Lets not, and instead just call it boxing, and be happy with that ??? Using the term sweet science should be grounds for a beating from midgets with sticks !!!

One of the worst misconceptions on ESB is that you dont have skill if you dont fight like SRR, SRL, PW or FMJ. Thats one type of skill, there are many others.

Guys still slip punches, parry punches, find angles, feint set up punches. People back in the 80s decried the lack of skills then and praised the fighters of the 70s and people in the 70s complained about the lack of skills of the fighters in the 70s and worshipped the fighters of the 60s. I don't know what the fans of the 60s were saying because I wasn't around back then but I imagine it was the same thing. Nostalgia has a way of making everything look better.

:good Well said

Not everybody is going to be a skilled boxer ala SRR, SRL, or PBF. Pressure fighters like Cotto, Hatton, and Pacquiao are skilled at what they do.

There are many aspects of the sweet science and without one type of fighter, the sport wouldn't be as interesting or complete.

Exaclty... The aim of boxing is to land the more effective punches.

By the logic of many here, guys like Joe Frazier would have no skill if they fought today (or the guys you mentioned).

Exactly, Mayweather, Leonard, Pep, and Robinson excelled at hit and not get hit. They kept a distance and used their boxing skills to win fights. But Frazier (as you mentioned) couldn't be effective as a boxer, so he fought perfectly for a little man and won fights.

Despite what some may think, you don't have to be a fan of Floyd Mayweather to be a true boxing fan:lol:

Boxing is all about fighting plain and simple. Not dancing, running, avoiding exchanges.

And thats what makes this sport so great! The contrast of styles and mentalities, strategies and attributes. Its great when you have two style that oppose eachother or that compliment eachother.-

I love watching boxers fight, skilled guys like SRR or SRL, or the dazzle of RJJ, but I also love the intracacies of wathcing Duran fight, or the preasure and body punching of Chavez.

If we didnt have all this it wouldnt be boxing!

Dude, it is. You just posted your thread in the wrong part of the forum. There are a lot of salty, disagreeable people that cruise through the "General Boxing" forum. To get the kind of responses you're looking for try re-posting it in the "Classic Boxing" part of the forum.

In one way or another doesn't every thread? :conf

Yea, thats part of boxing. Otherwise it would be a useless and futile attempt at nothing.

You just hope and pray that Hatton would beat Cotto. That is your way to protect that faggot Mayweather.

Apparently, outlanding your opponent by twice as many punches isn't boxing either.

Obviously everyone has skills, some do things better than others but regardless for them to even warrant our discussion you must realize everyone has there own way of doing things right or wrong in your eyes.

boxing is a sport, it's not just fighting. some fighters have particular things they do. some box and move around, some come forward and brawl, some do a little of both. some people expect gatti/ward everytime boxing is on and it isn't fair to boxers who have perfected their craft.

boxing is still about skill, but the essence of the sport has been marred by pay per view, crooked promoters, pay per view, and all these crooked boxing commissions and their dozens of abc titles. casual boxing fans have come to expect bloody battles too much. unlike a lot of so-called boxing fans, i am a fan of the soprt itself, not just a fan of the brutality that it dsplays. i can watch a tactical boxing match just like i will a bloody brawl.

I remember when boxing was all about skill... Lets remenise about the sweet science.

Another new idiot who thinks his view of boxing is the only view. The only science in this sport is knock the guy out or impress the three judges to get a decision. If it was a science all three judge should have teh exact score but thet doesn't happen. So please shut the fuck up about this sweet science. Cause its either knock he other guy out or the judge prefer your style, thats the state of boxing.

Vladimir Klitschko has fantastic skills as a boxer.

Paulie Malignaggi has shown really good skills.

Vitali has very good skills also.

For me, the big difference in styles is what makes boxing interesting to watch and talk about. Its great to watch guys be mobile and avoid getting hit sometimes just as its interesting to watch guys go to the inside and bang a bit. The sport needs all kinds of styles to remain interesting and provoke discussion about who might win a bout.

how old are you then ? Im only 28, is it true that boxing in the 40's, 50's, 60's was more like ballet, like a beautiful performance art where heads never clashed and boers apologised for being a little rough

Shane Mosley , Ricky Hatton, Joseph Calzaghe, Floyd Mayweather and some of Wladimir Klitschko's work for such a large man is very skilful..

I understand that we had some amazing talent in the 50's and 60's Ray Robinson and Cassius Clay are two fine examples , but for todays mega money standards still bring us some great technical athletes..

A lot of junk , but still a lot of talent............
