Williams won;t hold onto the British title for long anyway and he was only 30.

i thought gammer was a reasonably capable domestic heavyweight and could have taken williams in a rematch (if williams reverts to his lethargic overweight version).

plus i'm not even sure if williams is going to continue boxing

Sounds like a man with his head screwed on. He made the most of what he had and it took a top 30 fighter in the world (in Williams) to beat him.

After that defeat I guess it dawned on Gammer there was little chance of going further foward in his career. If he does not need the money a decent journeyman can pick up and lacks the motivation, he has done the right thing.

He had a career he can be proud of.

Did any of you catch the last three rounds of the fight on Setanta? My god, what a stinker.

McDermot looked knackered, & was flicking out an ineffective jab that was falling short & landing on Gammers gloves most of the time. & what was Gammer doing? nothing. walking forward & thats about it.

According to macarinelli, he said he felt whilst sparring with Gammer that Gammer had lost his desire, & it looked like that from the rounds I seen.

Credit to McDermott though, the guy deserves some luck after being rabbit punched to a premature stoppage defeat by Skelton.

Gammer looked in awful shape, I turned the TV off as soon as soon as the fight came on. Good he is retiring, boxing is bad for people.

Could of been worse; I remember Alex Garcia turning down a fight with then undefeated Heavyweight Champion Riddick Bowe, for £250,000+ only to blow his next fight with 12 and 8 journeyman Mike Dixon...

Journeyman: Any experienced, competent but routine worker or performer....

That seemed to sum up Gammer perfectly.

JOurneymen typically turn up week in week out, or month in month out with their purpose being to oppose the "home" fighter without any real intention of winning. Peter Buckley bein the A* prime example. Gammer was a british champion who lost to a former world title challenger. His only other defeat was last saturday and rumours are rife retirement was on the cards before hand. Turning up 2 hours late for weigh in, not staying in sheffield but arriving just before fight time etc...

If gammer is a journeyman with his record that puts about 95% of british boxers in that bracket, surely?

No... 99% of fighters are journeymen.

Excluding no contests/no decisions and draws every fight must have a winner and loser, and as the 1% of fighters build up 20+ wins sometimes with no defeats, by default the rest suffer them defeats...

I strongly disagree and Im sure the likes of Jamie Moore and even jeff who post on here would too. I'd simply never put someone with a heavy winning record, even a british title, into the journeyman bracket.

He looked amazingly poor during his last two fights, just not mentally in it. Itis not surprising to see him retire.
