Greb was the most accomplished ever natural middle, but Monzon was the best champion to reign at the weight, IMO.

Greb, no doubt. However, had Ketchell never been murdered, its arguable the man could have reigned a decade more---there simply were no middleweights in that time who could have stood up to his punching power, and in the era of 20-45 round fights, I dont see many lasting that long against him.

I have to go with Greb here.
Fitzsimmons is a close second.

marvin hagler, the guy was what boxings all about.both hands, chin, heart.would have had more title defences than monzon if any champ gave him an earlier shot at title.leonard & the pussycats stole his belt in the end,tragidy......

I would say Marvin Hagler or Carlos Monzon. Sugar Ray Robinson was better than those two, pound for pound, but he was at his very best as a welterweight.

Had Roy, Hopkins, Reid and whoever had existed back in Grebs time, I doubt many of us would have heard of Harry, perhaps only as a mid-range win of the aforementioned fighters.

Harry Greb, then Monzon, then Hagler. Bob Fitzsimmons should be on that poll though rather than Dempsey imo.

And rightly so to.
Robinson has no hope of doing what Fitzsimmons did as a middleweight.

Based on what exactly? One dull points win over a green and unproven Bernard Hopkins?
Peak Marvin Hagler beats that version of Roy, no doubt.
But ultimately, Monzon was the best mw of all-time, as he was better than the mw Robinson, Hagler or Hopkins, and we don't have sufficient footage of Greb.
How can LaMotta even be in the poll anyway, how could anyone have him above SRR?!

What exactly can Monzon do to Roy Jones Jr?
Against an athlete like Roy, probably nothing. What equalizer does he have here to Roy just pot shotting him?

Yeah. But Lamotta was a accomplished Middleweight.
He did defeat Robison do he had a huge weight advantge. And all 6 fights between him and Robinson were lose hard fought affairs, besides the 13th round of the last bout, were Lamotta was servely weight drained.
He also defeated Fritzie Zivic, Tommy Bell, Holman Williams, Marcel Cerdan, Tiberio Mitri, Laurent Dauthuille, and Gene Hairston.
Thats a damn right solid Middleweight resume.......

The equalizer that left ultra tough Nino Benvenuti a shattered sack of bone and muscle in the corner for one. As well as patience, timing, technical proficiency, inhuman stamina, resilience and championship experience at the weight.

:-( It's not often you see a post as bad as this in the Classic Forum. Have you ever seen Monzon fight? I sincerely doubt it.

Monzon had the ability to use the 15 round distance in a most effective and cruel manner, and coupled with that right of his, he would have stopped Jones before the end of the 14th round. Monzon's right, which bludgeoned Nino Benvenuti would have connected with Jone's chin...and the rather chinny RJJ would have been stopped.

toss up between monzon and hagler. i prefer hagler. i think he looks and fights better. where as monzon seems clumsy and ungainly. i know that shouldnt be the deciding factor but they are so close in terms of achivement i base my views on haglers allrounded abilty

Greb, Hagler, Monzon...in that order.
I would say Hagler just ahead of Monzon.
I havn't read enough about Greb to form an opinion on him yet.

I voted SRR too quickly, had his welterweight acheivements in my mind wrongly. Would still have him in my top 3 though. Have only seen Monzon twice although im aware of his exploits so i cant really make a call on him (my old man swears by him tho). This is a hard one to call

Greb's stock has risen greatly in my mind over the past several weeks as I have closely studied his record. His record is astonishing. From the sound of things, on his best night he crawled all over his opponents.
But I voted for Hagler because of his dominance. He was the best middleweight for a decade. All but three of his 14 title fights went the distance. His draws and losses were mostly undeserved. He avenged all of his blemishes except the last. He destroyed some terrific fighters. He was extremely durable. He was immensely talented. He could box or brawl. He was thilling to watch. A true blue collar warrior.
