The guy is a legend was in some of the best british fights of the last 20 years, was a former british, commenwealth, european and world cruserweight champion, holds 2 wins over chris eubank and was the first man to beat david haye. Boxing needs give the fucking CAT more respect

Hard as nails. Quality fights with Eubank, Haye and (especially) Sellers. for what's it worth I think the Haye of a few years later beats prime Thompson.

Great puncher, the division's not deep with greatness in its history so he must rank with the best. The Eubank fights were against a past prime foe, but they were great. The Haye win is a top one, green or no. He was hardly hurt against Nelson either at the time of stoppage. I'd pick Nelson to beat every time though.

Ohnny Nelson=double hard bastard. Had ways of surviving against Heavys and come back from something stupid like losing his first five fights to hold a trinket. Now a decent analyst (well better than Jim Watt anyway) so I say let's give Nelson some kudos :good often a horrible fighter to watch though
Never ever in a dull fight! Carl for me is the most consistenly exciting british fighter of the last 20 years, very underrated.

And you are all forgetting one of his finest moment, when as a very, very late sub he saved Seconds Out and flattened the unbeaten Nicky Piper, to first make his name to the hardcore sports fan.

One thing i always remember about the thompson/sellers fight was how small the crowd was, there must of been about 200 people in some small hall, what a fight it was, one of the best i have seen live i remember watching on friday fight nights, could not believe how good of a scrap it was, shame carl had to lose, cos he was chaseing a nelson rematch at the time

Haha, i've got Nelson's book, he was gutted about that for ages it seems. Like it haunted him or something. When he eventually won a title it was as if it was all to rid him of eing in the shadow of that night.

I read somewhere that Carl did not get massive purses for his title fights which is a real shame if true.

It was partly a case of Piper being well overhyped, and having an ego the size of Wales to step into the ring with Thompson, despite giving away perhaps a stone.
But Carl (in fact I think he was still Adrian) was impressive and controlled and dominated the fight. And when you think The Cat was coming off a bad two round stoppage to another big puncher (Davis), it was more than a good showing, it was an excellent showing, almost world class.
