View Full Version : ESB Official Nominations Update

The original thread has become a monster, so let's start fresh.
First, thanks to everyone who has participated, whether offering advice for how to maintain the rankings or simply by voting. I think the results speak well of the board's collective acumen with respect to the best posters.
Moving forward, there's a lot to do between now and October 6 -- and everyone will want to start compiling their rankings, of course -- so let's end the nominations process on Monday at 8:00am EST. That gives everyone a full weekend.
A few points:
1) Everyone can nominate two more posters, even if you voted previously on the original thread. And you may nominate any poster you choose, regardless of whether that person was nominated in the original thread. Please do not nominate the same folks you did in the original thread, however, and do not vote for those already locked in to the committee.
If you didn't vote in the original thread, you still may nominate only two posters. That thread is frozen, and those who voted first and most enthusiastically should have more opportunity to nominate other posters.
2) Posters who received at least four nominations in the initial thread already have received automatic entrance to the committee.
3) Everyone else carries their balance forward. However, getting to four votes now does not ensure that one gets in, although obviously the odds improve. We just don't need to have everyone voting for the same posters.
Invitations to join the Committee will be extended to the following:
Brooklyn1550
Amsterdam
Zakman
kg0208
Guru Too You
Erratic Behavior
MSTR
Achillesthegreat
Sweet Pea
That's a total of nine posters, and we need to fill nine more spots from this board.
The remaining totals look like this:
Odo: II votes
Sues2nd: III
Marnoff
Mightyd40
Domngo
Johnco
Whatarock: III
Pimp C: II
KayGB
Axe: III
Tobkhan: II
Jack Presscott: II
El Rey
Kirk
Bart
Trouble Lurks
Rumsfeld
Sean: II
Polish Pummler: III
Pecks
Sandman
Dane Pugilist: III
Asterion
China_Hand_Joe: III
Lance Uppercut
Additionally, some posters have received votes either on both the General board and the Classic board, or on just the Classic board. Here are those already voted in for Classic's six spots:
Crosstrainer
Robbi
McGrain
Janitor
And the Classic totals (ignoring some votes in which posters voted on both threads):
Sweet Scientist: II
Manassa: II
Dudeoneum: II
Luigi
Decebel
Chris_Pontius
CM Clay
Street Lethal
McVey
Old Fogey
That leaves a pair of openings still on the table.
Once the nominations process is complete, I'll extend invitations to all of the nominated posters, and if someone declines a bid, we'll then go with the next-highest vote getters. We'll think of a tiebreaker if it becomes necessary.
Now, get to voting!

You can vote again. I edited the original post to make that more clear.
I know some people were disappointed by having only two choices, so this way they get a total of four.

Ive already recieved 4 votes on the classic, yet I'm not in. Not that Im bothered. I aint got a clue who to vote for. Don't want to hurt feelings by not voting for the people who voted for me.
If its to do with rankings, would need to be someone who's into the present day.

Well I dont think it should be about feelings so to say. I voted last time for kg and Amsterdam (and because they represent two different opinions on various subjects...and like them or not, they for the most part intellegently express their opinions...well except for Ams hatred to anything Taylor), not as a popularity contest, but that I have the most interaction with them for the most part (and for a long time as well). And I have enormous respect for the both of them.
I had a huge list of people I wish I could vote for, but with the setup and rules, it makes that hard. I voted for you and Sweet Pea this time around, for some of the same reasons I had for the previous two.
I didnt make the top two on alot of people I would have voted for (and a the original two I did) and I dont look at it as a slight, I mean, there are plenty of good, sound posters on here that deserve mention. If they get in and I dont, so be it. I joke around about all the votes (BYYYYAAAAHHHHH) and such, but thats just me. I would never take it personal, unless someone voted bigtime9 and said he edged me....then I might go on a three state killing spree....
But like I said, I know there are quite a few people who I would have LOVED to vote for, and even then, I am sure I would have forgotten a few....but it shouldnt be a personal thing....nor should feelings come into play.

Rankings go to vote on the first Sunday of every month. At that time, new nominees (you self-nominate after this initial period) can apply to join the ranks of voters. They then have to approve you at a 66.7% rate.
You can apply only once every six months.
If you want to learn more about the project, check out the sticky thread at the top of the board and click on page 4. Just scroll down and you'll see the latest version of the constitution.

I dont know if I have to officially accept, but if I have to, Im accepting.

Thanks, Guru.
I've been posting more in the Classics section, though, so that might DQ from consideration in General. And, with school starting, that's eaten into a lot of posting time.
But, I'd certainly be willing to contribute to the ratings process...:D

BTW, I deliberately made sure to include at least one international nominee becuase I believe our rankings should accurately reflect THE BOARD and not be one sided in any way:good

Seconded. Same with a few others.
Still, with a committee of 24, a nuthugger or two should get evened out by the others, and if a person feels he doesn't know the entire sport well enough, then he can decline.

Balance my friend, his extremity balances other forms.
His input at heavy and from 154 down will be worth a look, for sure.
His input at all other weights will be horribly distorted by his Calzaghe bias. It informs his opinions about the past and American fighters, God only knows what hideous affect it will have on his actual 160-175 rankings.

I can't make any promises, his behaviour goes from 'normal' at times, to all out eccentricity, but I assure you that he's in the top percentile of boxing knowledge, maybe at 2% even.

