View Full Version : BBC Sports Personality of the year

I believe there are only 2 contenders Jenson Button or David Haye.
Lewis Hamilton in his first season when he was 2nd in the F1 World Championship was beaten by Calzaghe, and when he won the Championship he was beaten by a cyclist. Is Jenson Button more worthy?
Think of the personality of Haye first before his achievement. He has got everyone talking about boxing. My old mum said to me yesterday "I bet you are watching that boy fight that Goliath tonight?"
He got under the skin of both Klitchko's just like Ali did to Liston and Foreman.
It is no no brainer for me - Haye for Sport Personality of the year. Our sport 2 years out of 3, not bad for a sport which does not get its share of TV coverage.

No offence but if you had to Google Ennis then you can't watch a great deal of sport.
She's a world champion, attractive and (most importantly) her achievements were televised on the BBC so they'll have all the highlight footage they want when it comes to the lead up to the program. What will they show of Haye?

I think Jessica Ennis has achieved way more than anybody else this year.
Don't get me started on Jenson Button - 80% of F1 is being in the right car IMO. I remember when Mika Salo stepped in to drive a bit for Ferrari a few years back, and went from near the back of the grid to finishing in the points straight away.
That said, he did do well to win the title, of course.

She won the heptathlon gold medal at the world championships. Well, she didn't just win it...... she completely shredded the field.
It was like Daley Thompson in 1980 & 84, when all he had to do was finish the 1500m and the gold was his - except the women run 800m.

Ennis for me.
F1 is as much about the car as it is about the driver, hence why even drivers admit F1 is a team sport and Haye only beat the weakest world champion in his division. If he had beaten a Klitschko then maybe he might have deserved it.
One of my favourite decathletes was Dean Macey...!
I loved Macey. Pity he was crippled by injuries.

I think by nature she is pretty shy.

it might be my bias but,i have always thought any able bodied man could box or run and jump irrespective of what background you come from or how much money your family has.
its different in motor-sports,people from poorer backgrounds or poorer countries are excluded.the f1 isn't a world championship really, just better than other people with the money to take part.ditto show jumping, although it hasn't stopped princess horse and her pony daughter winning SPOTY.

I don't see him as a personality though...... it's tough to identify with someone who has been a laughing stock for pretty much all his career, before falling on his feet with Ross Braun.
Certainly harder than it is to do so with someone like Ennis - working class girl from working class family, athletes have to absolutely flog themselves to even make it to the big events, never mind win them.
That said, Button is more personable than Lewis Hamilton, who for some reason I simply cannot stand, at all.

You really need me to answer that? :nut
The guy was paid millions of pounds early in his career, hyped up as the next big thing - yet did fuck all until recently.
Look, I'm not taking anything away from him winning the world championship, but to me (and others it seems) you can be the best driver in the world but if the car isn't the best you will be lucky to get in the points.
I kinda lost interest in it when they changed the rules to make it harder for Schumacher to whup everyone :-(

Phil Taylor will get overlooked again. You might not class darts as a sport but what he has achieved is unparalleled. I dont think any boxer deserves it this year. Certainly not Froch anyway, if Haye gets a couple of good wins next year then he might be up for it. Probably be someone in the Ashes team although I wouldnt mind seeing Button win it.

We all know this has nothing to do with personality . . .Nigel Mansell won it FFS. It's based on acheivement and since it is voted for by the public generally comes down to who got the most exposure whilst they did something special (making it seem even more special)(Although this doesn't really explain that royal horse woman that won!)
I think it will be a battle between Button and Haye. Normally the F1 guy would take it imo but Haye has drummed up a lot of publicity so has a good shout.

I don't think the cricket thing really captured the public's imagination much.
For starters it was on Sky, and it wasn't a contest between the world's best two teams like it was in 2005. Australia were still #1 but had lost at home to SA (before beating them in SA) and England lost to West Indies in the winter.
It was the worst Aussie team to come over since 1985.... and they only had one genuine superstar in Ponting.... rather than seven or eight as in 2005.

Agree it wasn't any where near as captivating (or special in terms of acheivement) as 2005 but I also wonder exactly who it is that votes for these things. . . .
Won't be having any money on the result that's for sure.

F1 is a lot to do with the driver. Look what Schumacher did at ferrari.. alonso at renault.
The feedback from the driver to the techs and the setting up of the car is very important. Button has essentially been with BAR/Brawn for YEARS developing with each other and they reaped their rewards.
that car was a BAR with a mercedes engine stuffed in it for christs sake!
