of the year by the BBC?
He has just become the first guy to hold world titles in seven different weights.... I mean only about a year and half ago he was fighting Marquez at super feather! what he has done since (this year specifically of course) is nothing short of astounding! He at least deserved a mention. (If they did I missed it.:!:)

The bloke just hasn't had enough exposure in the UK to win that sort of thing.

He shouldve been nominated.
IMO a win over Maywather puts him there.

How many of his live fights have been shown?
I've heard the most casual of fight fans talk alot about Pacquiao.... let's not forget the thoasands that turned up on the Hatton press conference.
But anyway, do you agree he did enough?

We've had this discussion on here, theres no "deserved" about that award. The public either votes for a certain person or they don't and they do it for whatever reasons they choose. FFS Ryan Giggs won the main award!!
Most casual boxing fans know Manny, but how does that compare to how many people have heard of Usian Bolt? Its not even close.

Although I agree with you on the main award, just for the purposes of pedantry, the overseas award is selected by a panel of sports journalists rather than a public vote.

I have no problem with Bolt winning but as he won it before I thought Pacman should of got it

I'm only talking about the international award snippy! and yes, soem achivements do outweigh others.... in this case it's Pacquiao's.
Bolt is a bit more famous but who was the other guy up for that award? I can't even remember his name and certainly ain't heard ANYONE talking about him before.

Whats with the 'snippy" comment? I'm just discussing a a point (that turned out to be wrong). Whats your problem with that?

The list of winners since the award began.
Last boxing winner was Evander Holyfield in 1996.
I don't have a problem with Bolt winning it. Hardly anybody knows who Pacquiao is - never mind what he actually did this year, whereas nearly everybody knows Bolt and what he achieved.
Plus it's about personality - Bolt really sells himself, Pacquiao is a more reserved kind of character..... plus the fact that he won a WW title without allowing his opponent to weigh in at the WW limit - not sure how they do their research, but that might count for something...... Cotto isn't a name in the UK, who really cares if Pac beat him?
Just playing devil's advocate.

The other guy was Roger Federer. The Wimbledon fanatics (and of course the BBC) love him, hence him being up there.

bbc are full of shit! & always will be.
the awards is irrelavent when they just concentrate on British Only Mainstream sports that have been covered by bbc.
for example...Manny didnt even get a mention! like he doesnt exist.
slip&counter brought some sense to this thread. Who gives a wank? Sports Personality of the Year? I'm sure these guys don't cry themselves to sleep if they don't win it.

Shane Warne won it in 2005 mainly on the strength of his Ashes performances as seen on Channel Four....

BBC only generally gives awards to sports people who are on BBC.
They gave up on Boxing, and would not give any award to a boxer.
Thats the reason why you get olympic divers getting nominated who are nothing, like the boy Tom. What a joke!

There is an inherent problem for boxers with these type of awards stemming from the fragmented nature of the sport and the fact that they perform so rarely.
If we take Manny Pacquiao as an example, what has he done this year? Beat one guy who may or may not have been the best light welterweight around at the time and one guy who most people probably didn't consider the best welterweight around at the time.
Someone like Federer, on the other hand, plays tens of tournaments per year and to win them has to beat the best opposition. We all know that Rafael Nadal is the best guy he can meet and we know that they'll end up playing each other five or six times a year on average.

It's hard to count out Usain Bolt, but that Pacquiao wasn't even nominated is a disgrace.

So you think that the BBC, after the furore in recent years about phone in lines and suchlike, would fabricate a selection of nominations that they claim to be from independent sports journalists and publish them on their website, attributing them to the newspaper that alledgedly made them, and no-one would notice? :nut

Couple of clues for you.
The people who write boxing stories for the bbc website do actually work for the bbc, so completely different example.
The people who attach photos to stories (either in print or internet media) aren't generally the same people who write the stories.
You really don't have the faintest idea, do you?

Simple test silly_illy (and I think the simpler the better where you're concerned).
The Daily Mail are never shy about running an anti-BBC story. Why don't you ring them and inform them of the fact that the BBC fabricated a list of nominations that they say was submitted by the Mail and posted it on their website? I'm sure they'll run a full front page expose of the shocking scam. Won't they?
Easy way to prove you're right. Off you go.

Can't really believe people are getting annoyed by this award. I'm sure it doesn't really mean much to the athletes anyway.
How you can argue against the two that were on the shortlist above Manny though defies belief. The greatest sprinter of all time and probably the greatest tennis player of all time. Not like Manny is the greatest boxer of all time.
