View Full Version : Recommend me a fighter!

Hello. I thought up this great idea to aid me on my mission for more knowledge as far as the fight game is concerned. I'm thoroughly in love with the sport, but my knowledge is currently confined to post-war fighters it would seem. Not to say I know everything, or even that much, but if you could all recommend me a fighter to watch, read about, and discuss in the future - that would be of great service. Let's think classic, here.

Guys who I've become interested in are Lloyd Marshall, Holman Williams, and Charley Burley. Just like you my knowledge pre 50's is rather thin.

joe gans is one of my top five favorite fighters, he has a fairly new book about him too that you could check out
Young Stribling's story is an interesting one.
Also... just browse the HOF inductee listings. Great way to get started on new guys to learn about.

Joey Archer - fascinating featherfisted middleweight. The last man to beat - and fight - Sugar Ray. Also had wins over Dick Tiger and Hurricane Carter. Never lost a single match by more than a couple of rounds - and his four losses (one avenged) are to some pretty respectable names. The only fighter he fought but never beat was Emile Griffith and they went life and death for 30 rounds.
Good movement, good jab, could infight some, went in and out of a crouch effectively.

Addie, there's a 3 part documentary on Benny Lynch on YouTube that I'd suggest as vital viewing has some decent footage of Lynch in there as well as going a decent insight into just how good he was. Khaokor Galaxy-Sung Kil Moon 2 is a fight I always suggest to everyone, on YouTube and well worth a watch.

Just reread your opening post, on YouTube there is a decent amount of footage of Mickey Walker, Tomy Loughran, Georges Carpentoer and Gene Tunney. Not to everyones tastes but in terms of discovering the evolution of pro boxing these guys are pretty much necessary viewing :good

You can do a lot worse than to check out Sam Langford. This guy mixed it with some of the very best in boxing's modern birth, from Joe Gans at light-welter all the way up to Harry Wills at HW. It's a great window into classic boxing.

May I suggest Pete Herman (February 12, 1896 – April 13, 1973) who was one of the great early bantamweight world champions. Has a win over "little man" legend Jimmy Wilde. Here is a guy who completely changed style during his career - went from being a cute slick speed based outfighter to an in-your-face terror of an infighter with constant pressure.
Why?
The story I read said that when Johnny Buff became Bantamweight champ he beat a blind man for the title... Pete Herman. What I read suggested Herman had been going blind for quite some time and adjusted his style to stay close enough to his opponents to 'feel' them when he could no longer 'see' them. In one of his very last fights in 1922 he knocked out number one contender Packy O'Gatty in one round. By this time he was almost certainly blind in one eye and possibly in BOTH.
Pete Herman was on the Louisiana State athletic commission after he retired (and to my knowledge is the only blind member they ever had serve) and ran a popular night club in his home town of New Orleans.
Very interesting character and great human interest story who is almost completely forgotten today - except by the International Boxing Research Org. who has him as the #4 Bantamweight of all time...
There is FAR more info out there about the incredible little man - I hope I have given you enough to interest you in looking for more :)

His absence at Canastota is one of the most glaring, perhaps right behind Donald Curry's.

I enjoyed reading about Harry Greb, like you, I usually stick to fighters that I can see fight, footage, (& thats still largely the case) but by the sounds of things, Harry Greb was one hell of a fighter & one that should have been filmed at all costs, makes me sad actually :-(

What was Gushiken's strengths and weaknesses?
ADDIE THIS IS A SPOILER, DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT YOUR GUSHIKEN EXPERIENCE TO BE SPOILED! (read last sentence)
I did a thread about him a while back, basically i was just shocked from the first time i saw him. I was doing this thing, the best 108 pound fighters ever, you know, just looking at the division's history. I knew all the names but had'nt seen the footage. Anyway i'll get to Gushiken, typed him into youtube and for me what i saw was a complete fighter, a southpaw, but a technician. Completeness in a stylistic sense, not a natural attribute type thing.
He's quality going forward, he can keep pressure on in a clever, systematic way where he uses combos of hooks and uppercuts, he goes to the body as well. I noticed that he loves going right in to the body with a lead left hand and them coming over the top with a right hook. Then i saw this fight where he boxes on the move, he literally can boxrings around guys, moving circular and just dominating with his right jab, so so smoothe.
His only loss was in his last fight against a guy called Pedro Flores who he already beat. Gushiken was dominating for nearly all of the fight, boxing really well, then he got overwhelmed right at the end by his crude slugging opponent and got stopped. It gave me the feeling that Jung Koo Chang would have beaten him.
Gushiken didn't have a long career and started late, not the greatest fighter by a long shot in terms of accomplishments, but just to watch Addie, possibly my fave.
You might not like him but it's just an opinion thing. Plus the whole thing for me was the shock of how good he was. And i've sort of took the sting out of it for you now.
