Derry Matthews has won this years British Young Boxer of the Year Award decided by the Boxing Writers Club.

Unbeaten Matthews topped one of the closest polls for years and will receive the award at The Savoy Hotel in London on 22nd October.

I had hoped John Fewkes would win this award but he and Nathan Cleverly tied for second place.

Matthews defends his WBU Featherweight Title against Marsh on October 13th.

There must have been someone better. I'd prefer to choose Kevin Mitchell or someone. Matthews has posted some very nice wins but its hard to overcome just how dirty he is.

Why doesn't anyone complain about Hatton being dirty or Skelton when he fought Williams.

At least they dont rub their glove into an open wound on someones head - see the simpson fight - Gash on the top of Simpsons head, and Derry drags his glove over the top of Simpsons head to open the wound further - now thats what i call DIRTY!!

Skelton was rubbing his head Into Williams though probably trying to open a cut up after head butting.

Everyone does complain about them being dirty. However when they do it, it looks to serve a purpose. Derry just looks flagrantly dirty, not even smart with it and being dirty isn't part of his game. He is a boxer who just happens to like being really dirty.

Don't get it twisted, fighters should be dirty if they can get away with it. Loads of great fighters are dirty - Ali, Foreman, Lewis, Marciano, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield etc That is 7 out of 10 of my top heavies.

Its a shame Matthews resorts to fouling.

He might win awards but these tactics won't win him many fans.

Because It serves a purpose doesn't make It right, same with getting away with It.

2 of those In your list showed clear dirty tatics In fights and got away with It, Marciano fouled his way to beat Cockell and Holyfields the master of headbutting.

I don't think I'm getting It twisted I think theres double standards here.

I never said it doesn't make it right BUT would you prefer to be dirty and leave with the W OR not be dirty and leave with an L!!!

I listed those fighters because they are dirty and got away with it. I think its a good thing.

Derrys dirtyness doesn't serve a purpose and he doesn't seem to be getting away with it.

I have had many of discussions with max over this but this might come as a suprise to him what im about to say! as most will know im a very big simpson fan as hes 1 of my closest friends but i dont think derry is always such a dirty fighter i think the occasion got to him that night fighting in his hometown, topping the bill and i feel he panicked after being put down in the 1st and realised he had a much harder fight than he anticipated. to me it looked as if he was just trying to use any tactic he could to win i seen the foster jr fight and he didnt seem a dirty fighter then in fact looked pretty classy and also seen him fight once before and he wasnt dirty. seems to me he did it once and has been tarred a really dirty fighter should judge him over a few fights and not just 1 imo.

I tihink you just come on here just to be a total twat.

Not once have i ever heard you give an opinion that seems even slightly reseonable. what an absolute prick you really are. Rubbing a glove into someones cut on there head after you have already been docked 2 points and on the verge of being DQ is wisdom to you???

Fuck off you are nothing more thasn an idiot who kows fuck all about boxing and obviously never stepped in a ring yourself.
