was it a conscious decision to approach the first one differently to most of your previous fights?

Ha Ha - i know everyone would like to go but with him being a young lad an all he's probably gonna have the hardest time getting the money/permission to get along to it.
And its not like he wouldn't appreciate it, he knows a hell of a lot about the game and would probably go 10 times out of 10 if money/parents weren't an issue.
I dont know anyone of his age who dedicates as much time to the sport (whether fighting or studying it) and he ignored the fact it was his birthday last week and never celebrated at all because he had a fight the night after, and then he was 'jobbed' by all accounts too

Not sure of the start time but yes, it's Celtic Park.
Don't go to Rutherglen, it's still a 2 mile walk. Dalmarnock is the closest but that's still a 5-10 minute walk.
The following should help.......
Celtic Park lies in the Parkhead district of Glasgow, about a mile and a half east of the City Centre.
From the Motorway
Visitors coming from the north or south by motorway can follow the M74 or M73 and the M74 (East) to the end of the road at Tollcross, and proceed for another mile or so along London Road to the ground.
Motorway Exit from East/West
Visitors from the East or West can exit at M8 junctions 12, 13, and 14.
From Glasgow City Centre
From Glasgow City Central, the 61, 62 and 43 'First Bus' buses all go past the ground.
Trains from Queen Street Station
Trains from Queen Street to either Belgrove or Carntyne take you to within 20 minutes walk of the ground.
Trains from Glasgow City Centre
Trains from Glasgow Central or Argyle Street to Dalmarnock take you to within 5 minutes walk of the ground.

GPater, if Dan tells you the tickets are in the back of his car, just say no.
Another question for Ray
" Most kids around your time wanted to grow up and be the heavyweight champ just like Joe Frazier and your idol Muhammad Ali. My question to you is although you had one of the greatest boxing careers of all time, did you ever have any regrets that you didn't have the frame to go up and challenge for the heavyweight title? "

The guy is an absolute legend. When I got the job of hosting the night and interviewing him in front of a live audience, I have to admit that I was nervous as hell :scaredas: I'm a boxing MC and this was bigger than anything that I had done.
To sit in his company all night, talking about everything, from amateur boxing to Barack Obama, was brilliant, and that was before the live interview!
He was brilliant, spoke to the audience for a good time and even took questions from the floor.
He's in the UK for a few more dates, I think he's in Wales tomorrow & Monday and Liverpool on Tuesday. If you can, go and see him, you will not be disappointed.

Well....where do i begin
As mentioned it was taken on short notice so off i trumbled to Parkhead minus ma mates or brothers then kept reminding maself why i was going :)
Met Kev and Jeff when i fired in and i must say, it was impressive from the outset, the whole setup. Grabbed a beer and had a mosey around, glad i wore ma suit etc then found maself speaking to a guy that had seen it in the paper that afternoon and rocked up ASAP.
From what i can remember he said he was an ex scottish champ back in the day and fought the english champ at the time that had beat Hearns as an amatuer. Forgot his name but Billy N came over to say hello so he could shed some light on it ( pony tail, Steven Seagal type bloke )
Next, was photo time with the man himself, not before grabbing a pic and a chat with Kenny Ando talking injuries and stuff, top bloke and fine missus :D Naturally i told SRL what a delight it was for him to be meeting the Hairy as we had a wee cuddle and pose. All thoughts of asking him for a staredown pic/pose went out the window i admit
Anyways, at the Kevin Maree table, i had the good fortune to be sitting next to Dave "The Gypsy" Douglas and one of his fighters, Paddy Pollock and a few others, a boy that trains under Peter Harrison and ..... an up and coming MC....Greg Houston.
All i can say is, what storys and banter that was flying around and i felt absolutely overwhelmed to be sitting with them, never mind waiting on SRL........the texts and calls were flying in so my apologys for the multi msg randomley bad spelt replys :D
Having ma dinner i couldnt help but smile seeing Jeff etc racing around regarding the promotion and auction items " fark i got it easys here" i thought......and then THE MAN himself spoke. Btw, that auctioneer MC guy sounded hella Buncey if you werent to look at him, bit freaky.
The way SRL spoke and delivered his answers regarding the questions was basically............SMOOTH !!! Sure he has done this a few times am sure but it just seemed so surreal i guess.Hard to explain in words maybe.Talking about Tommy and the phone calls was funny as fark, cheeky but obviously so respectful.
After THE MAN had finished with the Q and A i talked a wee bit with Ricky Burns regarding Mitchell, cpl pics with with him and Anderson. Spoke with John Simpson etc
Absolute gentlemen.
Met Gary Jacobs, grabbed a pic, he was off to the pisser i think so didnt go busting out the Sweet Pea banter. Few pics and hellos with others, was well sound.
So basically it was an absolute brainfry for me and finding the Celtic groundsmen taking the Euro cup replica out of the stadium for cleaning or whatever, i traded ringtones for a cpl pics ( strange i know ) They drew the line at me getting pics, standing and pulling a whizz in it, pretending of course.
Greg Houston the MC guy and Peter Harrisons fighter then kindly took me into the city to ma brothers club where i naturally repaid in vodka and cranberryjuice ( Harrisons boy, forgot his name ) and asked any girl/guy " are you ESB ?" before having any regard at all for them for the next 5 hours !!!
It served me well.
Weegi birds love the ESB ;)
Forgot a lot but hey ...... is all good.
Jeff T , Kevin Maree, as said earlier.....thankyou :thumbsup
Everyone i met, be it fighters, ex fighters, bar girls , doormen etc...were absolutely top class :good

Nah man i payed for ma ticket, yours maybe won, not sure, now you mention it......i dunno where mine is and i left ma laminated SRL menus in ma bro's dj box, FUCKSAKE.
Aye, on a serious note, Jeff Thomas does some damn fine writeups, he dosent do many though.
If you have seen them, you will know what i mean.
Dunky asked him for HIS interpretation regarding a Gomez bill once......and by fuck he got it, boy has some good story skills.
Was an OWNAGE tbh, serious.
'
My "writeup" was more a, i will quickly attempt a "went , did, saw "......not a serious piece, BANZAI'D ....as is evident
