It isn't some "Russian ice fighting" or whatever strange theories you've heard; it comes from combat sambo. The point of sambo is to throw the guy to the ground (simplisticly stated), the point of combat sambo is to be able to do this with punches involved.

So what he throws an overhand right, he is providing two options, land it, or set up grip for a trip/throw.Alternately, when he grabs for a grip for a throw he has two goals, get the grip, or create distance for a punch. Dan Henderson made a career out of it as well. Pulver did a good job of it in his early career, although it looked much different.

Throwing the overhand right to set up the trip.

Grabbing an overhook for a trip, missing it, but creating an opening for an overhand right:

He is not swinging wildly for its own sake; he is a Sambo fighter first and foremost he wants the throw! If he lands the punch, specfuckintacular, but it is just a bonus.

I always laugh at people who rag on fedor for having "sloppy" striking, it works for MMA and thats all that matters

Fedor's striking also appears to be "sloppy' because he really puts his hips into his shots and swings to kill. He fully commits. Look at that right hand in the gif above, his chin is tucked behind his right shoulder, his hips swivel, his back foot pivots and the punch comes right down the pipe with cruel intentions and very quickly. Afterwards he is balanced and in position to toss a man like 30lbs heavier then him like a rag doll. Someone throwing sloppy strikes does not leave themselves in a position to do that...end of story.

Good Post Beebs

Very good thread, Beebs; as you can tell by the number of responses. Quality threads/posts often have less room for argument. Crap threads/posts sometimes get far more play.

You made a case, and followed with clear examples. Good job.

Do we have an avatar bet concerning Hughes and Renzo Gracie, or what?

Im into boxing primarily and i see what they mean about sloppy hands but thats irrelevant since they are fucking effective! . Especially when he managed to deal with cro cop in the standup.

People always look at shit too simplisic. Just because he dosent throw strait punches doesent mean shit. Hes got the footwork, timing and accuracy to land em, combined with some head movement when coming in and they are fucking bombs. More than enough to knock the shit out of just about anybody.

Even if someone does hit him he dosent seem to feel it. He has only been stunned 1 time from what ive seen
