View Full Version : Places to stay in newcastle?

Right so me and a mate are going to the Khan fight on Dec 5 at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle. Does anyone know of any hotels/b&bs to stay for the night? I obviously want it near the arena, but also near the town centre if that's possible (I don't know if the arena's in the city?) but the priority is near the arena. I've tried all the hotels on the metro radio arena website and they're all unavailable so we're sort of fucked right now. I also don't wanna spend ridiculous amounts.
Any help?

I've done my fair share of late hotel bookings on my travels and I have always found this site extremely useful:

One of the best things about Newcastle is that it has such a compact city centre and it has a great Metro service.
The arena is right on the Tyne, and is within walking distance from most of the city centre.
Even if you can't find a hotel in the city centre, places like Jesmond and Gosforth might be worth looking at - only a few Metro stops from the city centre and nice places in and of themselves. Jesmond has its own bar life for a warm up drink, for instance.

Looks like the hotels are well booked up. Figures, I suppose. This looks decent - not sure if the price seems reasonable to you:

Bang in the city centre. You could walk to the arena from this one in no time at all.

Cheers guys. I just booked one called York House Hotel in Whitley Bay. It's apparently about 30mins away from the arena, can anyone confirm this? Seems like a bit of a romantic hotel though, they offered me champagne, wine, flowers and chocolates as extras. Gonna look a couple of poofders coming for a romantic rump in Newcastle :patsch Also, where are the good places to go in Newcastle? No rough places, red light districts or gay bars plz :good

Whitley Bay is connected by the Metro to the city, so it shouldn't take too long to get to the city centre, about 30 mins, yes. The one I mentioned above is extremely close to the arena though, whereas Whitley Bay is miles out on coastline.
As for Newcastle, no doubt you'll have heard of the Bigg Market, which is a slapper festival, so if you're a more discerning gent, the Quayside is supposedly quite classy (although not my scene).
But you can't go wrong, really - if you get bored of one spot, there always something else close by, a few minutes' walk.

Bigg Market looks like my sort of thing, slappers are fine, doesn't matter what they're like on the outside, they're all pink on the inside :thumbsup. Do the geordie girls like southern accents do ya reckon? They better do. :deal
Oh is the metro thingy a 24hr thing? It's not like buses that only run til a certain time is it?
Cheers for the help it's much appreciated :good

Newcastle is a pretty good place to go...... there are loads of cheap B&B's in South Shields, you can get the Metro from there to Newcastle for next to nothing - it's a decent place to have a few beers after the show as well.

I'm a fan of Mitchell's, so obviously I want him to win, but his defence is awful and I can't honestly look past him getting KTFO. He'll go into a war with Prescott which will be good to watch whilst it lasts. Will be good to see the Olympians live and it could be a laugh seeing Enzo too. Obviously it'll probably be the last chance to see Khan before he goes to the States and that's the only reason why I'm going to see him, not really that excited about Salita tbh.

No I think the last Metros are around the 11-12pm mark. Not certain but fairly sure. Might have to get a taxi back to the hotel.

Some good bars near the station- about 5 mins walk from the arena. The Forth, Head of Steam, North, The Telegraph, Tilley's, Bodega. The bars between the station and the arena (near the 'Centre for Life') are all gay bars, BTW.

Whitley Bay is a total shithole, and South Shields ain't up to much. but if you leave early in the morning and head into town it won't be so bad.
The Telegraph is the best place to drink near the station.
However, if the weather is nice I would suggest going to The Bridge Hotel first and then swinging down towards the Quayside stopping off at the legendary Crown Posada. once you hit the riverside start walking up river, once you get underneath the Redheugh bridge (a concrete motorway bridge) go 100ft past that and you'll see an alley with old brick walls and a ton of foliage (it looks like the kind of place a rape happens on crimewatch), but at the top of the lane it spits you out at the front door of the arena. (a little known route to get there)

Oh well coming from the south everything northern is gonna be a shithole anyway :hey I don't intend to hang around in whitley bay for long anyway, I'll get there at about 4pm to check in, hang around the hotel bar and eat, go to the fight then into the city centre til whenever the last bar shuts then get back to the hotel for a sleep, probably put on babestation although my mate will be in the bed next to me which could get awkward :rofl then fuck off home.

