He was supposed to fight last Friday but the fight fell through and here's an article with some quotes from Ajose and a feeler for why the fight didn't happen this Friday gone.
With Olusegun Ajose’s World Boxing Championship eliminator match against Ionut Dan Ion of Romania previously scheduled for last weekend now called off, there are concerns that the chances of him getting to fight in the world category have once again diminished.
But the coach of the Light Welter Weight Commonwealth Champion, Joe Mensah, said such insinuations are wrong as the fight will likely happen by the end of November.
Speaking to NEXT over the weekend, Mensah said that the World Boxing Council will be having its convention in the first week of November where he said a new date will be fixed for the eliminator.
“The fight is still on, and by the time the WBC convention ends, they would have decided who the new promoter for the fight is and the date, but I assure you that we are looking at a November ending date latest,” Mr. Mensah said. Real deal?
The Ajose/Ion bout was one eagerly awaited by boxing fans, many of whom wanted to see if Ajose’s biggest fight will prove he has just been having it easy with under-matched boxers or if he is indeed the real deal, particularly since he is seen as a bright spot in an otherwise average division.
Ajose, however, said that he is not relenting in his quest to be a world champion by 2010. Although upset, he said postponing the eliminator billed for Bucharest was just a little set back.
“I am still training, no time to relax. I don’t want to be caught unawares when the new date is announced, which could be in a couple of weeks, I need to be ready,” Ajose said.
Feelers coming from Ion’s camp, however, suggest the bout was postponed at the instance of the TV station billed to air the fight. Low publicity surrounds the bout in Romania, unlike other bouts of Dan Ion in Bucharest, so the TV station asked for more time.
The WBC convention will hold in Jeju, Korea, from November 1 to 7.
