Pretty good. Solid Euro level/ fringe world class.

A Warrior who just operated on the outskirts of world class championship boxing. He would be a fight for a solid world champion. The Ward-Neary fight was very even up and till the stoppage. If he met a better boxer he would be exposed but no one could question his heart. He wasn't just a brawler though he boxed well enough for a aggressive brawler. He beat Magee imo aswell so that showed what he had something about him.

Had very little amature experience, but went on to be wbu champion and got as high as number 9 in the world in the ring magazine ranking, was in a classic battle against micky ward and stopped former british champion andy holigan in a all liverpool fight

Yeah it was a robbery. It was the fight that really ended him sadly. If he won there he could of went on a fought a Witter or Hatton.

A Great warrior, and a really nice bloke, i met him in Huddersfield at a BBBofC disciplinary board a couple of years ago when he was applying for his trainers license, and had a really nice talk with him, came across a a genuinely nice guy, there were a couple of young fighters there, and before he left he went and had a chat with them and wished them well, a nice guy IMO.

Suffered for the WBU route he took but went to war every time and deserved more exposure.
From memory, ITV screened his fights way too late.

One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Always a true gent whenever I've met him.

From a boxing point of view, I rated him very highly indeed.

Him and Hatton would have been a great, great fight. So too would a fight between Hatton and Micky Ward.

My first ever part-time job was about 12 years ago in a Newsagents in Woolton, I used to see him now & again & his little lads all the time (probably not so little now!). Dead nice fella & cracking lads.

I agree about his fights being televised too late, I believe he only made about 300k all in all, which, by the time you've bought a house etc, doesn't amount to much. Shame really cos the fella was a warrior. I believe he worked on the Railways for a bit before he opened his gym.

John Conteh and Paul Hodkinson Liverpool fighters were more memorable to me but Shea Neary put on some good displays, never saw much more of him though.

My old fella trained him along with George Schofield for his first few fights. I remember asking him what Neary was like. His exact words were "He's a fucking hard man"

Apparently after a few jobs in Liverpool he had to pack up work due to a problem with his knee, 4 operations and a rebuild. He'smarried with 4 kids and 3 grandkids.
Great puncher!!

The reception he got at Goodison when he came on the pitch with the WBU Belt was absolutely immense.

I know it's an organisation that gets shit on (and rightly so), but I'll always think of him as our World Champion.

I remember that. Hopefully it won't be too long before Tony Bellew is showing off a world title on the hallowed turf!
