View Full Version : Povetkin fighting in US
From Fightnews
The Friday, October 16 Baltimore Pro Boxing card at Du Burns Arena in Baltimore receives a nice boost because IBF #1 ranked heavyweight Alexander Povetkin has been added to the card. The undefeated Russian (17-0, 12 KO’s) will battle “Dangerous” Damon Reed of Topeka, KS (44-13, 31 KO’s) in a scheduled 10-round contest. Povetkin, who won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, is trained by Teddy Atlas, who will be ringside for Povetkin’s first pro bout in the United States.
Poor opponent but at least he's back in action.

As long as he's back in action it don't matter that much.
I had a feeling Atlas would bring him in the US.

Povetkin has been terribly managed since the Chambers win. He should have gone the WBA route. Skyes, Estrada...He's also getting plumper.
Still think Povetkin would dominate Valuev, Haye, Ruiz. That's the only way he should go. Chagaev would be a very close fight though.
Wlad or Vitali curb stomp Povetkin.
How can you sit on a mandatory position for 2 years? The IBF should mandate Wlad-Povetkin now. Im a lot more interested to see this than Wlad-Chambers. Wlad is gonna swat Chambers away like a fly.

Since joining up with Teddy, or since Chambers? If the former, link/pics please.

It's just an observation. He's not fat but he was near 230 last time, a career high. His body has looked less and less tight since the Byrd fight. This makes sense since his activity level has dropped off considerably. I don't think it's a coincidence that he looked so lethargic against Estrada the first 8 rounds or so.

To be honest I thought he had retired.

Povetkin doesn't speak english, but I do think he is the type to listen.
We'll see if Atlas can transform Povetkin's style.

He should fight some tall, athletic fighters to prepare for the Klitschkos. Seeing how well he does with them would be an indication of whether he should go for a title shot.

People have been sayig this for years now, and yet it never seems to happen. Obviously, Povetkin believes in himself, or else he would not have started training with Atlas to improve his style. But it just seems that he is hiding something...
Well, I am a fan, so I hope I am worng.

Why?
Because he made great noise and his career went at great pace. He got himself into position to fight Klit and then boom nothing.

Atlas will not help Povetkin, he will make him worse. Povetkin is a good fighter, but not ready for Vitali or Vlad.
Will that fight be on any US TV? I would like to watch it even though this opponent is very bad. I do not think this fight will develop Povetkin somehow. I guess Atlas wants to see him in action to get a better perspective of his abilities.

This is terrible, he is fighting a non-descript opponent on a second rate card, probably making a fraction of what he would in Germany. I was a huge supporter of Povetkin but it is clear that his career is stalling out badly.
Rumour has it Povetkin has pulled out and will fight for the interim IBF title. Possibly against Eddie Chambers.

This is a very intriguing rematch at this point. :think
It is indeed.
It's official. Chambers-Pov if not then Pov-Peter
Russian star Alexander Povetkin (17-0, 12 KOs) will fight for the IBF Interim Heavyweight Championship, the IBF has confirmed. “That is great news for Alexander,” Sauerland Event General Manager Chris Meyer said. “He has been waiting for his title shot for such a long time. We are very happy that the IBF grants Alexander this chance.” The 30-year-old Olympic gold medal winner has been waiting for his IBF title shot ever since beating Eddie Chambers, who is now the WBO mandatory challenger, in an elimination tournament in January 2008. A first showdown with Klitschko failed to materialise in December 2008 when Povetkin injured his ankle in practice. The IBF ordered Klitschko to defend his title against Povetkin before September 13, 2009. However, the Ukrainian champion opted to fight Ruslan Chagaev in June 2009 instead. He needed to undergo shoulder surgery afterwards and has been declared unfit to fight until the end of 2009. Since Klitschko´s latest injury significantly extends Povetkin´s waiting time yet again, the IBF ordered an interim title fight. “Finally, the waiting is over for Povetkin,” Meyer added. “He gets what he deserves – a world title fight in the near future. We are all tired of waiting for Klitschko.”
If Eddie Chambers does not want to fight Povetkin for the IBF Interim Title, Samuel Peter would be the next in line. “We are waiting to see who the opponent will be,” Meyer added. “We will then work out the date and the venue as soon as possible.” The title shot means that Povetkin will not take a tune-up fight in Baltimore on October 16.

Great! Just what the heavyweight division needs, another belt holder. Sasha should win either bout but I have no doubt that most of America-centric denizens of the boxing forum will predict a Chambers victory, despite Sasha's dominant victory in their first bout.

Well i think Povetkin is certianly due for a shot but i disagree that the division needs another belt. Injuries are legitimate and both he and Klitschko have legit reasons for this not going down.
He already beat Chambers, he should not have to re-fight him in order to get to Vova. Sasha and Vova should just fight, forget the intrem b.s.

Yes, I agree. Just being sarcastic about the division needing another belt holder.:good
Povetkin fighting Peter next sounds great. Much better than the fight that was supposed to take place today.

Chambers can make much more money with a fight against Wlad, so i doubt he will rematch Povetkin at this point. Peter-Povetkin is probably the fight we get for the interim title. Two aggresive fighters going to battle, sounds very interesting.
