Matthew Hatton (37-4-1, 14KOs) plans to step away from his older brother's shadow on Friday night in Stoke. In the main event of a card promoted by older brother Ricky Hatton, Matthew plans to make a name for himself by beating IBO welterweight champion Lovemore Ndou. Matthew has been training ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=23370#) under Lee Beard for the last 18 months. He says the best thing that he did for his own career was to dump former trainer Billy Graham and hire Beard.
“When you look at my record I’ve had four defeats,” Matthew told the Times Online. “but I only feel I’ve been legitimately beaten once and that was against Craig Watson last year. I don’t blame anyone but myself for that but I wasted a lot of years training with Ricky at Billy Graham’s gym ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=23370#). I enjoyed training with Ricky but Billy was doing nothing with me. I was almost training myself."
“So after the Watson defeat I thought, ‘I’m going nowhere here. I’ve got to do something for myself now’ and I left the gym and joined Lee Beard. I’ve had four good wins since the move and feel my career is just starting.”
Matthew is a decent underdog in the fight. Most predict the veteran Ndou will be too much for him. But the younger Hatton says the fight will be a coming out party. He plans to make the most of it the opportunity by proving the critics wrong.
“This shot has come out of the blue for me but I have to make the most of it. The last time I looked I was a 4-1 underdog, which is big in boxing ([Only registered and activated users can see links]***********.com/?m=show&id=23370#), but this will be a coming-out party for me. I look at the internet sometimes and you get these armchair critics sat at home in front of their laptops asking, ‘What’s he doing here?’ but I’m not going to let them bother me,” Matthew said.

i know they are business people and it makes financial sense for them to promote this as a 'world title fight'....but as a boxing fan, it sickens me and makes me want to do anything but support him.

I understand your frustration with it, but the IBO is only fractionally under the WBO in my eyes.
I've never saw any real legitimate champion strutting round with the WBU/WBF any of that nonsense, but I have saw RJJ/Wlad/Lennox Lewis/Tarver/Ricky Hatton speak highly of the IBO strap.
It's all down to the personal feelings you have towards the fighter in general I reckon, I had no qualms whatsoever about She Nearys' WBU fights being touted as World Title fights, because I loved the guy & knew he was a great fighter.

Good interview... to be fair there are far too many haters on here. Why? Just because of the route he is taking or because he's getting a shot before it's due?? I don't see Mitchell getting the same abuse for his up an coming fight (If ****** isn't talking pish).... although many would argue he's jumped the queue
I'll be cheering on Matthew, as I would any domestic fighter plying his trade.
I expect Billy Graham will be glad to see the back of the Hatton family though

I think what he has said about Billy Graham is really out of order, for starters.

But probably true. That was still Matthews decision to stay their under those circumstances though.

Which username is he then? Betty? Bet it's Beeston with some reverse psychology on his band of haters:lol:. I don't personally hate the guy, I just find it frustrating that he's not even bothered trying to prove himself on the domestic scene. He has also, undeniably, used his brothers' success as a platform for his own. He didn't have to train with Graham, but did. He didn't have to fight on near enough every big brother Hatton's fight undercrads, but did. If he tried to actually establish himself properly, he'd get much more respect off of these 'armchair fans'.
On that note, him saying that proves he's incapable of dealing with criticism. I hate it when boxers pull that shit anyway; we're lining your pockets and you hardly ever hear rugby or cricket players weaseling out of criticism by saying 'well, you don't play my sport so I can discount your opinion'. Grow up, you jumped up little prat and prove us wrong:good.

It is a bit rich for MH to point to the 'armchair critics' as if he's been unfairly treated. We all know he wouldn't have this opportunity without the surname he carries round. Not suggesting he's the only one to have ever benefitted from something like this (in or out of boxing) but just be grateful for the opportunity don't whinge!
I hear what you say about the IBO belt being almost as legit as the WBO Hit me Harder but I'm of the opinion that it only adds value once a fighter has won a 'real' belt first. To claim you're a world champ having only ever won the IBO belt is sickening. Imo the IBO belt helps in determining the linear champ but can't be considered on it's own without any other titles behind the fighter.
I'll be behind Hatton in this fight, as I am most UK based fighters in international bouts, but really hope we don't hear too much about the 'world title' that is at stake.

He can say what he likes but he has done absolutely nothing to deserve a crack at a title, even a shit one like the IBO.

I was beginning to rate the IBO as not far off the main 4 - until this!
Seriously though good look to Hatton i'm sure he's a nice lad and has improved a lot i'd say BUT i'd just rather see him go the domestic route, this will make him more money though.

I have a feeling you're on your own there. A few lads on here have met him and they all seem to agree that he's a total knobhead.

the Interim Intercontinental IBO is exactly where he belongs.
Fixed :good
He is a Commonwealth level fighter, nobody knows that more than the man himself.
Having not yet beaten a top 5 domestic welter, to start calling yourself ''world champion'' - should he win of course - is a bit ridiculous.

Why all the hate for Matthew Hatton?
I've only met the fella briefly but he was perfectly nice and stopped to chat when I met him.
Agreed he's no world beater, but the stick he gets on here is ridiculous!!
I for one will be happy if he beats Ndou. Do I expect him to? No. Will I call him a world champion? No. But I'm happy for any British fighter that steps through ropes to do well.

He is fighting on the world title stage. He does not need those guys. They should come back when they have won a belt. Pretty sure the WBF and WBU belt holders are up for a challenge from our top welters.

At least the undercard is good

My thoughts, the lads a cock. But thats personal. As far as tomorrow night goes,I see this as a winable fight far him, via the long route. In a dull, close fight. The joke is, there are at least 3 fights in the central area that I would'nt give him a chance in hell of winning.

I've always found him to be a nice chap and he comes across as very appreciative of the oppertunities he's recieved. That said he isn't a bad fighter at all and has some decent wins. Is he a world champion? No chance but beating the likes of Ted Bami etc doesn't happen by accident.
I know you had a personal problem with him Blue, but that seems very out of character.

We can do our part by not mentioning these crappy belts at all. As far as we're concerned, this is an intriguing 12 round contest, nothing more. I know The Ring takes some stick on here, but would people agree their approach to the alphabets is a good one, i.e. only mentioning the big three?

he's definitely improved over the past 18 months ago. a few year ago you wouldnt have given him the slightest chance against guys like bami and tackie, even if they were both past their best.
hopefully we'll see a watson rematch at some point. would still back watson though.

i dont have a problem with matthew hatton, hes a decent domestic level fighter but why the billy graham dig?pretty fucking classless considering watson clearly outclassed him due to being a much better fighter, eddie futch coulda trained hatton for the fight & it'd have been exactly the same.

it's the champion that makes the belt. and ibo in the last few years has had a great run of high profile fights.
also it's low fees, computer ranking system, no forced mandatory's make it a very versatile belt. making fighters who want to fight the top dogs without any repercussion ala casamayor and the WBC, rochigianni and the WBC, IBF ranking scandal, wbo's affiliation. but if a guy who wins it isnt agressivly seeking competition then he can be protected. also it doesnt draw the big fights unless the fighter is doing it himself. joyi is possibly the most well rounded fighter at 105 yet he literelly cant get a fight ouside of south africa. same with hlatshwayo (<is that right?)

I think on balance, yes, its a good thing. The only niggling doubt I have is that the Ring is supposed to report on fights, the circumstances behind/ surrounding them and spurious titles could be said to be part of that deal.
