View Full Version : The year that was...

2009.. Pretty spectacular for the local game to say the least. The local circuit being entertained with many notable bouts that led to affray in the ring, triumph unforseeable and the expectations of world class action to come. Kats, Vic and Green picked up belts O/S... Locally, Jackson Asiku picked up his own IBO crown as did Mundine, only to shock the local punters in announcing a bout at 154 Lbs..
What slice of 2009 was your own fav??? Luds and co.. please dont turn this thread into a Mundine is better than Green thread.

I have to say that the Talepeau vs Oganov fight was awesome (although the decision was not). I remember walking in just hoping Junior could walk out at the end of 5 rounds. A good step up for a local fighter.
I'm sure there are many other good ones but that one is more recent so sticks in my mind :)

Many great Aussie fights this year. Geale v Mundine is one that springs to mind, the Bolling v Yannick fight the other day was great. Earlier in the year the Dib v Browne Jr fight was awsome, alot of action and "Bad Blood" in that one. And also, even though it wasn't a great fight, Green's destruction of Jones Jr was pretty goddam special and hopefully has put Australia back on the map. Good year for Aussie boxing!

Yes big Col's KO win over Hoppa was most pleasing to watch. Geale dishing it to Mandy was a great fight to watch as well.

The high-light of my year was watching boxing back on FTA television.:happy:happy:happy

All of the above, and particular the shock of seeing RJJ stopped so quickly - my mate ducked out of the pub for only minutes and missed the whole fight! Had to ring him and say don't bother coming back!

Didn't get to see Yannick in this one. Bolling must be a smart kid to have knocked him off. Did Bolling being a southpaw worry Serge? Perhaps Serge not getting enough regular fights was a factor?
What can you tell us Hater?
mp punishing cotto, vic getting owned by agbeko was just painful, vic vs arce (i believe it was early this year) was great,

I'd have to say that I gizzed a little watching Willie Tomlinson on the DG v RJJ undercard.
His performance for me was a stand out this year against what was supposed to be far superior talent with a far more experienced pro record.
In my humble opinion this kid brought an excitement to the ring which I haven't seen in a long time from a young fighter taking it to an international talent.
If this kid stays fit 2010 will be a year to watch him grow into a real threat on the world scene.
I wish him all the best for Xmas.

Boxon.. Wil Tomlinson was the stand out for myself on that card also... Neat, compact and strong.. just hope he's guided away from rangey fighters for the next couple of season. Great fighter.

he's moving along really well but i want to see his chin tested before anointing him the next star.
i think his chin wont be his strong point. just a hunch...

Fair call.. probably fair to say he's been eased along up until the Kimbrough fight also. Given time to develop, Im sure he'd be a nice match for the likes of Valero in 18 months.
Will certainly has a bright future.

the kimbrough fight was a step up but not "too big". that kid had hardly fought out of west virginia (not a boxing hot bed) and was coming off a draw against a guy who had lost 5 of his last 6. kimbrough wasn't a puncher either.
so not knocking, but it wasn't like will was put in with a beast. remember will was $1.30 fav and kimbrough was $3....betting doesn't mean much but the odds makers got that one right.
It's early days for will. he is young and is getting better and growing in confidence. good little fighter.

Hopefully he'll get on some good cards and get decent prepation. I haven't seen bugger all all of him and cant comment on his chin.....lets hope its up to scratch so he can go hard with some decent fighters.
What do you think about match ups for him??

I'm surprised Valero is not made to book out ringside each fight because that's where his punches come from
When this guys gets in the ring with a fighter/ counter puncher he's dead......the guys always off balanced through most of his punching sets :rofl
He must be watching Vic's tapes of "ze killings"

will will be on green card again if he fights in sydney!
kimbro wasn't much bet a good ste up as stated.
needs to watch his guard and I too for some reason feel he may have a weakness on the jaw. no reason for saying this but when watching the fight just felt it.

It was a top fight and both blokes gave it their all. It was just tit for tat with Bolling taking the early rounds although they were competitive but Yannick soon adjusted and took the later rounds although they were also competitive. The knockdown sealed decided the fight in the end but still Yannick looked like he was ready to pounce if there were one or two more rounds. Both guys must have been ultra fit as I've never seen two guys go at it at that type of pace, especially in a division heavier than lightweight.

Absolutely agree about time, patience is a good thing. But you are making big statements about a fighter who's what 26-0, all by KO!!!

Ash, the blokes 26-0, all by the opponent 'feeling his power' as Vic would say and KO'ing them. What more do you want?
Your picking his style to pieces, yet he's the one doing the business.
I know forums are a place of opinion, but fucking hell there's some over the top ones being banded about!

Actually Flamengo, based on this assumption of being a nice match, do you think 'Wild Will' could beat Lenny Zapp then?
I couldn't see Will beating Lenny? Good fight yes, but I see Lenny stopping him, hence Valero is a huge step up to a whole lot of other levels.

Ahhh... you took notice of the wording.... " a nice match for". Now you might see my meaning mate.
Firstly Valero. Yes, 26 (0).. Valero has little improvement in ringcraft over the last 10 bouts. Still gets away with murder, leaves himself wide open with his head a target. In saying Will could be a nice match, I mean exactly that. I look forward to seeing Tomlinson improve greatly in the coming year.
Willl vs Zapp?? Not a bout that's likely to happen for any particular reason. Zapp is making great steps into higher ground already and there is no reason to go backwards. Perhaps a fight 3 years away? Again, I doubt it with the numbers of belts available.
