FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
“Action” Jackson Asiku will carry the hopes of two nations on Friday night.
The 31-year-old, born in Uganda and now a resident of Australia, meets Mexican veteran Heriberto Ruiz for the vacant International Boxing Organization featherweight title in a scheduled 12-rounder at Leagues Club in the Sydney suburb of Parramatta.
It’s the first world title try of a nine-year professional career for Asiku, who turned pro in 2000 after representing Uganda in that year’s Summer Olympics in Sydney. He’s since fought 21 of his 28 bouts on Australian soil, including nine times since last losing there.
Overall, he is 25-3 with 13 knockouts.
Ranked in super featherweight, Asiku returns to the 126-pound class where he scored his most significant recent victory – a ninth-round TKO of former IBO champion Gairy St. Clair last April at Challenge Stadium in Perth.
In that fight, he dropped St. Clair twice and scored the stoppage when referee Gary Ingraham halted the proceedings after St. Clair rose for the second time at 2:02 of the ninth.
The win avenged an eight-round decision loss to St. Clair in Sydney in 2003.
Asiku, who spent the summer in Las Vegas working with former IBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., has previously held the Australian, African and Commonwealth titles at 126 pounds, but missed out on a previous IBO title shot when a date with South African Thomas Mashaba fell through.
He is aiming to become the latest in a string of Ugandans to win recognized world championships, following countrymen Ayub Kalule, Cornelius Boza-Edwards, John Mugabi and Kassim Ouma.
Ouma was the most recent of the quartet, winning a title at 154 pounds in 2004 and defending once before losing it nine months later.
“I’m in great shape. The Mayweather camp in the United States was a real boost to my preparations,” Asiku said. “It was a great learning experience to be in the presence of such a superstar. I definitely got some tips that will be of great help in the upcoming fight.”
Ruiz, who turned 32 last month, scored a third-round TKO over Cristobal Teran in August to improve to 42-8-2 in a career that he began as a teenager in 1994.
He was stopped in three rounds by Rafael Marquez in a bid for the IBF title at 118 pounds in 2004, but has since held national and regional titles at bantamweight and super bantamweight.
He is ranked No. 18 at featherweight by the IBO.
About the IBO
From its inception, the IBO's mandate has been to bring honesty, integrity and trust to boxing. The record shows that it’s been – and continues to be – successful.
That's why world class talent like Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko, Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao, Chad Dawson and so many others have been proud to wear IBO title belts. And that’s why the IBO's objective, comprehensive computerized rankings remain the most reliable and honest in the sport.
When you associate with the IBO, you send a message to boxing. It's a statement of your commitment to maintaining credibility in the greatest, purest contest of human ability in the world. "The Champion of Integrity" invites you to be part of the revolution.

He's improved sooooo much in his last 10 fights or so...
Except for his last fight where he had a draw with Junmar Dulog over 4 rds. But I heard he was sick before that fight.
Top fight. All over it like calomine location. Just hope Ruiz handles feather. It may be too big for him. If not, it's a WAR.
I'l tip you an upset on the under: Flash Villacura over Dean Livanos. Flash hasn't won a fight in his last ten starts. He'l win this. You be the judge because over 4 rds, I'm not expecting any favors from the judges.
edit: was looking forward to being at this show. outside influences prevent my attendance. *sniff* *sniff* LOL

Well he fought at feather last fight out and got the choccies so should be good. TBH PJ you can't bang on too much about the Dulog fight; I mean no disrespect to Junmar who is a warrior and a fighter's fighter, but it is pretty hard to get up for a 4 rounder against him when your previous fight was against a former world champion in a title fight....

Probably true. But I really think Asiku has real problems with south paws. I'm sure prior to the fight, most pundits had it a shut out to Asiku, but Dulog finished over him in rds 3 and 4. Apparently the whole Christian camp was sick with the flu at that time so he probably wasn't up to it physically.
On the south paw thing...remember Olartes dropped Asiku too. So maybe their is something in that.
Phil, Ruiz fought a guy who was 1-22 at his only feather weight fight. Hardly a guide. Corey Brown would have beaten him 5 minutes after winning the Melbourne Cup.

