Thought I'd see who my fellow classic forum members preferred between these two.
A week ago I would've said Lampley by a small margin, but after Dawson/Johnson 2 this past saturday, I'm not feeling it. Lampley's nuthugging of Dawson made me sick.
As far as Bernstein, he always seemed like he truly loves boxing, not just for a paycheck. Just my observation. He may have not been the biggest Duran fan (one of my favorites) but at least he made some good points.
Anyways, I go Bernstein, until he gives me a reason not to......thoughts???????

I like BOTH "Lamps & Bernie"............... I'd be cool with them two guys working with the going senile Lawrence Merchant on HBO, but political correctness will not go for it in 2009.............. We gotta have a "Other Than White" person working in the mix now for political satisfaction............... I say: "BULLSHIT TO THAT!" Just go ahead and hire the BEST guys for the job and see where that leads to............ Let it come naturally instead of hand-picking people for paper-work needs.............

Bernstein is a smooth announcer who can do play by play and color commentary. Lamps knows the sport very well, and might be able to lend more drama to what's taking place in the ring, but in terms of versatility I'd give the edge to Bernstein.

Lampley is just a clown. While Bernstein is far from perfect, he at least comes up with good insight now and then, which Lampley seems completely incapable of.

Bernstein is more of a true boxing fan and follower of boxing who only has interest in calling the fights, while Jim Lampley is a well rounded seasoned sports announcer who can adjust and even call queer / women sports like Tennis and make it sound exciting......
I too, prefer Bernstein cuz he and I only concentrate on the fight game.........
I also like pro football, but that's in a distant 2nd place on my hit list.......
Baseball is in at # 3....... But only late in the season....... Opening day means NOTHING to me.....
Basketball----SUCKS!!! I hate that shit............ Too much fouling and delaying the game bullshit..........
Hockey?? I'll pass..... But the film "Slapshot" is killer...........
Golf?? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!

No better dramtic blow by blow announcer than Lampley in my opinion. Emanuel Steward and whoever else is with them, Lennox Lewis, Max Kellerman who whoever is supposed to provide the boxing insight from a technical standpoint. Bernstein is a knowledgeable boxing guy, but his position at Showtime fills two spots that you get from HBO which usually carries a three man team. Both are good, but do different things. I prefer the team at HBO over Showtime anyday.

Showtime has ALWAYS been # 2, while HBO is # 1 all the way................... Not even Showtime's ringcard broads can sway me................ HBO generally has the better card / production.............

Fuck all the haters.. I am gonna MISS "Lamps & Merchant" after HBO releases and cans both men in the near future............. Jim and Larry will prolly be all done by 2012.........
Bob Papa, Max Kellerman and a former fighter / trainer will become the 3rd man on the microphone........ That's how my crystal ball see's it coming.........

Lampley is more entertaining, but Bernstein brings better insight. If you're a bigger boxing fan I think you would prefer and appreciate Bernstein. Both have their value, though. The HBO team in general is better, though.

lefthook hit it on the head Lampley is brillaint for increasing the drama and all that and it can in some fights make it interesting but he lacks the ability to go below the surface of the fight he just calls what punches land etc.. he dosent anaylisise it or add his own insight.
Bernstein just loves boxing and calls it how he sees it and goes deep into the fight and anaylises it brillintly. Also what i like about him is he is just a normal guy he has a laugh on the camera between his workmates etc.... Hes my favrouite

Lampley is the better TV persona by a small but clear margin.
Bernstein is the better boxing analyst (by a somewhat larger, clearer margin).
Pretty cut and dry, actually.

Both guys are great for boxing. I think Lampley's a bit better at calling a fight, and Bernstien is a bit better at adding color to the commentary.
If the two could team up, we'd have a real winner.
I respect Bernstien a tad more than Lampley mostly based on Bernstien's intellectual honesty. Al's not a cheerleader. While I'm on the topic, I think Steve Farhood is excellent as well.

Lampley is a play by play, or blow by blow, commentator. Bernstein is a color commentator. Bernstein has worked a lot with the color commentator that preceded Lampley at HBO, Barry Tompkins.
Merchant is a color commentator.
I guess I like Lampley more as a blow by blow announcer than I do the color commentary of Al Bernstein.

Bernstein has more insight, Lampley is more exciting/entertaining. I personally prefer Lampley, but I like Bernsten too.

Bernstein, can't stand the cunt, not as bad as he was 20 years ago when all he wanted to here was his own winneeee voice, the prick just would'nt shut it, it's obviously different for yanks as they've always had this sort of jockeying for prominence when 2/3 are at play covering a fight, here in the UK our commentaters were all old school radio trained/journo's & just spoke the fight as it went & never an ego was heard, i used to find bernstein far to "cliche" he's inside/he's outside, now he's lefty & now he's righty, that sort of fuckin crap.
You want to here what a great fight commentator is all about just go listen to the (Late) Reg Gutteridge commentary on the Hagler/Hearns fight, ABSOLUTLY FUCKIN AWESOME then go listen to the shit version from Bernstien & Co. Even all the yank journo's hail it as a masterpiece, as Reg once said when he 1st called live fight for TV, the customers have got bloody eyes & they did'nt pay to listen to me yapping for 3 minutes a round, go tell that to Berstein & Co & please nobody mention that cunt Percheco "The Fright Doctor"

I like both guys but I know what you're saying about Lampley. The whole HBO crew was in bad shape for the Dawson/Johnson card I thought. But it happens. I still prefer HBO broadcasts really but I noticed a lot of ESBers were flat out disgusted with them this past week. Bernstein does strike me as a guy who just knows the sport more deeply than Lampley. Lampley knows a bit but he's not there as the boxing brains and I don't think he pretends to be.

Lampley is a good sports guy for the Olympics and everything like Bob Costas, but Bernstein is a real boxing guy who knows the sports. I would pick Bernstein anyday-all the time. But HBO needs the guy like Lampley who brings in the non-boxing fans.

Lampley is basically a voice.
Bernstein is an analyst.
I don't think they are very comparable.

Bernstein all the way. Lampley never had the right style for boxing. he sounds like a USC student of journalism. He's better suited for upper class white sports like the triathalon and the Olympics
kellerman is just some kid fanatic without any education and it shows.
merchant has been at the job too long, I think since 76. It's time for him to take a bow
Barry Tompkins was okay as was Tim Ryan, two intelligent and likable gentlemen
I personally preferred more the style of Ref Mercante as a guest color who knew the game, who could spot what was going on with a fighter that casual observers might not catch

Bernstein by a mile, definately. Lampley is an HBO shill and most annoying of all he simply never shuts the fuck up and let the action speak for itself, he is always, ALWAYS blabbering on and on about something, the guy is fucking terrible as a boxing commentator.

Agreed 100%.
Plus he knows nothing about the subtitles of the sport, and seems to have picked up no knowledge whatsoever along the way. In fact, I'd say he's actually gotten stupider as time has gone on.
