Mr IBO Phil,
Out of curiosity more than anything, what happen's from the IBO in relation to one of your champions, and this particular case Sakio Bika who is coming up to a year since he won it, yet with no defence or appearing like having anytime soon?
I like Sakio as a fighter, but geez I like to see him fight more and defend his title.

I asked Phil the same question a few months ago. Phil did say when he needed to defend by, I can't remember the exact date.

Hi guys
Basically the champion must defend his title every 9 months at the extreme. Problem with Sakio is he has received no challenges which makes it a little tough to vacate the title on him, by the same token if he fights two non-title fights in a row he will lose the title anyhow....

Thanks geezer for clarifying, much apreciated.
I don't know who speaks/acts for Sakio, but my 'outside, looking in' impression is that he overprices his worth. There was major talk that previously Mundine offered him an excellent purse, yet Sakio still wanted more?
I couldn't see Sakio putting on his own shows like Mundine, hence who's going to bother challenging him here? He simply wouldn't sell the tickets or be a big enough attraction to the tv powers-to-be here to make a show viable.
Again, I'd love to see him in the ring consistently, we'll just have to wait and see what's next.

Phil, surely it is in the best interests of the IBO to order a mandatory defense and put forward a top 10 fighter from the division? What difference does it make that no one has offered up a challenge....who runs the IBO...promoters?

Agree. Otherwise Promoters could sit on a fighter and his belt forever. Ok, so Sakio has been hard to match. Fair enough.
But tell him he needs to fight his mando or defend OR lose his belt and watch them find an opponent for him. That's if he covets the IBO belt, which I'm sure he does. His career has stalled so he needs it.

If someone was forthcoming with a challenge, you can rest assured that Sakio would not be able to price himself out of it... can hardly say promoters run the IBO considering all the requests we have turned down recently. As I said he will have to make a defence soon...

Without looking to blame anyone, there's a certain amount of Catch 22 about Sakio's situation.
Would be good for all concerned, not the least himself, if he got a title bout set.

But why does IBO not demand a fighter with a title to match up....do they have a say in which top 10 fighter must make a challenge and when it is to happen???
It is clear that if a challenge is put forward Sakio must take it, what about where there is no forth coming challenge.
What do the IBO generals do...nothing???

Nah not at all, he won't just sit there with the title forever. As long as an opponent meets the criteria then that's what concern's us. We are not match-makers in trying to force a fighter to fight a certain fighter and we stay away from mandatories wherever we can

What would be a criteria missing in any of the 10 fighters which currently sit below him in the division for which he holds the title?

I don't know if it can all be attributed as catch 22. As noted previously, it was well-circulated within the industry that there was an 'offer' but forward to fight Mundine, yet it was also noted that Sakio wanted bigger bucks.
Previously winning the 'Contender' in America doesn't quantify in Australia to receiving the big $$$. (means jack shit really!)
Again, he won't put on a show as he's not a draw, i.e sales, yet wants promoters to pay him big $$$. I'm all for boxers being well-paid, but on this one, I'm on the side of the promoter, if the boxer - as a draw, doesn't pull thru gate money or ppv sales, he unfortunately isn't much use to them, quality fighter or not.
Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I like watching him fight, yet him sitting around and not fighting and calling people out for opportunities doesn't mean squat.
COULDHAVEBEEN

The Catch 22 I see is he's very talented (so not just anyone is going to want to go in with him), not a great crowd puller (so the overall booty mightn't be huge), and if he's also over-hungry on the $$$ as some are suggesting, it's a pretty bad mix for teeing up a title fight really.

Well seeing as Mundine can't make middle anymore and Bika is dragging his heals why not order them to fight at a catch weight or strip the pair of them .

No Ash apparently Bika has a Mandatory lined up and i'm just trying to determine who it is and if the said mandatory is within the IBO's top ten rankings , after seeing the IBO's 168lbs rankings anyone of them would represent an exceptable challenge for Sakio Bika and would bring more prestige to the IBO title in general .

I don't think I'm alone in believing that a Mundine-Geale rematch will not take place at all.
Here's three reasons why I think that way,
1. To accept and follow through with a mandatory would show a respect
for the sport itself. He proved at the weigh in 2 nights ago that he has
absolutely none.
2. I don't believe that he has any respect for the IBO either. It"s just
another belt and another reason to blow his own tired trumpet.
3. Last but not least, Geale didn't follow the script first time round. He
actually took the fight up to Anthony ( the joke ) Mundine and almost
pulled it off. How dare he!!!!!
Anybody that still believes this circus act is for real would have to be
certifiable.
Surely there's no one left, Surely

Solid post but sadly there are plenty of his deluded followers still on these boards .
Total lack of respect to his opponent and the sport in general was shown when he didn't even attempt to make weight , why didn't he ? was it because he thought he might need the extra weight just incase his 6 ko career opponent tagged him ala Crazy Kim ? FFS

Mandy has the same attitude to boxing as does Mayweather - "I am the draw, I can do what I want, when I want".
Weighed in 2kgs over - same as Mayweather vs. Marquez.
Won't take fights that challenge him - same as Mayweather.
Will only take fights that he knows he will win and has all the advantages in his favour.
Both yearn for the limelight.
Both trashtalk, or should I say - talk complete and utter drivel.
Both could have a much bigger fan base, and genuine respect if they challenged themselves with the 'right fights', and yet if they lost, would not lose viewing 'appeal'.
Both have genuine ability, yet both will finish their careers with the 'what if / shoulda, would, coulda' next to their names with fans.
Both claim to be No.1
Both have the heart the size of a split pea!

As a boxing fan Ash, you know my last comment would be 'jest' and I dip my hat to all who enter the 'squared circle, however I don't see you disputing any other point. Even you as a nuthugger I would thought you'd jump to his defence.
Let's agree that the Argie cab drivers he's bringing out have now gone way past the credability stage and are just completely disrespectful to boxing and boxing fans.
A Mandy show is just Jimmy Sharman's boxing tent with tv!!! Find a bum sitting in the crowd and invite him on up, the only thing different is Mandy's flying them in!
Presidente' Mandy, oop's I mean Mundine of Argentina is how he'll be introduced soon.

Surely the depth is at a stage where a suitable opponent can be found. Hard roads if no-one is willing to fight Bika for a title.
Introduce an Interim Title at SM/W.. Mundine will be knocking the door DOWN.

It would certainly take courage to jump in the ring with Mikkel Kessler.
Mundine did just that back in 2005 but with a fair degree of naivety and over confidence believing he was ready to take on the world's best.
The reality was the complete opposite.
Since that day Mundine has not fought a top ten fighter from the Northern Hemisphere in either MW division and IMO is highly unlikely to do so any time in the future.
Mundine's career has been mostly smoke & mirrors.
