So sad to watch him go out like that. 6 years ago he Green, Lacy and Calzaghe wouldn't have lasted past the 3rd with him and Tarver/Johnson would have been stood on their heads too pre-Ruiz

That Video Says a lot to me and hopefully all watching.
Roy Jones Jnr Loves His Fans, All of these recent fights have been to seal a legacy that should and imo was already sealed long ago. Roy underneath all his brash talk and showmanship is a vulnerable caring guy by the looks and i think the criticism of having a glass jaw and being a fraud hurts him.
Looks to have a lovely family..ok i hoped his mother would say something bit more caring then what see said but all the same he got a nice family...all the millions in the bank, Go enjoy the good life Roy and make Square Ring one of best companies in boxing.

Roy Jones jr is a legend, he will be forever be remembered, he is a formeber pound 4 pound champion, he was named 'fighter of the decade in the 90's, a one in a life time fighter who stayed in boxing too long.

Yes, there was something very emotional about the whole thing. The sombre mood was almost palpable. This man was Superman, to then be walking through a stadium, giving that interview, I don't know, doesn't seem right somehow.
Good post though Kool. Thanks.

I get the impression that his mother has just given up on tying to get Roy to do anything, she's realised that once his minds made up he;s going to do whatever it's set on regardless and as such just supports whatever decisions he makes as fighting against them will only make things worse.

RJJ was the greatest fighter of all time imo, however he dropped the biggest bollock of all time and that was believing the hype and chasing the dollar. He should of either stayed at lhw or stuck at hw when he made the change. You can move up and down in weight slightly but not at the extreme he took it to. Hope he has leaves the game, and as calzaghe's biggest fan i to agree Rjj would have tore him up if they ever met primefor prime...God Bless RJJ

Call me a twat, but I actually felt quite emotional wathcing the first part of that interview. One of my all-time faves and it's such a shame for him to have to contemplate retirement by going out like that. Sadly, he is way beyond the 'right time' to retire now and people will always look back and say that he carried on too long past his prime. He was always good on the commentary team on HBO, IMO, so hopefully they haver a job waiting for him as he deserves to be kept in the limelight. Sucks seeing him like that and I don't want to see it again:|.

Yeah you've hit nail on the head. She seemed sorta....like what can i do???? he don't listen. I think Roy's now learned...do as your momma says!!!

end of an era. it's time to call it a day. dlh has gone. mosley and x will succumb to time eventually.
roy's lost everything that made him great. green would have been dominated years ago.
roy, it's been emotional to the end.

Not a twat at all mate, I know exactly what you mean. HBO did actually offer him a contract to do regular commentary but Jones didn't want to make that kind of a commitment. I think he's a fantastic commentator, so hopefully the deal is still on the table. I remember when he was doing Hopkins v Allen 3, he predicted Nard was going to knock him down with a looping right just before it happened.

Yes. I was going through old copies of The Ring recently. 2001, DLH, Mosley, Nard, Jones, Tszyu. They were the champs back then, and what champs they were (are). Sad to see that era coming to an end.

Apparently Jones Jr didn't see the point of turning up for HBO meetings and pre-show planning, etc. He just wanted to turn up at ringside on the night and give his opinion.
That video was quite saddening.

I don't feel any sympathy for Jones. He was a disrespectful twat plenty of times himself and now bad karma's catching up with him.
Also, his resume post SMW is utterly dreadful. I think he'd have always struggled with Tarver, Johnson and Calzaghe - they were the sort of guys that forced him to fight out of his comfort zone.
He perpetrated a grand fraud with his ATG routine when he has done next to nothing to deserve it, historically speaking.

Legend :)
I thought he looked quite old when he fought Calzaghe but he's aged a shitload since then.
You've more than earned your retirement Roy. You'll be missed!

I dread to think where you must place the likes of Calzaghe, Tarver and Johnson then, in terms of ATG status.

Jones knocks Calzaghe out prime for prime. Calzaghe knows it as well as anyone. Even the likes of Benn knew how damn good Jones was. Jones should of retired imo after the Tarver win but he's one person that can't leave things be and wanted to show everyone he could beat Tarver outright and well....it all was downhill from there.

Absolutely nowhere. I like Calzaghe but there is no argument for him as an ATG.
That's got fuck all to do with my opinion of Jones, though.

You seem to have a personal problem with him. Just as people say Nard's and Joe's competion was weak at 160 and 168, so was Jones' at 175. He beat who was out there though (besides Dariusz but that's a long winded story) and looked damn good doing it.

I have a problem with his being rated an all time great based on his achievements and dubious H2H comparisons. He's a very good fighter, with exceptional physical talents - but he's not done enough to really be a legend.

How ironic that the man who seemed so switched on ends up with (as Mayweather put it) boxing retiring him rather than him retiring from boxing.
Particularly after G man I really thought he'd be one to quit while he was ahead.
Sad really, what an addictive drug.

He's about to cry at 2.21 I think. So sad man, Jones would have made Green look like a joke had he been even 30% of his old self. What a great fighter, and I hope he gets a career in commentating on HBO. He was so good.

