View Full Version : Anybody remember Jukka Jarvinen?

A Finnish heavyweight that found his way into the book "Rocky Lives" by going 17-0 and then losing to 2-5 journeyman Petr Hrivnak in two rounds. Anybody even recall the fight or was it too obscure?
Järvinen had ok skills but had no serious power. KO loss in round 1 to Tony Halme about tells it all. Still, I´d call him a boxer, not a journeyman. At his peak, Järvinen was maybe even good enough for some EU rank list or so... but he fought some terrible fights too.

In my eyes Järvinen was terrible. He got knocked out several times already in the amateur ranks. Järvinen had the worst china-chin that I have ever seen. Every time someone just touched his chin, he was badly hurt or went down. And I do mean EVERY time. And the guy had no survivor-insting either. When he was hurt he always got also knocked out.
Järvinen had no offence. He was a pure countrer puncher. All that he did do in his fights was that stood there and waited his to do a mistake. He did not have any KO-power (he did not stop anyone (not even 0-14,(12 by KO Mikhail Nikitin) from 1996-2005), but he had some stiff punches and most of all he looked great. He had a great body, so most of his opponents was afread of him. Some of his opponents did not know that all they had to was to land one punch at his chin and the muscular man would cramble. Järvinen was a left handed and I bet that he had a akward style. He looked great and made no offence. So, the opponent had to start all the action. Järvinen won many of his fight simply becouse his opponent did not do anything. 90% of his fights were very boring. Usually both boxers throw about 1-2 punches per a round :yep.

For what I saw there was no way that he would had ever beat someone from EBU:s EU list...
Englishman Pele Reid is the last ranked (20th) heavyweight in European Union rankings... And I would bet my life that even todays over the hill Reid would stop Järvinen inside 3 rounds. And also other guys in the list would beat Järvinen. No doubt about it.

Maybe it's late, but I almost pissed myself laughing at this post. :rofl
I have never heard of Jarvinnen (sp?), btw.

The more well known Järvinen from Finland is a cross-country ski manufacturing company. I don't know if they're in business either these days :)

Hrivnak was actually an ok amateur. Twice in the olympic quarterfinal losin to Bowe and Nielsen. He was rated top10 in the world as an amateur several times. Jarvinens record is extremely padded though.

Perfect example of how a good amateur background doesn't necessarily translate into success in the pro ranks. Henry Tillman and Tyrell Biggs are other good examples.

Even MORE well known Järvinen was Albert Järvinen (R.I.P.).
By the way, no one needs to beat anyone from some list to be on it. About 80% of the fighters on EBU or EU lists haven´t fought the other guys from those lists. Look at John Duddy, he hasn´t beat ANYBODY and yet he´s placed well on world lists, and I mean ANYBODY because he´s like 4th or 5th challenger to PAVLIK now. Jukka Järvinen could have made it on EU list by winning some decent wins more instead of falling to Halme and that one guy who beat him before that. He could have been schooled by Pele Reid and yet that does not mean anything considering him being on that list.

Does anybody actually have the fight with Jarvinen and Hrivnak? That's what I want to know.

Who gives a fuck about listings if the guy don´t earn his place there. And Mr. Pertti Augustin from Finland is working the EBU ratings. So you think that someone that have seen Järvinen would rank him anywhere? No fucking way.
BTW did you know that Järvinen have actually been ranked #2 in the world! And that was few years after his "prime".
"Jukka Järvinen could have made it on EU list by winning some decent wins more " --> WTF? Järvinen never had no decent wins. Järvinen himself has said in many interviews that his best win is over Jack Jackson, who was 1-11 at the time. That just tells all abour Mr. Järvinen. He needed a terrible hometown decision to get a win over 2-6 Ladislav Husarik. There was no way that Järvinen could had got any "more decent wins".

I have 10 of Jarvinens fighs, but not the one against Hvrivnak. The fight might excist on tape, as I have Mikael Lindblads fight against Ladislav Husarik from the same bill from a swedish TV Channel.

