View Full Version : Which MMA fighter would do best as a pro boxer?

I think most people will say Anderson Silva, but I've saw videos of Silva in a boxing ring, and I have my doubts. I think because he is such an amazing MMA striker (taking kicks and knees into account as well as punches) then it's logical to assume he would be a great boxer too, but I don't think that is necessarily the case.
The MMA fighter I have been most impressed with from a boxing point of view (I exclude Arlovski as I don't think he has the chin for heavyweight boxing) would be BJ Penn, who looks like he has good solid fundamentals and a granite chin.
Anyone agree or disagree about BJ? Any other suggestions? :good

Vitor Belfort along with Penn. GSP to hes such a great athlete and picks everything up so quickly and works his ass off.

My first thought for this thread was Belfort. But BJ's boxing is top notch. With full time training I am sure he could do great.

Marcus Davis could be a low level American boxer.

Id say Penn, his fundamentals are sound.
GSP has some excellent striking as well but I see him as more of a prototype hybrid striker. Although he has an excellent jab.
Footwork wise, I like Silvas movement but again, different delivery of his punches and strikes.
Penn = best candidate

Penn definitely. You can see it in the fluidity of his combos. Also he has a granite chin.

Ohh please dont let the fast hands fool you. Hes like a fastball w/o any movement. He moves and punches one way ..straight!
Hed get battered if he steps up in competition.

not at all.
his first punch in the boxing match was going to be a counter hook. his second was an over hand left. his third was a hook and his fourth an uppercut. infact he threw maybe two or three straight punches.
he spun off the ropes. was offensive, was defensive.
dropped him with a double uppercut, right hook. beauty.
he looked quality. good technique. speed and power. he looked as good as he could in his first boxing match.
vitor is definitely a good boxer.

Lytle or Pulver had they stuck with it; Lytle was going to be on the contender first season but they changed weight classes; Pulver had a respectable record with knockout power and fought on ESPN. Vitor tried to box with the Brazil amateur team and did not do well.
Little Nog, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was Brazilian Amateur HW champ, South American champ, and Pan-American Bronze medalist.
Kharitanov was a bronze(?) medalist in the central Asian championships.
BJ, I think would face problems with his body type, he is kind of short to fight at 154.
Of course there are the estbaloshed pros like Jeremy Williams, but he started with boxing.

people tried hating on the fight afterwards but there is hardly anything else he could. good technique, showed alot in such a short period of time and closed the show.

I dont really think any MMA guy could cut it at the highest level in boxing, they simply dont/didnt have enough time to get that good with their hands because they have to spend time learning the other arts too.
However.... Ive always been impressed with the hand speed of Vitor Belfort, his punches are awesome for MMA or street fighting where he can just swarm all over you & if he connects 1 or 2 & stuns you, you know that means 4 or 5 are on the way in an eye blink & your gone - especially with those fingerless gloves, not a lot of padding on those things.
Belfort`s hands were a gift from God, he just devoted his time to MMA more than boxing is all, he definitely had natural hand speed for sure.

He boxed in the army, he would be suited to inside boxing rather than range.

GSP is just a freak athlete I'm sure there are many sports that if he dedicated his life to them he could become pro in them.

Agreed. He chose to use a style that could close the show rather than box and score. He'd need to show that side of his game.

Lil Nog has had much more success in the same boxing system than Vitor. Lil Nog is a legitimate boxer; south american amateur champion. Vitor would almost certainly lose a boxing match to him.

To answer the question, Bj Penn or Sherk seem to mix up their combinations as well as anyone in the octagon. But no UFC fighter could actually "make it" in Boxing.

I personally don't think Sherk's all that great of a boxer. BJ maybe, depends on what you mean by "making it." If that means top 100 in the world than I'd say no. If it means making a menial living at it, then yes.

I'd say Aldo. When he focuses on that aspect of his game it's very impressive. He knows how to block and roll punches, is quick as a cat on the counter and has a sharp left jab right down the middle. Either way, no MMA fighter would fare too well as a boxer, at least not once they'd stepped up the comp. You can't simply jump into boxing with solid fundamentals (used primarily for setting up other parts of your game) and athleticism and hope to be successful.