Friday night, hmm? If memory serves from the Tua fight, "main event" time in the Oceanic zone translates to very late the previous night (or very early the same morning, depending on your perspective) EST.
This would be cool to check out if there were means and it was starting at a reasonable hour (a big pot of coffee'll set anything right at 5am or later, as long as it's early to bed on the eve).
Otherwise I'll be looking to you good sirs for a thorough RBR and pics/clips if possible. :good

It's one of the best match ups we have had for a loong time. Like you say, we don't normally get good Mexican fighters down here. Even with the weight disparity, gut feeling says Ruiz will give Asiku hell.

Good qty event for a friday nighter. It's the first ok qty mexican to ever come here.Ruiz is a 122 pounder moving up in weight. He has been with the best.A journeyman who has been stopped before he will be up for whatever the african brings in the ring and like all mexicans Ruiz will be a tough fight. He does have good power more pop than Dulog lets see this africans chin.
The undercards is shite as usual, but whatever.
One of those stoppages was to a prime bantamweight Rafael Marquez, and the other to Alejandro Valdez (who by accounts was getting the better of Fernando Montiel and dropped him early on in their recent technical draw).
Video on Jackson seems to be ethereal, but he seems to have had a Hozumi-like resurgence of power the last few years judging by the trail of early endings and an early loss to Gairy St. Clair avenged by TKO.
This looks very interesting.

Great main event tonight, good luck Jackson, now everyone remain seated as we gather speed towards our next destination, um, Beltdown. Belttown?

I've been sleeping on my back for a week, thinking about the main event.
Don't forget the upset.... Flash Villacura will roll Dean Livanos. Lost his last ten straight, still wins tonight. As I said, you be the judge. 6 rounds. I tipped Cerniza to knock off Luxford. He did, but you know the rest...
Flash was 0.5kg over last night.

Great win by Jackson.
The ref IMO should have stopped a couple seconds earlier as Ruiz was done.
I was actually chatting to someone about this stoppage who has watched boxing for many more years than myself...& while he agreed it should have been stopped slightly earlier he told me that this way the mexican camp cant go home claiming it was a premature stoppage as Ruiz was brutalised.

Excellent performance by Asiku. He'l take a lot out of that. Ruiz can fight.
Ruiz just wasn't strong enough to hold the center and keep Asiku off him. He landed some great counter right hands but Asiku just kept coming forward and backing him up. Asiku showed he is very well conditioned.
I thought the ref should have stopped it a few seconds earlier...definately before the last punch landed when Ruiz was already bent over.
We need more quality fights like that.

Well exactly when do they decide enough is enough? What we see on TV is not what is always going on.
Ruiz walked back to his corner & from what I saw was coherent & satisfied that he was given his best chance, & that's also what the referee is supposed to assess as well.
Unfortunately, Mexicans have a reputation for wanting to "fight to the death" & they will give the referee holy hell if he gets too cautious.
As for Jet lag. I don't know the exact date this fight was contracted on, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't some weeks away. So whose fault would it be that he was Jet Lagged?
When a manager does a deal, he's supposed to factor all these things in & ensure the fighter is well looked after. Promoters are not expected to make demands about what's best for a fighter. That's what the trainer is for.
You're not looking at the whole picture.

I agree... have no problem with the ref pulling it up and ending the fight before the a fighter becomes a victim of a punishing bout. Ruiz was shot and copping a hiding on the ropes....seen many fights stopped at this stage and nobody has complained...Ruiz didn't win a round he was goneski.

I had it 68-66 Asiku after 7.
I scored rds 1 and 5 for Ruiz with the sixth rd 10-10.
Asiku dominated just about everywhere other than punches landed. Ruiz landed a good deal. Up until rd 7, their wasn't a great deal in it but Asiku turned it up a notch and Ruiz tired.
But you always got the feeling that the second half of the fight would be Asiku's because Ruiz never really hurt him and Asiku was getting in the groove and looking strong.

He wasn't ready for Villacura Kegs.
We're trying to get Seran or Olartes for heath Ellis on Dec 20. Lets see if they take it.
Seran would be bad news for Heath Ellis

Full credit to the Bohol team in getting Villacura & Seran in tip top shape to defeat there favoured Aussie foes.
I dont think Ellis's team will go near Seran now after that win, but i hope they do.
Would be a terrific fight which Seran would certainly be a live underdog.

