how does this mobidly obese sloth still keep his job after this? if you've ever read his articles, or joined his chat sessions, he really knows very little about the science of the sport. he only reports rumors, and NEVER comments on the ring generalship, intangibles, etc. what's even more puzzling, he constantly mentions his disdain for alcohol and his love for quizno's sandwiches in his chat sessions. (has been for well over a year) what happened to the old, grizzled journalists, i.e., wc heinz, larry merchant, jack fiske, who could really extoll the beauty of the sport and weren't afraid of a little scotch?

who is this mental midget? can't believe espn picked him off the usa today scrap heap. heck, he's not even the best boxing journalist on espn.com. i think Kieran Mulvaney and Joe Tessitore can write circles around him. there's no doubt he loves the sport, but his skills are just subpar.

I used to like reading Rafael in the USA Today, just because it was a monthly full page spread on boxing that I could look forward to. I never found him to be brilliant, but not a complete idiot either. Apparently the idiots at ESPN have rubbed off on him. Instead of watching the fight, he was trying to come up with his own typical ESPN signature phrase like Berman's BACK,BACK,BACK or BOOYAH! for the clown with the cross eyes and glasses.

We all have differing views on judging a fight, but 6-0? Dominate? You don't even have to know the sport to realize what was going on in the ring last night. I already lost respect for the fat slob when he went to the anti christ of boxing, ESPN. Now I'm not sure what words explain his ineptitude.

I still think watching it in HD on my bigscreen that Lampley kept calling Pavlik shots that weren't landing, and Taylor was landing the much more telling blows, Pavlik landed as well, but they weren't knocking Taylors head back (until the 7th) while Taylors shots routinley had Pavliks head acting like a bobblehead doll.

Its funny what different people see and hear when watching a fight. I thought the exact opposite to be true of Lampley screaming for Taylor. Lampley was actually not as biased toward either guy like he normally is, but none the less, I thought he was calling shots for Taylor more than Pavlik.

What cracks me up about commentators in general is that they rarely comment on the subtle aspects of what going on in the ring. There are times that a shot lands by a fighter and his opponent takes a slight step back and disengages for several seconds, which at times means he is slightly buzzed or possibly hurt enough for the other fighter to jump on and the commentator does not even notice and keeps blathering on about the crowd, or the trainers relationship with his fighter, etc.

The only commentators I've found to actually notice the little things are Emanuel Steward and as much as I can't stand him I have to admit he does notice the little things- Teddy Atlas.

On the HBO site so did Bert Sugars ass. He only gave Pavlik one round, and he gave Taylor a 10-7 round 2.

Of course Bert Sugar had an awful scorecard. The man is a charicature of himself. He is an embarrasment to the sport of boxing. The general public unfortunately recognizes this biased piece of garbage as being "the voice of boxing". He then passes on revised history, pathetic uninformed opinions as fact. He is the king of misinformation to the general public when it comes to boxing. Just the sight of the man with his lame ass fedora and cheap cigars makes me want to puke.

How could you score the first round for Pavlik? Rest of it I had the same as you, although I thought rounds 4 - 6 could have leigitmately gone either way. 1 + 2 were clearly Taylor and 3 was clearly Pavlik though, IMHO.

Rafael's not much at scoring. He's very useful with rumors and is good at factual reporting, but doesn't have a great eye for a lot of what goes on in the ring.

What does that tell u about the majority of the posters on this site then? I had Pavlik up 4-2 after 6. He was raking Taylor with those right hands all night. Taylor was offering up little flurries here and there but Pavlik was doing the more steady work.

Bert is completely irrelevant these days. he seems like the alzheimers-ridden uncle that people tolerate because he used to be well-respected. i actually spasm in discomfort when he dissects a fight.

I will say that I think Pavlik was blocking far more shots than he was getting credit for. If all the power punches Jermain got credit for according to the stats landed, Pavlik's face would've looked much worse with how hard Taylor was winging them. The same way Taylor did a good job of avoiding punishment when up against the ropes most of the fight, Pavlik did a better job of protecting himself than what appeared at first glance.
