Hong Man Choi Accepts Shaquille O'Neal's Mixed Martial Arts Challenge
NBA star Shaquille O'Neal ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) has said on numerous occasions that he would like to fight 7-foot-2 Korean fighter Hong Man Choi ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) in an MMA match when his basketball career ends. The four-time champion even appears to be somewhat serious about this challenge, as videos of him training MMA have popped up on the Internet as of late.

When FanHouse contacted Choi, who is scheduled to face Ikuhisa Minowa in the DREAM Super Hulk Tournament semifinals on Tuesday in Japan, about fighting O'Neal at some point in the future, he simply responded via e-mail, "Yes, if there is a chance."
Something tells me there's a chance.
It's safe to say that the good folks at Fighting and Entertainment Group, DREAM's parent company, would love nothing more than to book this fight. Just look at what they've done with Choi recently: in May 2007, they matched him up with former baseball player Jose Canseco and "Techno Goliath" will outweigh Minowa by 126 pounds when they meet in Tuesday's semifinal bout. In some ways, a fight against O'Neal would be the most logical MMA fight Choi has ever been a part of.
Asked whether he believed O'Neal had a chance against him, Choi, who was a man of few words in our interview, responded, "No."
Choi is 2-2 in his MMA career. Other than his one-sided victory over Canseco, his only other MMA win was a 16-second first round knockout of Bobby Ologun, a Japanese TV personality, in December 2006. His two losses have come against Fedor Emelianenko and Mirko Cro Cop.
In June 2008, he had a brain tumor removed, which many believed would end his fighting career. However, Choi said his health continues to improve.
"My condition is about 80% right now, but it is getting better," Choi said. "Although my condition is not perfect, I will do my best for each fights."
The 28-year-old added that he plans on splitting the rest of his career between K-1 and MMA, but it's unlikely that anyone will ever take him as a serious MMA fighter. That's why he needs fights against the likes of "The Big Aristotle" to keep his career going. And now that we know both men are into the idea (what a surprise, I know), it could be only a matter of time before the freakiest of freak shows bouts takes place at the Saitama Super Arena.
In case you missed it, below is a video of O'Neal challenging Choi to an MMA fight:

Nice. What's your take on this Scurla? I love these sort of match-ups, very intriguing, props to both men. Some years back around early 2000's i remember Shaq getting the crap beaten out of him by Charles Barclay in an NBA game. Shaq seems to have a keen interest in MMA and boxing but he's not good at neither. Its getting pretty tiresome seeing tons of guys trying to turn their hands at MMA.

That's pretty much how I feel. Not only that, but freak show fights do not interest me in the slightest. One of the bad things that Japanese MMA gives us, but they love that shit apparently. There's just no skill at all. Bob Sapp, Hong Man Choi etc, they can all fuck off.

I'm too lazy to go to hulu right now to find the link, but you should check out the Shaq Vs episode when he fights Oscar de la Hoya. There's footage of Shaq sparring, and he impressed me when he was in he ring with Oliver McCall. Oneal is a world class athlete, and you don't get to his level without a competitive spirit.
I would pick Choi if this were happening soon, but Oneal says when he is finished with basketball. Depending on when that is, Oneal may have time to learn a great deal. That is if he even serious about this at all.

MMA is quickly getting an image of anyone can do it. I supposed people see TUF fighters and WWE fighters go on to be king and they think it can't be all that hard. To most it might look like an organised street fight. Maybe they see a cage, blood adverts, tats, skinheads, rock music and think it's a good old bar room brawl.
Shaq got outboxed by a shot welterweight/light middleweight. I'm not sure about his ability. He is undoubtedly rangey, big and strong but how effective he is, is debatable.

You wont see this type of behavior in ANY other fighting discipline. Alas this is the image that Western MMA projects. The only difference is the Japense love a freak show so these type of fights will always have an audience.

Shit yeah il watch it. A scrap is a scrap. But it doesnt lend much legtimacy to MMA when any pug thinks he can do it.

I'd watch it. I would like to see Shaq embarressed, mainly to go some way towards silencing the kind of people that think that any athletic basketball/football player would KO Wlad.

that's my point. this sort of shit intrigues me but it can hurt the sport and make it a circus act. this isn't a tough man competition. this isn't a film like AWOL or bloodsport.
these are genuine athletes with unrivalled skilled that isn't picked up overnight.
i think when guys like Brock, Lashley, Kimbo etc are brought into the sport their background needs to be explained even more. Brocks wrestling background is talked about but maybe it needs to be talked about until they are blue in the face. Even Kimbo, he knows a bit of boxing, he must've picked it up from somewhere. people hate on him because he is a street fighter but he when it came to boxing in back gardens he knew what he was doing.

If your referring to when Barkley was on the rockets and he threw the ball at Shaq then Shaq went after him a bit he hardly got his ass kicked. It wasn't much of a fight just a lil scuffle.

choi would destroy shaq.
maybe....He's not as aggressive as he used to be...so anything can happen.
kinda like sapp... Sapp never had any skills but there used to be a time when he would still take advantage of his size and try to hurt his opponents. (see his fight vs Hoost or Nogueira , abidi )...not anymore.

Shaq didn't get GnP'ed at all man all that happened was barkely had him in a lil head lock. If anybody GNP anybody in the NBA they would be suspended for the season at a minimal. Kermit Washington was basically done after the one punch ko he had on Rudy T.

Shit like this ruins the reputation of MMA as a serious sport. It's the only combat sport where someone like Shaq could even consider having a few months training and then have a professional fight with someone with a half decent name.

This thread title should be edited; makes it seem like this might be happening soon. Shaq has at least one full NBA season left before he retires, so if this fight is to take place "after basketball" it's going to be a while. :nono

Jeffrey Ross once said that Shaq was so big and clumsy, that watching him play basketball, is like watching a retard fuck.
