View Full Version : Where does Pavlik-Taylor rank among all-time middleweight fights?

It has to be top 5.this is right up there with Hagler-Hearns in my book. Maybe better in terms of pure action and a guy just showing unbelievable guts. I thought Pavlik was gone in the 2nd. His head was on a swivel and got up dazed with half the round left. To come back and score a knockout after that is just the stuff of legend. There's a rematch clause, and I look forward to it. I could definitely see Taylor taking the rematch if he fights more relaxed. He seemed to get too anxious at times and waste punches.

where do you guys see this as an all-time fight? I'm wanna watch it again.

All time? He isn't close yet.

Give him about 20 title defenses or a successful 168-175lb campaign and then we'll talk. :good

They're talking about where the fight itself ranks as a Middleweight fight.

I agree, Top 5. That lived up to the hype and more.

i picked pavlik, but jermain had me shitting my pants in the second!! damn definitely a hell of a fight, and once again shows a single punch can change things in this game.

Oh sorry haha. I'm tired at the moment.

As far as the fight is concerned I don't think it's even in the top 10 to be honest. It was filled with action but the middle rounds were relatively tactical. It was no Castillo-Corrales.

slow ass retard..get a fucking clue......................anyway the fight was one of the best all time JT went out of character early and came at Pavlik..surprised the shit out of me...That shit was exciting. I was yelling at the TV..Like JT you are a fucking retard..if a hurt man grabs you ...you dont wait for the ref to break you push his ass and follow up with a punch veteran style that would put the guy down and proabably...JT is just mentally handicapped like the above poster. :deal

here is where i differ with a lot of people

castillo-corrales was great, but those guys are tiny. these are big MWs throwing bombs at each other for 7 rds. the guy that looked out, comes back with a brutal KO

Up there with the great fights, not top 5 or 10 though.

Well number 1 is Hagler-Hearns

Not as good as Hagler Hearns, but surely is in the top 5. Unless somebody can think of a better candidate, I'd put it at number 2.

I have to say I found Pavlik v Miranda more exciting while watching live , but then again Sky weren't using the same camera angles as HBO that night and when I rewatched the fight on HBO it looked a lot more one sided .

A very good fight , but no way was it fight of the year or top 5 all-time at middleweight .

Hagler v Mugabi is probably #2 for me .

It'll take some time to list em all and rank them.

It's very difficult due to the lack of footage on some of the great MW fights of the past (Zale-Graziano 1-2 for instance).

Seeing a fight live and not knowing the outcome also plays a role. Hagler-Hearns is kind of overrated to me, but my opinion might be different if I had seen it live.

Some of the other great MW title fights I've seen are Duran-Barkley, Toney-McCallum I, and Castro-Jackson I.

It was a great fight! It was one of the best and I have been watching since the early 70's.

A historical-minded fan who can name dozens of brilliant middleweight fights going back over the course of a hundred years can probably list a lot that were as good or better than this. A century is a long time, after all.

But it was definitely a hell of a fight, one of the best middleweight fights of my lifetime. I agree with both of your points. It's also one of the best MW fights I have ever seen. Easy top 5. I've been following the sport for a good 40 years - but by no means have I seen all the top MW fights in the past 4 decades.

It is far to one sided to be considered anywhere near a Zale/GrazianoIII or Hagler/Hearns.

Pavlik lacks the ability to box properly and that hurt the quality of the fight. I think people are getting carried away with the exciting finish, but hey that is boxing at its best, even someone as poor as Pavlik, with a heart and a punch is always going to have a chance...

Neither of those fights were especially close.

Zale-Graziano 3 was the 1-sided fight of the trilogy and Hagler pretty much kicked Hearns's ass after round 1.
