This guy seems to have been forgotten, overlooked and sadly underrated. Fought in a bustling era, met and beat some of the greatest fighters of the era, Walcott, Griffo, Burge, Erne... Up until the 1940's he was still in the argument as to who was the greatest lightweight ever. Now, I rarely hear him mentioned.

Thoughts?

Definitely a forgetten great.

Lavigne's misfortune was to come allong just before a quantum leap in the level of documentation of fights took place.

This means that his career was largley undocumented while those of fighters who came just after like Joe Walcott were documented in full.

1979 Ring Mag article Duran vs all time greats, Cus Damato mentions this guy right off the bat favoring him over Duran.

I am minded to think that any lightweight in history would have had his hands full with this guy.

One of the greatest fighters of his era.
Perhaps somewhat overlooked at times, as are his peers Jack McAuliffe and Young Griffo, two of the greatest of all-times.

That trio are in the lightweight heirarchy.

A former bareknuckle boy,its nice to see him getting some attention, he must have been a tough SOB.

Barbados Joe Walcott ripped his ear clear of the side of his head and he still went on to win the fight.

That trio are in the lightweight heirarchy.Would Griffo not be better suited to ranking alongside the great Featherweights?

Would Griffo not be better suited to ranking alongside the great Featherweights?

He would but he was in discussions about who was the greatest lightweight as late as the 1930s and 40s.

bump

seems a pretty brutal finisher and puncher but not the most refined in terms of pressure (i.e running into the ring post)
