View Full Version : Ricky Hatton as an amateur

I think I've read a few times on here people saying Hatton's style might not have been suited for the amateurs. I found this video of him when he must have been 16 or 17 at most; as I believe he turned pro at 18. This is him boxing for his high school. Interesting how the rules are different from the US to the UK; at least back then their gloves didn't have white knuckles on them.
Even then, you can see the shades of the Hatton we have now-look at his body punching and movement.

He actually started off as a kickboxer, but his limbs were to short to go anywhere with it and he went to boxing.

He was a Welterweight back then yet thinks Welter doesn't suit him as a pro.

Hold on. Let me see if I've understood this correctly..................if you're a dippitt American and you say that someone 'ain't shit' it actually means they ARE shit'? Therefore if an American Idiot( I must write a song about that:huh ) says someone IS shit it must mean they're quite good really?
Right, I think I have that!!! I'M SO SHIT IT'S UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!:happy

'Cause he clinches like a bitch.
sometimes he over does it, but his style is pretty exciting....i've seen most of his fights and his clinching only bothered me about 2 times....i guess i'm a loyal fan.....

I don't have Showtime so the 1st time I ever saw him was against Collazo and right then I didn't see what all the hype was about.:confPersonally, I don't think much of him. He's still an elite fighter and all, but there are much better fighters out there IMO. He does all that mauling and clinching to make up for a lack of skill, mostly on the defensive side of things.
for reals....when fools say that mexicans just brawl shows their lack of knowledge.....when i think of mexican fighters, i think of finito, the marquez bros, chavez, mijares, montiel, martin and jose luis castillo, humberto soto etc etc....the closest we come to brawlers right now are margarito and arce, and even they show more skill than fighters like soliman, or mayorga who really are brawlers .....and those fighters i named are as of recent.....we still got some og mexicans that have that same style.......
if you compare their blood and guts style of fighting, then i can agree to some extent, but that blood and guts shit is blown way out of proportion too....any race or ethnicity can have a couple of blood and guts warriors...

Ricky is a great fighter! If the Ricky from the Kostya fight comes in, I recon he can pull off the upset.

Yeah, Mexicans today are some of the most skilled boxers on earth. The old mexican brawler style of fighting can't be used to define our fighters anymore. Shit, the best fighter out there who fights in that style is a fucking Puerto Rican named Miguel Cotto, not a Mexican.
Fighting like a Mexican is more of a mentality anyway. We as a peple are born and raised tough and with a lot pride, so if you punch us in the face, you best believe we're gonna come right back and blast you dead in the mouth. And if we can, we're gonna give you hell for the entire fight win or lose.
It's in our training as well. Go to most all Mexican gyms and you'll see that they usually emphasize skill and technique along with discipline and a lot of conditioning, I know because I used to train in one. I couldn't rest more than 5 seconds without some asshole telling me to get back to work.
i know huh, and there always talking shit (in a good way) making it fun to be in there.....

Word... I always thought a lot of Mexicans were great infighters, but counter-punching infighters, not so much brawlers...