Look man. Anyone can say that Khoren Gevor didn´t deserve to be a mandatory for Abraham, or that Griffin shouldn´t be one for Sturm, but THEY ARE/WERE. They are ranked #1 and ar getting the world title fight because of that. I´m no gonna bother my head if there´s 100 fighters out there who could deserve it more.
I rather focus on the fights that actually take place and determine the champions. If Järvinen would of been ranked in EU list, the EU champ could have picked him to fight for EU title, and Järvinen...well...theoretically...could have won!
In the end it´s pointless to argue about IF and BUT. Most world contenders haven´t beaten anyone tough to prove their worth. That´s just not the way that boxing works these days. Only facts matter. Fact is, fighter xxx won the yyy title by beating a pile of bums and then the champ. That happens a lot. They are still champions. Basta.
By the way, It´s GREAT to hear that Järvinen was ranked that high. I guess Lennox was the champ and Järvinen was ranked 2nd right after Rahman? or Akinwande? Can´t really remember how it went back in change of the century.

The World Heavyweight Boxing Title (IBU) was vacant at the time. Dirk Wallyn was ranked #1 and Järvinen #2.

I'm into obscure stuff. Do they play on a standard US VCR? I wanted to buy some fights from a guy in england a few years back only to find out that the tape format was different. Send me a PM.

Hi Cruiser1
I am not able to send PM´s. You are not able to read European PAL system video tapes on your NTSC player, but with dvd´s there are no problems with format. I trade with people all over the world.

I think Järvinen should really make a comeback since he´s in awesome shape.
I´m predicting an eliminator tournament for the Finnish Heavyweight title mandatory spot.
The tournament could include Järvinen, Allan Grönfors, Boogie Mustonen and Umar Kemiläinen. The winner would be awarded with a shot at the title. Then the winner of that title bout would be ranked on EU list. I truly hope this happens. It´s time to see some heavyweight excitement in Finland and Europe!

Järvinen was over the hill 10 years ago and he was never any good anyway. The light heavyweight Grönfors has retired a couple of years ago. Boogie Mustonen would never get a pro-licence, becouse he can not box at all. Nor would he even try to get a licence, becouse he is a bobybilder and uses roids.
Umar Kemiläinen is the only even decent boxer of these four. He is a good prospect, but a light heavy or a cruiserweight. It is 100% sure that this your dream-tournament does not happend. If it would I would bet my life that Kemiläinen would stop Järvinen and Mustonen inside one round. Grönfors might go the a 4 round distance with Kemiläinen, but surely Grönfors would not survive 10 rounds.

There is no way that victoryes over Järvinen, Mustonen and Grönfors would lift Kemiläinen to the EU list. :-( Wins over totals bums do not count.
And nobody else than you in the Europe would give a fuck about these 3 bums. Kemiläinen is the only good guy of these.
Are you working in EBU, since you know that? I know 1000 fighters who have beaten only "bums" and are ranked somewhere.
I know many people who give a fuck about them so you are proven wrong.
I would bet my whole current wallet that Järvinen would win this tournament. Pele Reid, he´s gonna take your ranking!

He is seen in many boxing events. He is still in great shape. I am not sure about his profession. At least some time ago he helped kids with problems.
I really don´t understand why Jukka says the win over Jackson was the best one. Makes no sense. He has several quality wins from those same years. The guy with a 6-6 record he beat twice. He also beat 11-12-1 slugger t a 8-round decision. He also knocked out a load of debutants. Jukka was the man. I think Järvinen is still the best heavyweight in Finland. He would outbox Markkanen, outslug Helenius and outsmart Elovaara. Halme he already beat. Kihlström would of been done in 1 round with Jukka. Boogie Mustonen wouldn´t even have dared to fight Järvinen. Against Haapoja Jukka would prevail by physical strength. Kemiläinen vs. Järvinen would be a war, but I doubt Umar will fight Jukka, since Jukka might be in a better shape than him right now. Grönfors...somebody told me he ducked Järvinen all the time...
Jukka jÄrvinen, come back!
The heavyweight division needs you...
JÄrvinen still has a great 23-7 record...
Ebu-eu title is a possibility!
