Nobody can focus on the fact that Machida took every shot cleanly and he didn't seem bothered at all, or that he was hitting Rua and counter punching. They're both class a, fighters. But apparently, Machida is the next Hatton and he's exposed for his weaknesses and he's going to be outclassed by the next nobody champion everyone believes in.

He showed great defense in the first three rounds. Excellent sub/td defense. Impressive chin and durability in taking all those strafing kicks to the middle. Picture perfect head kicks. Equally effective counter and lead punching.
HOWEVER
The last two rounds, where he shut the fuck down offensively, are inexcusable for a CHAMPION defending his CHAMPIONSHIP.
I can't believe his corner told him to play the fifth safe and not strike too much - I was 100% sure he needed a KO to win at that point. Absolutely terrible advice (hate to say it - but that is, unless they "knew" something we didn't in advance...) and he was a fool to take it. Well maybe not in hindsight, with things panning out as they did. But for him to assume he had a clean sweep on the first three rounds and could take the last two off is not only an inaccurate view of how the early part of the fight went, IMO - it's a really shitty championship mentality.
I was a pretty big Lyoto fan up until tonight. Up until the 4th round, actually.

I honestly think too many people are influenced by Rogan's love of Shogun and outward bias. I almost was, it was hard not to with Rogan constantly commenting on Shogun's leg kicks but wouldn't say fuk all about Machida's punches to Shoguns face 90% of the time.
Fight could've gone either way and Machida made a decent account of himself and so did Shogun. I think everyone was shocked Shogun was even in the fight and that can lead to thinking he was winning it. Maybe he was but it was close.

yup shogun should be the new champion. He came back 100% tonight. He was sharp against a great defensive fighter. Machida has never been hit that much in any of his fight. Prior to the shogun fight he never loss a round. Against shogun he loss 4 rounds but was given a gift from the crooked judges:verysad

Exactly. The whole fucking fight was Rogan "NICE SHOT BY RUA" discounting Machida throwing back, it's not as if he had no answer for it. And then people have the fucking dare to be all "SUCH A ROBBERY, MORE OF A ROBBERY THAN DIRRELL FIGHT. Please, shut the fuck up, you're an idiot. You can't even respect the fight, I haven't heard one person say "good fight but I think this happened", they just shout at the top of lung "ROBBERY".

I was aware of Rogan's disproportionate commentating and also appreciative of Machida's defense and counterpunching, and rooting hard for Lyoto.
He still lost four rounds. Three of them virtually undebatable.

I watched this fight on a huge screen in a noisy bar. I didnt hear what Rogan was saying but man people are making comments bastardizing this great technical fight by screaming robbery. Even my brother in law who was a huge Shogun fan was saying that man maybe rds 4 and 5 werent enough.
It was Shoguns greatest performance tactically and technically and Machida gassed worse than BJ Penn, take that for what its worth

Yup. Bottom line is if you wanna reward the guy with the most leg kicks as the winner, fine but I don't agree. I prefer the guy doing the most work upstairs to the head which Machida clearly did. I had a hard time watching that fight without falling for Rogan's comments. I'd honestly need to watch it with the volume down to really see clearly but I tell you 90% of the exchanges I'd see Machida scoring upstairs and Shogun a kick to the calves or thigh but there goes Rogan disregarding Machida's shots and commenting on Shoguns kicks. It was starting to fuk with my head even. But my buddy was saying the same shit so I knew I wasn't seeing things. lol

1st round Machidas 7 knees, 4 straight counter shots, 2 body kicks Shogun 4 leg kicks one head shot.

FAIL, Lyoto had a HUGE red mark on his ribs at the in the middle of the second, how is that possible if he didn't land anybody kicks, in your assessment anyway? Clearly you are biased towards Machida.
I like both fighters but I honestly didn't care who won but I atleast wanted it to be fair and those judges where not even close to fair. The UFC can't lose its undefeated champion cash cow on his first title defense.

No he didn't.
You guys fail to remember this isn't boxing, in mma you score with kicks to the leg and body, and kness to the legs against the cage (which Shogun landed many in the first 3 rounds) It isn't about just punches to the head.

