They are more into Karate ( movies ). But also, like the East Euros/Russian Asians...they are Communists, so they have no career chance at it. Once they and maybe the Cubans have freedom ( which is unlikely for a while ) will show alot of victories :conf

chinese are good in kung fu and karate. chinese people don't like boxing because they can't use "kicks".

Not quite true mate.

Most Southern Chinese styles emphasize fists, just as most Welsh styles emphasize open palm strikes -fullstop-

Because of their innate docility.

Not necessarily. There's thousands of years of history for contact sports and fighting in China.

I just think that boxing hasn't been promoted as heavily in China as the other major western sports and so, has zero cultural impact over there. The NBA for instance, basketball being predominantly an American sport, has been pushing itself in China for years with talent recruiting, sending teams overseas to play exhibition and preseason games, and endorsements, has become huge in China. I was in China for part of the summer and from observation, basketball has replaced football as the playground sport of choice.

It's probably unfair to compare boxing to the NBA because their structures are so different and each countries' boxing scene seems to run on their own. But I'm sure we're not going to see any major boxing cards in China soon.

Calling Pacquiao Chinese would be more than just calling Cotto Mexican. It would be calling Cotto British. And Injin Chi isn't Chinese either.

Boxing might as well not exist in China. Same with India. Two largest countries in the world aren't even aware that the sport exists, for the most part. China at least sends people to the Olympics in boxing, but there's very little support for the sport in general in China.

Sports just aren't nearly as big in China as they are in most of the West anyway. I was over there less than a month ago, and other than world champions (like that hurdler), table tennis, volleyball and basketball, they really seem to give a rat's behind about sports, at least in the area near Beijing. The Olympics are viewed there as more of a cultural event than a sporting event.

The Chinese are crazy about table tennis (Ping Pong). It's a traditional sport and is the most popular sport in China. China dominates table tennis like Roger Federer dominates Tennis.

As far as boxing. They don't have any boxing tradition, but if they would manage to get one big star in the future then a lot of more fighters would follow.

I could be wrong, but I think that only amateur boxing was allowed in China until recently...if pro boxing was allowed a few years ago, then we could have some major stars coming out of that country in a few years...

Plus over there, the full contact combat sport of choice is likely to be Sanda / San Shou, which is like shootboxing (punches, kicks, and throwing)...

this of course was only based on the couple of holidays I've taken there and the conversations I've had with some of the locals I could be wrong in any of them...

Living in China I also dont really understand it. Of course China is ruled by the communist party, but others than that it is as capitalist as any other contries.

Every sunday morning we have (almost) live coverage of any big fight in Vegas or other places for FREE on CCTV 5. It has been that way for years otherwie you hear nothing about Chinese boxing and see no amateur boxing on the TV. Anyway I think it is because of the sport is as new as it is here. Probably there are 100 very talented fighters in hard training somewhere and I would not be surpriced if China was the 3rd. best boxing nation in the Beijing olympics 2008, after Cuba and the USA.

You are right bro. If this thread made fun of the African Americans instead, a lot of people are crying our racism now. But since we are talking about the Chinese people, no problem to make fun of them. That is what you call double standard.

Btw, taekwondo is from Korea, and not from China.

I know it's a joke, but just want to point out that Tae Kwon Do is Korean.

Martial arts aren't really a competitive sport in China. It's really arts at this point. The main place people learn martial arts in China is training for Beijing Opera.

China could be a power in boxing, just like every other sport, if it wanted to be; the country just chooses not to focus its attention on that sport. Also, it's not like most other countries where a kid can just pick up a sport. The government chooses in what sports an athlete will participate. If boxing isn't on the government's radar, they'll never get good at it.

China does not have a tradition of pro boxing and this will take time to develop. Although not at the forefront of amateur boxing they do have some very good international boxers. The Russians are further down the road but even they have not yet reached anything like their full potential in pro boxing and China will, I am sure soon be producing pro boxers of international standard

Current notable amateurs: -

Light Flyweight World Ranked 1st (3rd p4p)
Zou Shiming World Cahampion/Asian Games Champion

Flyweight World Ranked 13th
Yang Bo

Featherweight World Ranked 19th
Li Yang

Light Welterweight World Ranked 7th
Hu Qing Asian Games Champion

Welterweight World Ranked 7th
Hanati Silamu (CHN)

Superheavyweight World Ranked 18th
Zhang Zhilei (CHN)

To some of the bizarre theory's to explain the blindingly obvious I would like to point out that scientists have determined that white men can't jump, (unless they are Russian).

CHina should have at least one or two good to great boxers, I know they are a Communist country, but so is Cuba and most of the fomer SOviet countries, and those countries had a ton of amatuer talent. Which is eveident, in the number of Eastern European Heavyweight Championss, alot who came up under the Soviet boxing programs. Maybe its CHina's isolation, they have always been separate from the the former U.S.S.R.

I am a danish expat in Beijing. Mainstream sports are, tabletennis, basketball, badminton, volleyball and football (soccer).

However as far as I know Pro boxing is one of the most expensive sports to get the TV rights. And every sunday arround noon we can watch the big fights (HBO, Showtime etc) for free on CCTV 5. That is the Chinese comunist controlled network. So I do not think that chinese are ashamed of boxing at all. I have the feeling that China is the future for boxing but that future is still a little bit distant.

But as I mentioned in an earlier post in next years Olympics here in Beijing you will see some great Chinese boxers as well.:bbb
