heard this is being touted for feb in the echo arena but i dont think it will be a good fight for the fans i dont reckon dodson is at the standard of smith and would have him out of there in 4 rounds id of rather seen him get it on with tony quigley again heard a few rumours that quigleys stepping down to middleweight now because he never got the rematch

i hope in feb on the bill they have more or less the same fighters such as ste and liam smith bellew selkirk ect....

Dodson aint in the class of Smith? Your kidding right?

And Quig should drop down cause Smith aint gonna give him a rematch cause he is too dodgy a defence, plus Quig is a bit of a porker and could do with dropping the weight and stirring things up.

i dont think dodson is to be honest and reckon smith would have him out in about 4/5 rounds dodsons been inactive since the quigley fight last march that will be 11 months out of the ring unlike smith whos been fighting regulary

Smith would have to pull out some power he not really shown consistently at super middle against a tough opponent in Dodson. I agree about the inactivity but Smith will have to fight a lot better then last time to stop him.

Harsh that there Decy, I dont think its a bad call :rofl

On a serious note though. Smith wants to be thanking his lucky stars he has ****** on his side. That fight with Quigley (Even though I had Smith up by 1) could have easily gone to Quigley which speaks volumes about Smith considering it was a cagefighters 17 fight across the corner !

British is his maximum level. He needs to fight a complete BUM in order to bring back anything higher than the Lonsdale. Not saying the Lonsdale is anything to be ashamed of - I'd give my left arm to have won it - but when the words Paul Smith + World Title are put in the same sentence somebody needs a word with themselves

Dodson would be a hard fight (by the way it wont happen), but i think Smith would beat him, and has another level or two to go up from british level imo.
Didn't fight great against quigley, but i had him 2 up going into the final round.
Not a lot of love for paul here currently.
I can understand where the opinions are coming from, as some (and only some) performances have been slightly lacklustre. But Paul merits his british title currently.
I reckon, if he shows he is good enough to win the lonsdale outright, by beating the best british opposition out there, and he gets to fight at euro level, then people should start giving him his dues.
I feel he can acheive this.
Smigga v Dodson = smigga late stoppage

Paul Smith defends his newly won British super-middleweight title in an all-Liverpool encounter with Tony Dodson in February.
Smith won the title with a split decision over Tony Quigley in another Scouse derby in Liverpool last month – the same Quigley who had stopped Dodson in the 12th and last round of a thriller seven months earlier, so one would presume Smith holds an obvious edge going into this. Styles make fights, however, and Smith did not convince against Quigley, in a disappointing affair, whereas Dodson took Quigley to the well before his own well ran dry.
Smith has failed to push on since appearing on Contender III in the States in 2007, where injuries essentially ruled him out of the series after one winning contest. In those days Paul looked like one of the brightest prospects in Britain but then came a shock setback at the hands of grizzled Coventry southpaw Steve Bendall last year. Clever matchmaking since and big promotional backing brought him back but, despite his British title, little else about the 27-year-old today suggests he will develop into a world class pro, although he biffs heavily to the body and brings undoubted strength to every fight.
The same could be argued of Dodson, of course, who lost in three rounds to Carl Froch when he stepped up back in 2006 (from a body shot, which will interest Team Smith) and is now pushing 30, a pro since 1999. However, Dodson, a former holder of the British belt, is probably at the same level as Smith. This gives him a real shout and guarantees a cracking match in which the younger, fresher Smith has the strength and stamina to ultimately prevail.

If the Dodson that fought Quigley shows up for this one then it's Dodson UD for me. Have to see how much Dodson has got left though after all the time out.

Alot of disrespect here for Smith. Seems a little harsh. I wanted Quigley to beat him last time out, but I had Smith two up overall. Could have easily gone either way, but the lad won the belt and deserves a bit of respect.

Doesnt Magee want to fight for this belt again? I know he's going for the EBU in Jan, but surely he's front of the queue after that? More money in a Brit title than a vacant European I would have though?

That sounds great I checked out the list of candidates for the commonwealth recently and Tony wasn't on the Light Heavies list of contenders but JJ Ojuderie was :blood I hope that doesn't stand in his way of getting a shot at the vacant title but I would be extremely shocked if he was denied a shot.
If Frank is brave a good move would be to put Tony in with the Aussie Tim Bell he is ranked in the top 15 for the WBA and is on the list of contenders, he has experience but most importantly is clearly beatable with a record of 17-5 he would prove a stiff test for Bomber and in my mind would be the perfect opponent make it happen Frank.

Probably he won't exactly be close to a world title shot if he wins the title, with two of the titles (most importantly the WBC) being tied into the super six and one held in North America where he isn't known I would say he will still have quite a lot of work to before he gets a shot at the title and a fight with the winner of Smith-Dodson would do decent money.

No disrespect intended Tony but if you read the whole comment you would retract your statement. My opinion is that the last fight took alot out of you fella, thats just an opinion by someone who has followed this sport for 20plus years it was a war, you are a Warrior. You have had a great career and been a worthy Champ. Maybe 'washed up' is a tad harsh, maybe the wrong term, but as I said, at your peak you vs Smith would be a non contest, you would break him. Also if you read the last sentence I said that if you fancied it you would take Smith. But lets be honest boxing is all about timing. Im im not a hater mate, Im actually a fan. Good Luck to you.

