Anthony Mundine targets three of the biggest names in world boxing

By Adrian ******
October 22, 2009

Anthony Mundine has called out three of the biggest names in world boxing and told his fans to expect big things next year.

Mundine, the No.1 contender for the WBA middleweight title held by Germany's Felix Sturm, kept busy with an easy ten round unanimous points win over Argentina's Alejandro Falliga ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) in a non-title fight in Launceston on Wednesday.

Before a mooted April re-match, Mundine is scheduled to fight the winner of an Australian reality TV boxing show.

Frequently criticised for not taking on the bigger names in the middleweight division, 34-year-old Mundine insisted he had been trying to arrange just such a clash.

Following the Geale fight, Mundine issued a challenge to WBO and WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik and another American, Paul Williams.

Pavlik and Williams were meant to be fighting each other in Atlantic City on December 5, but the WBC and WBO champion has postponed his title defence because of an infection in his left hand.

Mundine also called out another American superstar, Ronald "Winky" Wright, a multi world title belt-holder at junior middleweight.

"All my fans stay with me, we've got some big things happening next year, so we're going to show the world that we are number one," Mundine said in his post-fight ring interview.

How can you argue with that logic :D

Winky ? Pavlik ? Farking hell one has been semi retired for donkey's years and the other has one hand , why didn't Mundine pitch for the fight with Williams when the Williams / Pavlik fight was called off ?

The point of this thread is that Mundine has tried to fight bigger fighters without much reply....we know Bika got a "fair" offer and turned it down.

I also read that Mundine had tried several times to get Pavliks team as well.

So what does Mundine need to do to get the bigger fights?

I think he needs to forget about the bigger fights and target name fighters from the states ranked around 25 like Manfredo and Lyell.

After beating them maybe the bigger fights will come off.

Not run from them when they present itself (Kessler last year) :yep

No point in fighting Kessler again mate.....Mundine wont beat him.

Hes got his best title chance against Sylvester and the IBF....hope he gets this fight.

The only other title fight he has a "small" chance in is against Pavlik in the states....I dont think he can beat Sturm in Germany.

Here's an idea:

Go to the US, develop a profile over there (other than the one he currently has, which is 'that guy who got KTFO by feather-fisted Ottke'), and force a fight with Pavlik, Williams, etc...

BTW, what ever happened to the big meeting/negotiations he was supposed to have had with DLH/GBP last year? All that's come out of it is his phizog on the Australian cover of Fight Night 4 :yep

So, what we know is that he has a fight soon with the finalists of the Contender on the undercard, then a fight against the winner of the Contender, then a rematch with Geale...how's he gonna fit in Pavlik, Williams, Sturm, etc?

I said no point in Mundine fighting Kess or Sturm because he wont beat them

Best shot is at Sylvester.....this is a 50/50 fight

Then Pavlik....Mundine has 25% chance in this fight but could pull something out of the hat or at least look good going down :yep

Yeah but, if it's okay for Mundine to run away from his mandatory in Kessler because he can't beat him, you should extend the same courtesy to all these big name guys who are ducking Mundine for the same reason :yep

Tend not to agree.....no point in fighting a guy you wont beat.....much better taking on a guy you have a chance of beating....Mundine has a good chance against Sylvester and some sort of chance against Pavlik.

Kessler would beat Mundine if they fight again.

How about this fight?????????????????????

Mundine VS Golovkin for the interim WBO world title

Pavlik is now super champ :hey

Golovkin is 17(14) -0

Would this fight get the aussie ESB stamp of approval?

You're missing the piont - why would Pavlik, williams, Sturm etc. agree to fight Mundine if they can't beat him?

You've given Mundine the free pass on avoiding Kessler for that very reason, please extend the same consideration to Pavlik, Williams and Sturm...and any other world class boxer who has ducked Mundine (Calzaghe, Hopkins, Wright, RJJ, etc.)

i'm not sure how mundine can step up in 2010 looking at his schedule...he fights in january 2010 on the night they decide the winner of the contender, then he needs to defend against geale if he wants to keep his ibo belt, then somewhere in there he needs to fight the winner of the contender. thats 3 fights already in 2010....so i'd love to see a big fight but not holding my breath - unless it happens later in the year

He can pull out of any of those fights mate....even the Geale fight provided he sets the deal with Geale before the due date and geale/ IBO agrees.

There was very little hype, just two skilled fighters.

I'd get over the Pyatt V Kelly shafting & the scar of Vito getting starched by Richie err,,,very early :D,,, just to see that title renovated to it's halcyon days status. :good