I refer you to this section of the Constitution:
EXPELLING A VOTER
At its discretion, the voters may bar one of their peers. If any two members of the group formally ask that a member be expelled, a vote will take place on voting Sunday. If the board votes to dismiss the member at a 66.67% rate, that member immediately and permanently is removed from the board and the poster's rankings will not count for that month.
However, if an expelled member would like to reapply, he may wait six months and then do so. The expelled member then will be subject to the same 66.67% rule that applies to the general population.

I'd like to think everyone gets a fair shot, and if they screw around, they get the boot.

He can go over the top often. And I wouldnt trust his opinion too much on anything Calzaghe or Calzaghe related (notice how everytime there is a possible opponent for Joe, CHJ has to make the obligatory thread demeaning them?). But again, he knows his shit....but also can be very hardheaded.

oh i know that hes educated but i also know that he cant take things seriously.....i just think there are more rational posters who should be chosen first (wink wink) i am getting close to that 1000 mark:good
CHJ is very rational, he just bases his opinions on analyzing fight footage, not by popular opinion and resume. This is what makes his choices seem very odd to most posters. Amsterdam does the same thing to an extent. I try to do the same thing where possible also, although it requires viewing a lot of footage which can be very time consuming. However, I also like to take resume into account to a fair degree.
if JOhnco or domgo gett on this i'll leave
Hahaha. My thoughts exactly. Pacman will be the number one contender in every division and p4p no.1---

ow man. these guys only know pac. nothing more. who nominated them?
:good
I figured you were a shoe in and as such didn't vote for you:)

Thanks bro :good ! But Im not in yet.....
I think you haven't seen enough CHJ, he jokes and is sarcastic and says Calzaghe is the best fighter ever 90% of the time and annoys everyone with his repetitive nonsense, and the other 10% he's bashing old time fighters while giving NO reasonable evidence to back up what he says. At least you and Amsterdam(though not when Joe's around for him) make reasonable points. He's just a clown, I really don't see how you gave him a vote, I think it was wasted. You're way better, as is Amsterdam.
You are entilted to your opinion. I can see why you get annoyed, as a lot of people here just praise him because its the popular thing to do. A lot of times I can see what he is trying to do though, and can appreciate the train of thought he is using. Regardless, you got my vote in the first lot of nominations, and I figure the more popular guys will get through no problems. I want CHJ there because he adds diversity to the commitee. He is prepared to be unique at times even if it means getting criticized for it.

I guess being the reigning Boxing Tipping Champ doesnt mean stuff all.
Its not like i can Nominate myself for something like this. Having said that there are plenty of bigger names than myself that should be on this panel before say the expert tippster. But i would say this job would be perfect for say someone like myself that would class himself more an analyst that anything else.

Actually, next month, and anytime thereafter, the only way to get on the committee is to nominate yourself. So if you don't get on this time, you can basically put your name in the hat and see what comes of it:good

Nope, I believe we have 6 more days of voting left. I haven't been on much to day so I don't know the tally. But there are supposed to be 18 members from General and I think only 8 or so were taken after the first tally. So there are spots left.
I was only saying that you CAN nominate yourself from here on out after this initial month. That in fact it was the only way to get on after the first month is on.
There is a constitution, you should check it out. It's a little long, but well written.

Like example.
10 - USA spots
5 - UK spots
3 - European Spots (Not UK)
3 - Aussie Spots
3 - Asian Spots
5 - Latin spots (Mex,PR,Bra etc)
Thats the only way i see it to be fair and get fair voting.

Sorry mate. I was thinking of you, its just there are a lot of people too choose from when there are only two.
You will be one of the first peope I vote to have put forward once it expands.

I would love to see you break down fights more often and discuss how fighters are going to win. Tipping comps are great, and winning does mean something, but when you don't know a lot of the fighters like in ours it detracts from the analytical side to an extent.
I have seen you break down a fight well before, but i don't really read such posts often from yourself like I do some of the other guys here.
I know you don't have much time with the new job so it makes it hard. Would be good if you get a chance to see your thoughts on some up coming fights.
Mosley v Cotto
Kessler v Calzaghe
Taylor v Pavlik
Pac v Barrera
Just as a start. Not doubting you, just saying that if people read more of your stuff then it gives you a better chance of getting nominated.

I guess so. The rest of committee would probably appreciate it, then they could get the sloppy seconds from the powers of the Axe effect.

Half bump, half retort.
The idea of guaranteeing posters from geographic locations is a good idea, but it has its flaws as well. In order to maintain the quota, you may have posters with extreme biases or lack of general boxing knowledge. Then we would just be appointing them based on their location and not their boxing acumen. There have been posters from outside the U.S. that have already made the cut and I'm sure there will be more. But you cant have people on the committee based solely on their origins. This is about fairly assessing and rating fighters, and location should not be taken into account. Most of the people nominated have been so due to their integrity and proven knowledge of the sport, so what logic would you use for guaranteeing some one a spot from another geographic locale if the people nominated are unbiased?
The only logic is access to local televised bouts.

I really don't see the problem with voting for the poster that you think is best. What's the point in insisting upon this or that if you potentially limit the only pure resource you have?

Indeed! The best posters/analysts are the best no because they come from/represent a certain continent, but because they are objective and good at what they do!
Thank you to everyone who elected to nominate me. I accept my nomination and will do my best to make sure ESB's ratings are truly impartial if I end up being elected.

I hope we get another round, because I still want to vote for Requiem and MSTR.
