What are your thoughts on Jawaid Khaliq? How good do you think he was, how good could he have been given the correct promotion. In comparison to the british champions and the up and coming stars in Britain today how does he rate? Thoughts...

Called out by the late Vernon Forrest and Sugar Shane Mosley, surely a great talent which felt the wrath of boxing promotion?

He is a top guy, I really think he could have been so much more, maybe not Hatton and Calzaghe's standard, but near enough, probably Witter. And boring...the Bergman fight was far from boring wasn't it? His second pro fight he was well behind on scorecards only to KO his opponent! Need more characters like this in British boxing, although I think we are going in the right direction.

Was wasted on his IBO belt, and Sky-TV eventually got bored with his routine defences (seven of them) and Khaliq just drifted from the scene without ever losng his trouser belt. He did feature, though, in a five-knockdown mini-classic with Jan Bergman in South African in one defence.
Khaliq, a cabbie, was awarded an MBE for services to boxing and was the first fighter of Asian descent to win a Commonwealth crown. His only setback in 25 outings came to European welterweight champion Frederic Klose of France.
As I say, he was a wasted talent.

He could have been a serious contender on the domestic scene but never had the talent or bottle to win at that level.

He had bottle but - you're right - he should have taken on Harry Dhami for the British welterweight title. Khaliq is of ****stani origin and Dhami of Indian descent. It was a 'natural'.

What I saw of him suggested nice accuracy but a rather porous defence.
Just short of world level, shame he couldn't achieve more.

Thought he was incredably over-rated to be honest... Couldn't be less bothered when he retired.

I can remember seeing him fight once, not sure who against but he looked very decent but nothing happened for him.

He was decent domestic level, with some flashy moves. There was talk of a Forrest fight but I think Khaliq got beat; and it was probably a little fanciful anyway.

It was vernon forrest who called him out live on sky sports, so it was far from fancifull, shame it didnt come about, his wars with takaloo and bergman are legendary to anybody who's seen them.

I remember it well, I still think it was a PR exercise though. The conversation went, via video link up, "Would you like to fight for my WBC title?", "I'd love to fight for your title" both smiling and laughing.