I really, really like Roy. Seems like such a decent, nice guy.
His mum seemed really sweet too.
It's sad but I don't feel too heartbroken for him, he's had an amazing career, he's rich as fuck and, if he can slow his speech pattern down a little, he is an intelligent and knowledgeable man, who would be a benefit to commentating or other in front of the camera work.
Can anyone tell me if Roy ever fought in England?

No lad..
Roy Jones has only fought outside of the states twice...
During the Olympics..
And recently in Austrailia..

Jones was awesome for HBO during the 90s. He'd get a job back there sharpish. So much better than Lennox and Foreman.

A true legend of the game no doubt and recent events have no bearing on his legacy, imo. Roy jones is a true All Time Great, zero doubt.
Still, he's made many millions out of being at best an average fighter for half a decade - in the context of people struggling in the real world, I find it hard to feel too sorry for him.
The outcome clearly upset him though and I think he's finally realised it may be time to face the music, that it is over - he is not "superman" anymore. The limousine looks out of place and sadly shows even superman doesn't draw the crowds after several losses.
Luckily for Roy though, his chin (of recent years) ironically may be his saviour. He hasn't had any long tragic Ali like beatings and therefore, hopefully now, will retire with all his faculties intact.

He did loads of Barrera's fights when he was fighting for HBO on Boxing After Dark. Excellent all the time, and he also did the third fight with Morales.
Brilliant commentator.
Roy Jones is a true great and a giant of this era. No doubts about it.
But of course he should retire. The last few wins sort of got a few peoples hopes up, not least his own, but this should quickly quell that and common sense will prevail. You know when RJJ is talking about retirement he's realised such is his ego.

an athletic phenom who could've been great at anything he tried at a young age (thank God he chose boxing) but with all that freak athleticism came a whole alotta fundamental flaws and is the reason he finds himself in this situation when fundamentally sound guys like JT and Bernard still ain't taking a beating past 40.
Roy was just so unique though and imo its very difficult to see anyone who beats him in his prime in the sports history.
strange though how he was so effected by what happened to his good friend the Gman and he still continued to fight into his 40th.

All of these posts, bar the haters, are terrific and are fitting tributes.
To be honest after watching that I dunno what to say. I've got all his fights, have watched them over and over and over, have studied him, tried to copy his moves when I used to train(!) but that video was a wee bit much for me.
After the Ruiz fight he should've retired or took the fight with Tyson, whichever.
RJJ = legend.

Hopkins still thinks the fight's a possibility, but the end of the day, he's just thinking of the money and also the fact it's a chance to avenge his defeat to RJJ in '93.
This fight shouldn't happen for me, if there was going to be a Hopkins-Jones Jr II it should have been done years ago when both fighters were in the prime. It's a pointless fight and I think RJJ should retire now.
RJJ is a true legend of the sport and I do hope he doesn't take another fight.....but if he does, I will watch it and root for him!

This post from this idiot must be the worst, most ridiculous post i've ever had the misfortune to read on this forum, and ive read plenty of shite in the past from guys like Dunky .. But this post is beyond contempt, the poster knows nothing about boxing and knows nothing about the true genius of Roy Jones Jr .... You musnt of been a boxing fan in the 90's, apart from the fight were he was dq'd he bearly lost a round in countless fights, he was the most dominant fighter i have ever seen, the most fluid and most naturally gifted i've ever seen, he has to be regarded as the greatest fighter since Sugar Ray Leonard, that question isnt even in debate ..
He was the undisputed P4P no 1 for almost a decade, he didnt have much competition at Lightweight but to be frank it would have taken Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore or Harry Greb to really push him .... Tarver, Calzaghe and any of these average over-acheivers wouldnt have done anything with a 90s Roy, he would have toyed with them, showboated and made them look very ordinary .... To have the greatest fighter of this generation denigrated by a tosser like this poster annoys the hell out of me, is no boxer and his acheivements beyond criticism in here ??
Roy Jones is a fighter that fans of the sport will be watching for the next 100 years, they will be mezmerised, they will be awestruck and they will pray for the 'Next Roy Jones', but they'll never be one. A true Boxing genius, a true superstar and i want to say what an honour and a true pleasure it was to watch his career, unforgettable ..
In 100 years people will watch Calzaghe and think to themselves, 'Why the hell is he punching like that?', 'That looks awful, hes missing 9 out of 10 punches, no accuracy, no skill but 100% effort and hard work'
Axl Salutes Roy Jones Jr !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, basically - because I disagree with you I'm an idiot, and know nothing about boxing?
My opinion of Jones is based on who he fought and the way he behaved against them in the ring. If after he beat Toney he'd thought to himself - I'm a great fighter, with incredible skills, and I want to challenge myself by facing the best - then I'd have no issue with him. But he didn't. He squandered his best years.
When he could fight, he didn't want to. Now he can't he won't stop.
The guy was contemptuous and arrogant towards many of his opponents, so I don't feel sorry for him. he's achieved much more than almost anyone else on earth, he's made a fortune, he's got his health, he's got his family - what's to feel sorry for? He lost a fight - so what, it's boxing, he's shot and it was bound to happen. Again.
So grow up, and stop thinking that just cause someone disagrees with you, they must automatically be wrong.
