I normally don't give a shit about this award, but I find it amazing that boxing isn't good enough to be shown on the beeb, but they are all too willing to jump on a bandwagon if it passes by. I seem to remember JC and Hatton both tying up 1st and 2nd spots a few years back as well.

I might even vote. Pay attention to the public, beeb:twisted:. Hope Buncey mentions the double-standards on his next Boxing Hour.

Thoughts?:good

No chance. For one fight against a dude most acknowledged he would outclass

Button has this locked anyway

 I just saw your post in the Choi thread. You'll have to take my word for it, but I came across the news myself - amazingly I have access to the beeb's website like millions of others. I'm not Rob:deal.

Indeed. I think I might actually vote this year as he has deserved it for some time:good. Steve, you must agree on the beeb's double standards on this issue?

I for one hope Haye wins it, but I will be amazed if Jenson Button doesn't receive the award!

Button
Ennis
Haye

In that order, for me.

Only the Sunday Times and Daily Mail didn't nominate Haye.

Only Sport Magazine, The Voice and the Daily Record nominated Froch.

seriously? he had one fight all year that he "won" against one of worst champs of all time and who only had the belt because of technicalities with the board in Finland. You want the general public to think that abomination of a fight was boxing at its best? If that was the shit, then they might aswell all stick to watch Formula 1 or whatever.

Surprised Froch isnt there... Andy Murray, has he won a grandslam yet?

You know full well that SPOTY is a personality contest and, at this point in time, Haye is big news. That's why he's been nominated.

I haven't watched it in years. I probably won't watch this year's either, but I do appreciate what a Haye win means for boxing in the UK. Even a top 3 finish would be fantastic, IMO. Haye's mainstream recognition is long overdue and he deserves something of this magnitude for what he did at cruiser never mind the win over Valuev.

I'd like to see Cav win it, he really is a phenomenal cyclist. However I'd expect the top 3 to be...

1. Button
2. Ennis
3. Cavendish or Haye

yeah, that and a text vote on the night i think it is.

I think we should all go batshit and vote for Haye on the night. I mean Calzaghe and Hatton both came in the top 3 two years back, so there's a fanbase there that will vote.

Joe Calzaghe, in no shape or form, ever won a personality contest.

I read it as a contest for sports personalities i.e. somebody associated with sport, the same way a TV personality is somebody who appears on TV. They could be as dry as sandpaper but they are still a TV personality-the same with sport.

It's not a contest for who has the best personality in sport, its a contest for sports personalities, and as SeanDoc said-Calzaghe won it

I think that if you use the words on the tin " Sports Personality" Haye should win it hands down... But I would not anticipate this to be a platform to launch Boxing back on the BBC...

I think that Button wins with Haye in 2nd place followed by Ennis...

Yes, you did leave yourself wide-open for the counter ala Hatton. Looks like I beat Dan for immaturity in this thread - I don't know if that's good or a bad thing:lol:.

^^^This is more-so what I was getting at. I did actually mean to put 'popularity' in the original post. Haye is a mainstream celebrity/ superstar now - if SPOTY was based purely on sporting achievements, Haye should have been nominated after blitzing Enzo. JC was only nominated after a win over Kessler after years of domination at 168 and after he achieved mainstream appeal as well, and Hatton was nominated after one of the biggest promotions involving a British fighter in a very long time. Wasn't in the top 2 after the Tszyu win, was he?;):good

JMM should win the overseas award as well:deal.

I don't see Jenson Button as a personality though.

I'd say Jessica Ennis is a deserving winner..... after missing the Olympics to come back and whup a pretty strong field in a tough event.

Haye comes across as a bit of an arse to a lot of people (not me) and hasn't exactly been active, has he?

Haye
12-01-2009, 06:04 AM
Its also very shoddy and cheap journamlism when the BBC state, ''In 2009 David Haye became the Heavyweight Champion of the World''.

No he fucking didn't. He picked up a paper title.

Its all a bit of a bandwagon with Haye at the moment, which is a good thing i suppose. But it also means a lot of very poor journalism from football writers who suddenly know everything about boxing.

DamonD
12-01-2009, 06:31 AM
He deserves to win it, being the first British heavyweight title holder in five years and actually having a personality.

But Button will probably win it, more's the pity.

everyone on here should be voting for haye, even if its on the bullshit platform of 'heavyweight champ' which he isnt, its still good for the sport to be in mainstream sports journalism

think so, he was on and being made to feel uncomfortable by des lynam being mostly asked was he afraid to have fought tyson so prob 1996.

thing is he got it ahead of micheal johnson, who had just broken the 20 yrs old 200m record and won the 400m in the olympics so it was a mark of respect to holyfield to have gotten it.

he was also on it the year lennox lewis won with ali and they both conducted themselves pretty well.

I won't be voting and it would do boxing no harm at all if Haye won but if I wasn't a boxing fan I'd probably go for Ennis. It out of her and Button IMHO and I hate motor "sports".

I guess at the time with it being a massive upset...... he was entitled to win it - as for Holyfield being scared of Tyson :dead

In hindsight I suppose it's a 'Evander Holyfield beat Mike Tyson.... so what' really..... even though it was an amazing performance - one could be forgiven for expecting that from Holyfield really.

Button deserves this title in my opinion, an amazing turn around from no team to World Champion in 10 months!!

Haye having 1 fight this year against Valuev albeit a excellent mature performance i wasnt sure he was capable of, does not make him a front runner in this competition, im suprised he made the final ten.

But good luck to him.

Ah, that was bit crass but no big deal. He was just trying to get some publicity and jump the queue for a title shot (it worked!!).

Haye's publicity stunt showed no respect or gratitude to the sport that he earns his very living from. Sadly, barely a month goes by when it seems there isn't another fatality in boxing, but how will the world look upon boxing when a ring death is compounded by the deceased boxer being depictated as a corpse with a severed head in the pre-fight hype to sell more tickets? And boxing expects to be respected and taken seriously? And shown on tv...by the BBC no less? And doesn't every boxer who loses his life in the ring deserve to be spared the infamy that would surely come from being portayed in this manner?

Sorry to be morbid, but I feel this is the reality of Haye's actions.

GazOC

Laikaka
