Is this when the infamous sparring session happened? It should be around this time.
Do you know anything Scully?

I think he's talking about the time Roy Jones supposidly schooled Sugar Ray Leonard in a sparring session.

Hmmmm....well there are alot of variables there. But it wouldn't completely surprise me.

Apparently he schooled Scully as well from what I heard. I don't put to much stock in rumours though.
Apparently Roy's most exciting fight in the ams was his loss to GMan. Even though Gerald won the fight, he still coudln't spar a month later due to a badly swollen jaw.

I just read that....I am told that was not their only fight though. I wonder which is true.

A friend of mine told me that they went 1-1 as amateurs.

Even if true a younger, naturally bigger Jones troubling an on the slide Leonard is hardly surprising.....

Gerald was there with us for that came but he couldn't spar, he told me himself, because his jaw was still sore from the fight with Roy that took place about 4 weeks earlier. RJ was sparring with myself and Ray Lathon. Sugar Ray was there watching us every day and 1968 Olympic coach Pappy Gault was giving us tips, etc. Ray's brother Roger was helping, to and a guy from Maryland named Ben getty (he used to train Vince Pettway from what I remember). Also...FYI...Roy's dad has the video tape of RJ and Ray sparring and I told him a couple years ago that the video could bring him some real money from collectors online but he seemed to have no interest, though....knowing Big Roy I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know exactly where it was in the house. He has seen everything in RJ's development over the years andeven though fans would SERIOUSLY love seeing it, I think to him the sparring was no big deal at all.

I'd love to see that tape....but sparring is just that. Sparring.

I wish my coach at the time videotaped EVERYTHING and I have no idea why he only got two rounds

I am training some good amateurs plus some solid pros like Matt Godfrey (NABF cruiser champ), former USBA 135 champ Pito Cardona, USBA 122 champ Mike Oliver and former WBA 154 champ Jose Rivera. Doing pretty good. Still sparring as much as I can, too (did 16 rounds about four days ago). Doing good, my man. What about you...where u from??

As for that photo..ibelieve it was at the gym you speak of...but I am honestly not sure... from what Iknow it was the gym that SRL trained at. I mean, Roger was there every day,Ray was there and Pappy Gault was, too.

Ice...being a middle. How do you think you would fair against JT. And do you see him as a talent, or just a good amateur that got glorified into the next best thing.
IceJohnScully
09-24-2007, 10:22 PM
JT is good and truth be told 160 was far from my best weight (BAD troubles making weight back then) so I would not have stepped in at 160 with someone of his caliber.

Aye!! I remember Carr, he was a good domestic level fighter who never made the step up. He looked awesome coming up but never made the big jump.
The Spice Boy is still fighting (or was as of last year!) BTW.
While you're on I've got to ask you.....
Whats your best win?
The best fighter you fought?
SRL, Nice guy?

Nunn and Maske were the best...as amateur it was Darin Allen and Lamar Parks...best win as pro probably Billy Bridges or Art Baylis, Alphonso Bailey maybe (IMO). Sugar Ray and I always got along well.... he's very sociable and cool in private, yes
GazOC
09-24-2007, 10:33 PM
I'm glad you said Art Bayliss, that looks the best win to me as well.
IceJohnScully
09-24-2007, 10:38 PM
Art was one of those guys your momma warned u about LOL much better than his record and DANGEROUS. He owns a DEVASTATING KO over Thadzi who came back later to beat James Toney

Did you come over here as a sparring partner for Otis Grant when he fought Rhodes?
Yes, I was with Otis for three full weeks (we trained at the LYNN A.C. in London) ...only reason I left before the fight was I had to get back to the states for my own fight on ESPN.... while we were there we went and watched another frequent sparring partner of mine,Vinny Paz, in his fight with Bomber.
GazOC
09-24-2007, 10:51 PM
IMHO Paz was never going to beat Graham at 160. He's probably the best British fighter never to win a world title. Great fighter.
IceJohnScully
09-24-2007, 10:52 PM
They fought at 168... and yeah Bomber could REALLY BOX
GazOC
09-24-2007, 10:58 PM
Ah sorry. My mistake.....Paz did well to fight at anything over 154 considering he was a natural Lightweight and not very tall.
I remember him coming to the UK for that fight, he really knew how to work a crowd.

Hey Ice, have you ever met the Macho Man Hector Camacho? If so, what was your experience with him? Did your boy Paz dog him and talk a lot of crap about him outside of the ring.
Nah, Vinny didn't talk bad about Macho. Vinny is much different in person than you might think. I actually met Macho and his wife at the time back in 1994 when he was here looking for sparring. I wanted to work with him but I was too big so I brought two friends of mine to work a few rounds with him. Another time he fought here (against Luis Maysonette) and he came to our gym for a day of public training and to receive the key to the city. He gave interviews and sparred with a kid named Edgardo Vazquez. Like a lot of guys like him who have big public personas I actually found him to be pretty calm and humble in private and away from the cameras.

Gerald and Roy were two of the most talented middleweights that USA had in the 80's and early 90's, We were quite spoiled as far as entertainment value goes...
