One fighter that never gets talked enough about or given the credit he deserves.

Never took up the sport of boxing until the age of 25. Shocked the amteur boxing world when he knocked out European amateur champion Paul Hodkinson. Nearly went to the 1988 Olympic Games.

John was a devastating puncher, his overhand right was a sledgehammer. He once went to a England camp to train, and the coaches said to him, you just hit the bag because you're never going to be any good technicaly as you're to old to learn.

But John never give up. As a pro he won the WBC International Title, The British Title and challaged for a World Title losing in a razor thin decision.

What a character John was and he proved you can achieve your dreams even at a advanced age.

Good post, probably best remembered as the guy who lost to Steve Robinson though.

Not just losing though, but blowing the Robinson fight. Davison (for once) was the favourite, and choked, but hindsight has been kind to him, as Robinson turned out to be a pretty solid champ.

Was it Palacios who failed a AIDS test and Robinson came in at 2/3 days notice?

I believe so.

With hindsight Robinson had beaten Harvey and Haccoun; and only lost a close decision in France to another Frenchman (Mehdi Labdouni) who was good enough to fight for the European title.

So perhaps the upset even then should not of been such a surprise.

Davison smashed Hodkinson in one round in 1985 - smashing his jaw in the process - but Hoko outscored him a year later. It is a shame they never met as pros.
