What do we make of the German based Syrian? He has quite an interesting story.

Background info:

- Born in Beirut, Lebanon.

- Full name is Mahmoud Omeirat Charr.

- Stands 6ft 3˝ or 192cm and weighs on average 245lbs.

- Lived in Germany since 4 years old since his family escaped from civil war in Lebanon, son of illegal immigrants and because he did not carry the relevant passport and work permits he wasn't paid for at least his first 7 fights.

- He is a former kickboxer, but they realised he was knocking his opponents out with right hands. Uli Wegner spotted him and asked him to come to the gym, he sparred with Valuev and Sinal Sam where he claims they were no problem !

- Amateur background is limited, he reached 10-1

- Promoted by Dietmar Poszwa and trained by Fritz Sdunek.

He has some interesting things to say...

'It helped me a lot (sparring with Valuev/Sinal Sam). They are very good fighters and I was young and learning so it was a big challenge for me to spar with them, but, like I said before, they were not really a big exercise for me'.

When asked if he gave Povetkin problems in sparring...

(Laughs) 'Yes, of course, you can ask him yourself. He had a lot of problems against me. I have no respect for him and I would fight against him every time, with or without money.'

What is his opinion on the heavyweight division...

'It’s terrible! Besides Wladimir Klitschko, Ruslan Chagaev and Alexander Povetkin there’s nobody. All the others are only circus fighters…Oh, except Samuel Peter, I like him.'

Thoughts? :yep

"...Oh, except Samuel Peter, I like him"

I watched his fight against this Nigerian guy (Olukun?) and remember thinking something along the lines of "Meh, seems pretty average".

I watched a few videos too. Thought he had a good story more than anything, a Syrian fighter nevermind heavyweight is not an everyday occurance ! :p

He seems bull strong, very plodding though.

He was beaten by Carrion but got a gift decision. Charr is nothing special.

He is,rapidfire! There are not that many Arab heavy weights out there.
Adminttingly, his victory over the former Cuban amateur star was quite controversial, but he has scored some decent victories since then.
Gbenga Olokoun and Sherman Williams are very decent scalps for a fighter with just 13 pro fights, dont you think so?
He seems to be a bigmouth as he has uttered some derogatary comments on Povetkin and some other fighters, but he is young and will surely find his match when he faces better fighters.
I always prefer the more colourful bunch of cut flowers, rapidfire! Thats why I am glad that someone like Charr campaigns at heavy weight.

Charr's TKO over the Nigerian Oloukun impressed me. Charr seems strong; a good puncher. His next seven or eight fights should tell us if he has the ability to emerge on the world stage. We should definitely be watching him closely.