I only turn up when they need help in the corner. They didn't need any last night. :)
I felt for Angelo. I really did. Two of his boys ko'd on his own show.
That's what we do when you stir the Bohol Beast!!!
Amusing trip to the airport yesterday Balders - Steve Marshall says "I heard this bizarre conversation last night, some bloke says to his mate I need to buy a ticket and sneak in when H or Pat aren't around" There is a moments silence and then Pat who is driving us says describe what he looks like which Mr Marshall being an astute bloke does.... to a T! Cue another short silence followed by "Fucking Baldeen!" Busted pal!!! :rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl

LOL. I can imagine the cursing but I'm a little confused as to the accuracy of the info. Are you saying I was there? :?

Unless there is somebody else out there that has been banned from attending their shows and matches your description, actually could be just about anybody! LOL :p

Well sorry to dissapoint all concerned but I can categorically say I wasn't there. :tong
Alas, it sounds like I'm not alone on H's banned list. What's next, photo i.d. required at his next show?
Watched it at my house Phil. I don't know who Steve Marshall is (might recognise his face, heard the name)
This is all very "fugitive" like. :hat

Seriously Phil, I wasn't there. Watched it at home with the two boys fighting in Bris in two weeks.
What were the scorecards at time of stoppage? I scored rds 1 and 5 for Ruiz with the 6th even.
I think I had 68-66 Asiku after seven. How did that card compare?

A little bit off, not much though. Giving Ruiz 2 and 1 drawn rounds was a tad generous IMO. He was always in the fight but was only winning about a minute of a round. One judge had 2 drawn rounds, one gave him 1 round and the other had one drawn round

No arguments with those cards. Always sensed Asiku was going to pull away with the fight though. As I said before, up until the 8th, Asiku controlled every part of the fight, but I still thought the crucial "punches landed" stat was fairly even, Asiku getting the nod in more rounds.
Which I suppose is a hard one for a judge to decipher. Is it confusing Phil when you have a fighter not controlling a round, not the stronger guy, not the better anything...but still landing his fair share of punches? how do you score that?

Well it can keep him in the contest mate but from the way you have described it you'd have to say the other guy has landed his fair share which given what else has happened would give him the round. Sometimes it's hard to continually go against one bloke who is trying but getting no-where, one judge remarked he was pleased that the fight ended inside the distance as it would have been unfair for Heriburto to have lost such a lop-sided decision given the effort he put in had the fight continued on it's course. You can't however score "mercy" or "sympathy" rounds as it then affects your credibility to score it the rightway always under all conditions. Kind of like Hatton-Lazcano, considering how gamely he tried he never did enough to win a round under the rules of scoring IMO because you can't give a bloke a round for winning only 30 seconds of it no matter how well he went in that time without scoring a knockdown. All judges in this situation are thinking "oh please sweet Jesus let the other judges be seeing this the same way!" LOL The other thought that went through my mind was "Oh, I bet Baldeen is gunna love this!" LMAO

LOL. Nice to know I was part of your inner most thoughts whilst you sat ringside to judge Hatton/Lazcano in front of 40,000 people.
Pertinent points you mention there. I note you do allude to ring generalship as being a criteria for scoring a round
quote: "you'd have to say the other guy has landed his fair share which given what else has happened..."
And that seems to be accepted everywhere. I mean their is other considerations other than punches landed.
Interestingly enough, we had a meeting with a number of nsw boxing authority officials around 2 years ago... about interpretations of scoring etc etc (we felt we couldn't get a decision). Gary Dean specifically stated that a fight is scored simply on punches landed, nothing else. He specified that power isn't a factor, it's simply a tally of punches and if fighter A lands two punches, to fighter B's one heavy punch...then fighter A is in front.
He couldn't have been more definate about his interpreation of how to score a round. Ring generalship and other intangibles like effective aggression weren't appropriate in his opinion.
So I guess he has a very basic principle of scoring. It might be the best system at the end of the day. But it's obviously a lot more narrow than most judges interpretation of effective scoring. Which makes things a little confusing. Scoring is such a subjective thing, no doubt, but you would like to atleast think that every judge uses the same criteria or principles. Doesn't seem to be the case. Anyway...my rant for the day. I might have another one later. :think

No not at all, I was referring to the scenario you mentioned. The most important criteria is punches landed, if equal effective aggression, if equal better defence. Some judges do include power as a criteria which I disagree with as it discriminates against a light hitter