That's a good call... Thought that Crolla did what he had to do against a very under par Brodie... I was gutted watching Brodie last night...he is not a touch near to what he was, that Jorrin result galls me even more now as he could have nailed some decent paydays.
I think that is Crolla's level, English title maybe...I think that if he boxes Sykes again he will get beat again...:bbb

Great spot Newcastle. Great for a drink. Plenty of women in it and they're a friendly enough bunch. Same as all cities, if you look for trouble you'll find it. Whitley Bay is a good spot too. If you have time, get a taxi to Marsdens Grotto. Its a bar kinda on a beach and built in a cave. mind you, i aint been in the bar in 15yrs so with global warming and shit, its probabley 2kms under the north sea

Bigg market's a bit of a dive mate. Newcastle's definitley got more to offer. It's also the worst place to be if you're trying to avoid trouble.
There's some good places around central station but they're a complete mix in style. If you're looking for a good cheap beer try the Union Rooms (wetherspoons) or Head of Steam. Revolution or the Long bar can be good options, one or two drinks in, if you're looking for nice normal women (although a bit hit and miss on that front) and then Tokyo, Perdu and Baby Lynch are kind of trendy bars which fill up later on.
If you're after easy women try the Sports Cafe (just up from Central Station), Mushroom (top of the Bigg market - it's also dirt cheap in here), Mood (in the Gate - up the street from the Big Market) or Sam Jack's (outside the Gate).
. . . and a little tip - don't wind up the larger women up there unless your defence is water tight. Seen many a man dropped by a fatty in a kebab shop after 3 o'clock

The sound system, in that place is ridiculous!
Used to go up the gate a fair bit mid week and never failed to land in that place if I was looking. Granted it's not quite as easy as walking up behind some rough bird in the bigg market (Flares, Yell, etc.) and grabbing her arse but then you've got just as much chance of being knocked out doing that as you have of pulling. :rofl

Apart from the Dog and Parrot, which is a great bar. Good list of bars though- the bigg market and quayside are the shit places to go out in Newcastle, that these are good places to go out is a common misconception about Newcastle :verysad

We always had a few beers in Players Bar, was up one weekend for Newcastle vs Sunderland game, place was rammed but was like a nightclub atmosphere at 5pm!
Bigg Market is pretty rough, I didn't think much of Quayside, was dead last time we were there.
I can't remember half of names of some places to be honest, its far better than Leeds for a night out, IMO.

Yeah some good opportunities in Players.
Quayside used to be good but it's gone down hil over the last few years. Tends to be just the older people that drink there now (apart from one or two places, like the Quayside bar which isn't bad)
The bars in Newcastle beat any where I've been in the UK but the clubs aren't the best. Never been out in Leeds.

Thanks a lot, the Gate looks and sounds ideal for me. Went on that pub newcastle website and the bars seem pretty decent and the easy women is always good just hope they're not rotten looking or walrusses. Is The Gate near central station then because there's quite a few nice looking places around there too? I'm planning all this like a pro but you know when I get there I'll go to some cheap pub have a few and just wonder around the place like a dick just going in anywhere and eventually falling asleep on a park bench. Which reminds me to ask, where is the gate distance wise from whitely bay? And do you reckon I should pre book a taxi because where I'm from there's never a taxi available.

Newcastle is a fairly compact city, The Gate isn't where I go (usually filled with charvas*) It's a 5-10 minute walk Once you leave the main enterance of Central station, go up the road next to a large Starbucks keep going until you come to a crossroads (on the corners are a Greggs, KFC, Pizza Hut and Boots) turn left at boots and the Gate is straight ahead of you.
Behinde the Gate is the legendary Stowell Street (aka Chinatown so you can get fed at a reasonable price) although THe Gate has a nandos and a few other places

There are taxi ranks outside all of the busy spots (the gate, bigg market, central station and the quayside). You might wait 15 minutes in a queue but probably beats having to be at a certain place at a certain time for a cab.
Have a good one mate
