View Full Version : Is Machida Overrated?

He beat Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans. Silva is not an elite fighter, and Evans only became one after he knocked out Griffin...who isn't really elite either, just got lucky to catch Shogun at the right time. Evans is the guy who couldn't beat Ortiz or evan dominate Bisping.
I'm just really thinking that Machida may be getting overrated a bit here. I'm very interested in seeeing how this fight really plays out.

No chance. The guys hes beaten have been very good. And hes not just beaten them, hes absolutely schooled them
Machida is rightfully in the group of top 5 ultra elite fighters

Why couldn't he finish Tito, he was actually very close to being finished by a triangle from Tito at the end of the fight.

Tito possesses two things - a hard head and a strong ground game. Why should Machida get close enough to bang on Tito's hard ass head and simultaneously make it easier on Ortiz to body lock him and take him down? He fought a smart gameplan and stuck to it.

Look at him like Kessler was looked at. It's not just who he beat BUT HOW HE BEAT THEM.
Never lost a round, never hit, devastating in winning the title etc
He has built up a lovely aura of invincibility that is fun to buy in to.

No
but he didn't dominate all fighters.
Sam Greco whipped him.

Sam Greco whipped him.
What are you talking about? When Greco full kneed him in the nads in the second round?
Machida took down Greco numerous times, limited Greco's offense when he got top position on Machida and aside from some leg kick action, Machida controlled the fight. Greco fought well, but to say he "whipped" him is erroneous.

However this should be his toughest fight because it is against a very skilled and experienced fighter. A win here will put him into the elite top 5 fighters. Machida may be the best fighter out there as far as skill and brains

Well he is trashing whoever they put in front of him. When Machida fought Sokoujou the the guy was coming off brutal KO wins over 2 top 10 fighters Rogerio and Arona and Machida totally dominated him, Ortiz is the longest reigning Champion in that divisons history and yes Machida did dominate him he got caught in a triangle but did escape and dont forget him nearly TKOing Tito, Thiago Silva was unbeaten going in and has since swallowed Keith Jardine and what did Machida do ? He battered that man and knocked him out cold. Rashad Evans was the Champion coming off stoppage wins of Liddell and Forrest who didnt just catch Shogun he dominated Shogun and also outpointed Rampage, Machida made easy work of Rashad and also put him to sleep and violently. Id say hes left no doubt on who the best guy at 205 is right now.

he gets hit twice every 2 1/2 rounds. With that fact alone I think hes underrated.
You cant watch Boxing or MMA and see Machida, his timing, distancing, the best in- game tactics in the history of MMA and not think hes the future of this sport. (If it can approach the level of the sweet science).
Add to that technique, defensive prowess, power/strength, a solid base and speed. You have MMA evolution at its peak.

Good post Jimmie. I just have to add the way he grab a hold of Tito and put his ass down in the mat. This is just not done, with the exception of a HW Couture.
I thought that could have been a fluke, then He threw Thiago like a piece of rag and he swats Rashad like he was a MW.
I mean I see a pattern here, this man is a fuckin Ox. He just moves people with ease.
OK now we know He's powerful, but now think, power is probably the least important facet of his game. Fuckin scary.

Everything he does is amazing I feel like when im watching him is like watching a great Quarterback go to work like a Peyton Manning where he almost already knows whats going to happen before the ball is snapped.

He's a ghost. Tito didn't land one meaningful punch on him all night, and he dismantled Evans.

He is very powerful, but it's positioning and balance that allows him to throw around guys like that

I actually wondered where Dana and Rogan got this fact that its every 2 1/2 rounds. Because truthfully Evens got him once on separate occasions when they engaged. Evans is extremely quick.
Other than that and the Soko fight, hed put Floyd to shame defensively.
You cant even kick this guys legs. Its ridiculous:lol:

That is true he finds the weak lines. But the Tito takedown was just pure strength. I'll have to see it again.

He is kind of overated but not in a silly way, if he can ebat shogun i think he moves up into the relms of silva, gsp, fedor, penn until that win though he is a top guy but just below them.

I know you've watched Machida, so wtf are you even doing asking this question?
Are there hyperbolic statements made about him? Yes. True of any elite fighter.
Is he undeservedly ranked as an elite fighter, based on never having beaten someone who themselves was unquestionably elite? No that's bullshit. Of course he's elite, just watch him fight. Even dominating very good but not elite opponents is enough to tell you he's rated appropriately.

Way overrated, more overrated than Brock. Machida hasn't done shit yet and is already amongst Fedor, Silva and GSP in p4p. You realize he hasn't defended his title ONCE right?
I think Shogun will rip his head off and it will be the end of short lasted piss drinking era.

When you think about the matchup, Machida should dominate Shogun. But at the same time, Liddell should have also according to matchup.
Machida is very focused on his discipline, which happens to be quite focused on countering and taking advantage of offensive mistakes.. Muay Thai, as it is practiced in MMA is an offensive, aggressive style, which plays right into what Machida does. Stylewise, this is Machida's fight to lose. Shogun, in the past has shown he is very dynamic, and relentless when he has opponents hurt. This is going to be a fight about who catches, or counters who first. One way or another it ends in knockout or stoppage.

He was the first, ((I think)) to beat Rich Frankln...also crushed Bonner..He has a strong list of fighters that he has beaten. So NO I don't feel he is over rated.

I think people are overstating his "greatness" in terms of legacy and accomplishments so far; not that he can't fulfill them, just that they are projecting what they think will happen rather than what has.
I don't think he's overrated really, just that people are jumping the gun a little bit with things like "welcome to the Machida era.". There might very well be a long dominate era ahead, and people want to be seen as recognizing that early or predicing it, so they project his ability out over a long time, but this is MMA and he still needs to actually do it.

Machida is almost superhuman, When I see some1 like Machida iam amazed at the gift they seem to have in being able to think and react the way they do in the situations they are in, BJ i see this in most of the time (deff not against GSP it was obvious before the fight BJ was not right) I also see it in Anderson Silva! MACHIDA IS SOMETHING SPECIAL!

Added to the thread? It's my thread, there is nothing more to add to it. Machida was being overrated, he's not even the best light heavyweight. Shogun just beat him at his own game. Now start putting shogun in the top 4 P4P, since hes the same size as machida....but better

He took an ATG - the vintage version of Shogun - to a 5 round decision and still made a fight of it. So how exactly is he over rated? He's a fantastic fighter, one of the very best

Machida isnt so much overrated, it was Shogun getting his old form back more than anything negative concerning Machida.
I was amazed how many knowledgeable guys were picking Machida by easy stoppage, Shogun Rua is one of the greatest 205 lbers that has ever lived, very well rounded & dangerous.
It will be he & not Machida that dominates the LHWTs in the near future I believe.

15 wins against top competition (Franklin, Silva, Ortiz, Evans) don't make you suddenly overrated when the second-best LHW in the world beats you. Don't believe that all other contenders can emulate what Shogun did last night. Machida will adapt and learn.