Yeah, you're missing something. Capturing the WBO SMW Title is not equivalent to beating Ali at this moment in time, and Smith is next in line for a shot by the looks of it. I think it could be a split points decision. Miranda can bang, and i would give him a knockout shot against any SMW in the world.
I have said before that i think if smith consolidates at domestic level, wins the lonsdale outright, and then fights for a euro, to sort of bed in fighting at championship distance, i can see him making a much more worhtwhile challenge at world level.
Don't get me wrong, i give him much more than a punchers chance, i just think it could be wrong for him at this moment in time

Your mate won a dubious decision against David Banks who was owned by the one and only Peter Manfredo and was knocked out by Miranda in probably the best ko I have seen, Smith is dog shit he has beat no one, he won a skinny decision against Quigley who was totally showed up by a novice Nathen Cleverly, Beaton by Bendall who falls short of British class. Your mate got beat by Bendall ffs,and you think he outpoints stieglitz :patsch

You need to take them Smith tinted glasses off mate.

whatever, we have all got our opinions, and that is yours, and this is mine.
Just because someone does something to a fighter that someone else didn't doesn't mean fuck all.
Quigley was beaten by cleverly at LW, which he should never been fighting at. Can't defend the bendall decision, although, everyone journo, and ringsider said it was a wank decision.
Who said anything about him being a mate? I don't know him personally, and have never met him. I just see something in him that some don't.
Comes across well, HAS got skills, decent power and does want to challenge at a higher level.
You say about banks, being a dubious decision, and manfredo owning banks. That means fuck all Smith won and so did manfredo, albeit by different methods.
Smigga all the way! fuck the haters!

i reckon smith has the tools to beat dodson, but will he use them?? i dont know!! a few years ago i would have said dodson has this in the bag, but one things for sure... dodsons gonna make it a fight!!! no excuses for smith this time, he needs to win and win outright!!! :pop

from what i hear, my mate knows tony dodson and hes said that dodson has dropped smigga a few times in sparring!!! so based on this info, i think either smigga late stopage or dodson early stoppage!!!

fucking brilliant. can't wait for it. Dodson think he has got this one in the bag already, he is going to get a shock

Fully agree mate, Smith usually fights to the level of the opposition (which he shouldnt do but he does) and i think he will win this one.

It will be a good fight, i enjoyed the Quigley fight live, but i can undertsand why people didnt enjoy it as much on TV as they didnt get the atmosphere and it was sloppy in spots but both guys showed tons of heart!

My grammer and English aint the best, but my point was dick head, Smith wouldnt beat Miranda or Stieglitz they are fighting for the strap yes?? Ok there you go. Smith is fucking wank wank wank wank, he struggles to beat the likes of Banks and Quigley ffs.

If you think Smith outpoints Stieglitz you need help he couldnt even outpoint local binman Bendall :patsch

And Haye couldn't even beat Carl Thompson so he's got no chance of...

Oh wait. Your logic is fucked mate.

Tony,

I have heard that you helped Smith out in the past with sparring but when you have asked for a favour in return he had blanked you!! Is this true, if so why do you think he refused to help you when you were more than willing??

By the way mate good luck .................... AND THE NEW!!!!!!!!!

Stupid question to some, but not to me, in fact, very important.

Is Tony Dodson an Evertonian? I have no idea why I do not already know this.

I know his cousin Kev used to play for Everton (watched him boss the midfield in back-to-back games, Chelsea then Arsenal, so much potential back then) was at Swansea last I heard.

I'm backing Tony anyway, but just need to be 100% he won't be walking out to You'll Never Walk Alone.

Smith showed in his last fight that he is over-rated i.m.o.
smith is overrated! he said he couldnt get up for his last fight!!! who does he think he is? the lonsdale belt is a great title held in the past by fighters like randolph turpin, henry cooper, lennox lewis and joe calzaghe so who the fuck is the real gone kid to say he could get up for the brittish title.

Not really mate bit of a shit expample that Carl Thompson was a world class operator in his day even though he was an old man he was once a very decent fighter who could bang.

Remind me what world titles and who has Bendall beat again??

Nice one Bomber! :good

I remember McLoud, he looked a decent prospect but like you said just didn't get much of a chance - one of the best players in the rezzies around that time. Went off to QPR and then ended up playing with Lee Trundle at Swansea, not sure where he is these days though.

Used to see him at away games in the Everton end after he'd left, always seemed a top lad. Had no idea he was Tony Dodson's cousin, suppose you learn something new every day!

Anyway, back to the topic...

I'm looking forward to this one, should make for a much more eye-catching fight than the Smith-Quigley scrap.

Can't wait to see the Echo Arena packed out again. The atmosphere last time was something special, but I'm sure this fight can top that. Hopefully Frank will put another cracking undercard on again. Who knows, the Brook-Jennings title fight may even get re-arranged for the same bill?

Only just saw this comment, yeah Kev McLeod was a cracking prospect, he had a left foot like Sheedy. Unfortunately for him, initially, not only was Walter Smith unsure whether to play him in the centre or on the left, but he was also having to battle it out with fellow young nippers Gazza, Pembridge, Ginola & Mark Hughes for places. Oh yes, Walter was a champion for playing the young lads. Like I mentioned though, saw him play a cracking centre-mid role against Chelsea, think we won 1-0, he looked the bollocks.

Wasn't to be though, upon Walter's sacking & Moyes' appointment, it was thought Kev would get a chance, but he was loaned out to QPR where he did brilliantly well & helped get them to the play-offs, so well in fact that Moyes offered him a new contract in 2003. Kev decided to join QPR permanently though & the rest is history.

Sorry if I sound like bennie (no offence mate) but I'm just overjoyed to know YNWA won't be blasted all over the Echo Arena again.

I have never seen any of the class, quality and power that Smith supposedly posesses. He just looks distinctly average. Dodson on the other hand really impressed me in the Quigley fight and I reckon he'll beat Smith
