It's nice to know the day before a big fight that a pretty good ref is going to be doing the match. I hate those situations where you get pumped up for a fight and then when it begins you notice Jay Nady or Lawrence Cole standing in the ring.

With Smoger in, I'm even more confident that Emmanuel is going to stop the fight and save Taylor.

I like Jay Nady

Me too. But Kenny Bayless is the best :)

yeah. actually i like most of the top refs today. smoger is good of course for bloodfests, while jay nady is best for fighters who are seriously hurt. bayless etc. to me seem the most invisible, which is a sign they are running the fight well. sometimes jay nady gets too invovled.

what i don't like are weak refs when in a hostile crowd or a bias ref based on ethnicity. can't pick a fight off the top of my head at the moment, BUT i've seen it happen and it's pretty low.

anyway smoger will be awesome for this fight! both fighters will definately get their chances to come back from any potential knock downs.

pavlik by late ko, or UD

I hate Nady. Lawrence Cole is just a retard, but Nady is both a moron and an asshole. The only positive thing about him reffing a match is that there is always a small possibility of him accidentally getting punched and knocked out.

actuallym whats-his-name steele, from hagler hearns was the best ref ever, with frank cappucino coming in second, and tony weeks coming in third.

Smoger's ok I guess. Jay Nady, on the other hand, is a real prick. Just go and watch Maskaev/Rahman II. Nady was picking on Oleg the whole time telling him to stop holding when he wasn't really doing anything wrong. Both guys would come together and Oleg would get the warning. Larry Merchant screamed "NO, YOU STOP JAY!" Fucking hilarious.

Larry Merchant screamed "NO, YOU STOP JAY!" Fucking hilarious. Nady is one of those refs who always needs something to do or he feels like he's not doing his job. Great refs are comfortable with having no presence during a fight. Joe Cortez should be mentioned. I like Kenny Bayless too, but the way he counts after a knockdown is a little crazy and it causes panic.

I really dont have a problem with most referees. They are a few that make shitty calls, but for the most part the do their jobs well. The way I see it, with the top referees like Nady, Drackulich, Cortez, Cole, Neumann, Lane, and Weeks, Is that you dont get to that level without doing your job well. Everyone makes bad calls now then, but it has been rare that I have honestly been pissed off at a ref

Jay Nady actually infuriated me in the MAB-JMM fight when he deducted a point from Barerra and didnt give him the knockdown
It doesn't always have to do with doing your job well. In Cole's case and other cases, it's just about what connections you have.. especially if it's a family connection.

I can't even describe how pissed off I was during MAB-JMM when Nady fucked up. I remember seeing that he was going to ref the fight and saying, "alright, just don't pay attention to him, it won't matter, he's not that bad".. then round 7 happened and I was ready to punch my TV. Barrera was getting his ass kicked in that round and then near the end, he came back beautifullly and knocked Marquez down. But all anyone remembers from that round is Barrera hitting him when he was on the canvas and Nady taking off a point.

Smoger is a decent option. I will echo comments regarding Jay Nady, who I have little confidence in. He irritates me.

frank cappucino is the best ref ever.

who can forget, during ward-gatti I:

"you dont fight with your head, Arthur."

Frank called him 'Arthur' all night...

Thank god it's not Eddie Cotton, because I would have to stuff cotton in my ears just to prevent hearing his annoying, panic stricken, repetative warnings, almost always unfairly hurled at one fighter. He is a biased ref. who unintentionally chooses to obsess about one illicit aspect of the fight, missing just about every other contraband. His refing can be characterized as very uneven.

His purple gloves look straight up pimp though. :hat

And he's in some of the best boxing highlight reels.. Maskaev knocking Rahman out of the ring, Golota unloading the three punch combo to Bowe's balls, etc..

I like Smoger and he should do a good job .

The best for me is Kenny Bayless , never seems to make a bad call and is usually anonymous(often the sign of a good ref) .

Imagine if Nady or Cotton had reffed Castillo v Corrales I , we'd have missed out on such a great fight and Tony Weeks really deserves credit for the way he let them go that night without needlessly stopping and breaking like Nady would have inevitably done .

Yeah Smoger is great. Just remember Mosley- Forest I, other ref would have stoped the fight, but thanks to Smoger, Mosley was allowed to continue and he hold his own for the rest of the fight.

No love for Mills Lane, eh? He was rather forceful but also allowed the fighters to do their jobs.

Dickey Steele sucks!

Smoger and Cappucino are by far the best refs if you like action fights. They dont stop fights too quickly ever. Not sure if Frank is still refing, but some of these other guys should take a page out of Smogers book, hes the best. He was always known as Double S on Tuesday Night Fights.

Smoger did the Miranda fight. I don't really care for him, but he will let them fight. That could be bad for JT.

Uh, you just contradicted yourself all in one sentence. You don't care for him, but he will let them fight? Isn't that a good thing for boxing fans:huh

Sometimes smogger lets guys take way too much punishment, don't forget a guy died the other day as a result of a fight, I do think smogger might get trigger happy tonight because of it, there is nothing worse than watching a guy out on his feet taking unnecessary punishment.

Slow down read the thread. I don't care for him, not because he lets them fight, but for his decision making skills, at times. I've seen him make some bad calls.

Smoger let Pavlik BEAT on Miranda.

I am not too found of this choice, Smoger is old and cannot keep separating six footers away, not to mention the terribly late stoppage of Miranda and the mouth-piece incident, he may step in too soon now to make up for the Miranda-Pavlik still very fresh in his mind and stop the fight something like R. Steele in Tyson-Ruddock I... Furthermore, Smoger seemed almost reluctant to stop Quintana against Cotto in Boardwalk Hall and Larry Hazzard had to intervene...

Too old? Smoger is well known for getting in the ring to box to stay in shape. The man knows how to do his job.
