Ladies and Gentlemen.
A 'Call to Arms' is required from all with the slightest respects for LEGEND LES DARCY.
For 15 years, the Darcy Family Vault has slowly worsened in condition. Due to poor irrigation, based on its location, a wall colapsed leaving a gaping hole in one side. The concrete covered top is also in poor condition.
Expenses for the restoration are close to $65,000.
With Les Darcy, Frank "Frosty" Darcy, parents Ned & Maggie (also another Brother and Sister reportedly), numerous actions have been taken to raise the funds in order to resecure the vault, as well as give the top an appropriate covering, bringing this spectucular monument back to its former glory.
This is by no means a small task, with layers of beaurocratic, civil and other red tape to weave through. All takes a very long time.
The time has finally come for the finances to be raised, and the restoration to begin.
HOW CAN YOU HELP???
To co-inside with efforts by the Maitland City Council & The Les Darcy Foundation.
On offer, in hope of raising $11,000 by the Australian fans in general is the chance to purchase a 200mm x 120mm Plaque, each individual Plaque denotes one of Les Dacry's fights. 55 Plagues in total to be sold.
Being made of Bronze, 'YOUR NAME' will be placed on the corner of the piece, a Bronzed Picture of Les, as well as Les Darcy vs ??, Date, Year and Result.
HOW MUCH??
$400
The actual bronze Plaque costs close to $200 to make, therefore a cost of $400 is set for the sake of raising those $11,000.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PLAQUE??
Upon purchase, the Plague will be placed on the Black Marble Steps that surround the Les Darcy Statue in Maitland.
WHY???
Les Darcy is without doubt a LEGEND of Boxing in Australia. Had he not been taken so young, his impact on the World stage would have changed the shape of the games history.
WHO??
For all enquiries, please contact
Mr. Arnold Thomas 0407 350 383
Mr. Tony Hood 0402 075 804
*Coporate Logo's, Business or Company Names will NOT be acceptable, as the 'Les Darcy Trust' stipulate.

A good cause if ever there was one!
IMO the Aus Gov ought to tip in for this, or at the very least offer a tax deduction for those who do.
Surely a must do for former/current boxing champs to have their names on what has the potential to be a great monument to not only Les Darcy, but to Australian boxing as a whole.

Definately agree with the tax deduction. If you put $500 into the account, we'll return $100. :D
All jokes aside, the vast majority of funding will come via the Maitland City Council, The Maitland Bowls Club & The Mailtland Leagues Club.
The offer proposed is nothing more than a very, very unique opportunity for individuals from all facets of the Boxing community to unite and pay hommage to The Maitland Marvel.
Families of former Darcy opponents have already dipped into their pockets to obtain the Plagues concerned with the Family member who contested Les Darcy.
Jimmy Clabby, Grand Nephew of Jimmy Clabby was in Australia for the last HoF Dinner in Melbourne, visited Maitland with Mr. Arnold Thomas and felt the immediate worth of purchasing such a Plague. A very respectful man.
The Whitelaw family, still residents of the Hunter Valley also purchased the appropriate Plagues.
Geoff Pritchard, Grand son of Darcy trainer Dave Smith, 2x opponent also, has placed his money on the table also.
Myself have chosen the Darcy vs Depena Plague. Darcy's first intenational opponent who was Sam Langfords protege'..... until Darcy Knocked him senseless.
Mr. Arnold Thomas has put his money forth also.
This is a non-profit sitution. Quite simply YOUR chance to show reverance and respects to Les Darcy.
Correction. Mention the R.S.L Club as being financiers... I'd be incorrect to assume that.. Will call for any relative info.

Maitland is DARCY Town. Many of the local establishments are well and truly behind the project. I'll be sure to ring the R.S.L tomorrow for their views of the monies put forth.
No doubt, they have thier veiws, as we all do.

That pic will be featured in the March section of next years 'Men of Australian Boxing' calendar.
Phil Austin will also be featured, from August to December. Strangely the pic was shot from a few kms away, yet they still had trouble confining him to just one month.

Well said mate. Just for matters sake, a few former greats will be placed on the plaques as far as 'honourary' sponsors.. Fammo, Lionel and numerous others have been already been selected by generous folk to accompany their own name as sponsor. Keith Ellis was VERY quick to say yes to one with his name and Russell Sands Jnr being honoured also. Unfortunately, Keith is in a bad way and his monies are much better off being placed towards his own rehabilitation. Keep punchin' Keefy :bbb
Perhaps someone would like a plaque to encompass their own name, as well as Keefy and Russell Sands Jnr?? Dave Sands, Jimmy Carruthers, Young Griffo, Ron Richards... there's plenty.. literally hundreds of GREAT names deserved of a mention as 'honourary' sponsor.

Josey, Old Fred Dyer will take pride of place on two seperate plaque mate. He fought Darcy twice... Darcy and Dyer had a very close friendship, as all opponents did (except Jeff Smith) and Dyer goes hand in hand with the Darcy legend mate.
Dont panic padre'... Fred's already accounted for. I believe both plaques have been sold.

Josey, yes its in the East Maitland cemetary. In the vault is little brother Frank 'frosty' Darcy who died aged 19 from the Spanish flu epidemic in 1919. Both parents and eldest brother Cyrill are said to be entombed also, as well as one sister. I have viewed recent photographs which show the inside of the vault. Les' casket is clearly visible, yet the rest of the space is covered by a couple of cubic meters of soil and colapsed brickwork. It will be an interesting project determaning exactly who is were.

Yes and he travelled all around the world fighting them RA , the man was a talented singer also , apparently he only boxed when the singing gigs dried up . not a banger as his record suggests but he could BOX with the best ( and they didn't get any better than Darcy in that era ) all the best .

Mate, on the topic of Ed Williams.. he was no slouch. Had an epic set of battles with Aussie icon Arthur Cripps, and also won the Oz M/W crown..
Fred Dyer, just like Jimmy Clabby, coming to Oz and tackling the best M/W's, Lightheavies and Heavies.. these blokes didn't stuff around. If your friend would like info regarding Dyers trip down under, I can help in providing a heap of info and resources.
I wrote an earlier message that failed to appear on this forum.. fkn wireless broadband!!!.. Jimmy Clabby (grand nephew of Jimmy Clabby) was in Oz for the HOF... He's also writing a book about his great uncle and took a trip to Maitland and Darcy's grave.. His whole experience changed his appreciation for that era of Oz boxing.