I'd say he landed atleast 10 to 15 knees on Lyotos legs up against the cage also.

I dont hate Machida but he should have been honest when asked about if he thought he won, you could tell he knew he lost judging by his looks before the decision & his suprise when they called his name.
Shogun answered the debate as to who was the top LHWT in MMA.

He must have been very unsure. He may have felt he lost, but he had his corner telling he had won, and if all 3 judges gave it to him, that would re-affirm that. It's not like he was totally dominated either, so coupled with his corner and the judges, i can see why he might have thought he did win
As for the best LHW, you think Shogun could beat Anderson?

I don't have a problem with Machida (and I still really like him) my problem is the scoring, I now consider and will call Shogun the UFC LT Hvy Champ.
I do, Anderson isn't very aggressive verses dangerous opponents, plus I think Anderson won't take the fight anyway.

Because DURING the fight, when Machida would land upstairs while shogun would land a kick to the thigh or body you'd only here Rogan comment on the kick -- this happened SO many times it's not even funny. It's like Rogan was only watching Shogun out there.

Yes, Id pick Shogun over Anderson but Id pick Anderson or Shogun (as I did) over Machida, those 3 are the cream of the crop tho, I just feel a 100% fit Rua is the best p4p fighter in MMA bar Fedor.

yea but it was only alittle pink, Machida had blood blistering going on. Shoguns kick where by far more effective then Machidas punches.

So, when Machida hit Shogun's fist with his face 20 seconds into the round & when he landed a vicious head butt to Shogun's elbow with a few seconds left, did you count those as body shots for Machida or were they counter rights?
The fact that you only had Shogun landing 3 leg kicks and nothing else (0 knees? seriously?) says everything about your scoring.

Odd way to justify the win. This is like saying Lennox Lewis shouldn't have won his fight agains Tua, because Tua wasn't given much opportunity to fight inside. You think it was in Rua's interest to just try and trade with Machida, to get countered? Isn't part of the fault Machida's for not being able to addapt to Rua's strategy? As for Rogan, I feel he did a decent job, probably giving Machida more credit than he deserved for the few shots he did land in rounds that seemed to be pretty clearly for Rua.. I went in expecting a Machida domination based on style matchup myself.. I was extremely surprised and even a bit disappointed in Machida. Only a blind fanboi would say Machida won that.
Anyhow.. This was Machida's fight to lose.. He's the big counter striker, Rua was expected to go in, go wild and come out in a body bag via counters.. You cant hate on the guy for using his brain and using a style that would force Machida to fight differently. What we saw that fight was a response to Machida's countering style, a response which Machida has no answer for. Stood there waiting for countering opportunities and took brutal leg shots all night.
If there was a lack of action, it's the fault of both fighters defenses, and respect for one anothers striking ability. Every time Rua had an opening to throw something heavy without totally exposing himself, he did, and he landed some.. Machida did a little countering himself as well.

Machida's never impressed me. He has a style that is very unorthodox but i cant understand all the bandwagoners that jumped on this train like Machida was the second coming. He's extremely defensive and very cautious for me his style isnt impressive at all. But iv never seen anything in his striking thats made me think this guy is the goods. Against Shogun he looked distinctly average and frankly amatuerish.

i had this closely, but clearly for shogun, but i still acknowledge the calibre of fighter machida is.
i personally thought, that machida would blast through shogun, based on his less then convincing performances in the octagon. But shoguns awkwardness and willigness to to trade really troubled machida.
this has the potential for an excellent rivalry and im certainly looking for to the rematch.

Actually, the very three that Pharaoh gave to Machida are the ones I feel are indisputably Shogun's.
I've stated my reasons for scoring the first round. Both had moments but it really isn't close if you score the round minute by minute (first two to Lyoto, and then Mauricio won the last 90 seconds equally as convincingly).
Limiting Rua's effectiveness in the last two rounds by refusing to engage doesn't mean that Machida himself was doing the more effective work.
