CEBU CITY -- Unheralded Negrense Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes of the ALA Boxing Gym won by unanimous decision over previously undefeated Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym of Thailand to capture the WBO minimumweight crown at the Waterfront Hotel late last night and gave the Philippines its fourth world title this year and the first world title for the famed ALA Stable of Antonio L. Aldeguer.

Nietes (22-1-0 13KOs) boxed beautifully in the first four rounds and showed great defensive skills which Pornsawan (20-1-0 15KOs) was unable to penetrate. Midway in the 4th, Nietes sent Porsawan to the canvas by a body and head combo capped by a right straight to the jaw. At this point Nietes was dominating Pornsawan and the fight was developing to be a shutout victory for Nietes.

The Thai, as if stung by the knockdown in the fourth, came charging back in the fifth and opted to fight inside coupled with relentless punching which caught Nietes offguard. Pornsawan clearly took the fifth round.

Pornsawan continued to pressure Nietes in the sixth round with his non-stop but mostly ineffective punching. The phone-booth style of fighting however took away Nietes's well-timed bombs which needed some space to detonate as Nietes showed signs of fatigue.

Pornsawan continued to bully Nietes, who was running out of stamina, in the remainder of the fight but Nietes had clearly won several of the remaining rounds when he backpedalled and boxed with the ever-surging Thai. Pornsawan had been deducted a point in the 10th round for low blows after several warnings.

Judge Salven Lagumbay of the Philippines had it 116-110, Levi Martinez of the U.S., 115-111 and Sawaeng Taweekoon of Thailand, 114-113, all for Nietes.

Nietes's victory capped a successful evening for the ALA Boys.

Top superfly prospect and rising star AJ 'Bazooka' Banal made short work of Mexican super flyweight champion Esau Gaona with a first round demolition topped by three knockdowns to capture the WBO Youth super flyweight title.

Robert Allanic successfully defended his WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight crown over In Suk Song of Korea by 11th round TKO.

Rocky Fuentes defended his Philippine flyweight title by outpoint top contender Danilo Lerio over 12 rounds. Another ALA prospect, super featherweight James Bacon, fighting in his second professional fight, sent Roldan Sayson of Cagayan de Oro to the stretchers by a 3rd round TKO. Bacon and Sayson exchanged knocked downs in the 2nd round.

Nietes, the new WBO minimumweight champion, has now joined the exclusive group of reigning Filipino world champions headed by Florante Condes (minimumweight, IBF), Nonito Donaire, Jr. (flyweight, IBF, IBO) and Gerry Peņalosa (bantamweight, WBO).

The unassuming Donnie Nietes also finally gave the ALA Stable its first world crown after a history of failed bids. Last year, Gorres lost a controversial decision to superfly Mexican champ Fernando Montiel; Czar Amonsot also failed his bid against Michael Katsidis in a lightweight bout last July; and ALA's brightest star Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista came crushing to the canvas after being bombed by Daniel Ponce de Leon of Mexico in the first round of their superfbantam fight last August 11.

Congratulations to him

now if our boy Manny Pacquiao does his buisness and finishes off Barrera

then its safe to say Pinoy boxing had a great year compared to a horrible one last year.

Don't get too excited because Pacman is " supposed " to be barrera..no biggie really.

Wait until he faces a live fighter so he can get schooled again.

Im not overlooking Barrera for 1 sec and I hope Manny doesnt either, the only thing Manny has to do(if he beats Barrera) is fight Marquez and settle this unfinished buisness from the first fight, after that pacquiao can retire and do whatever the hell he wants for all i care.

10-01-2007, 12:59 AM
Do you really believe Barrera has a chance or are you just saying that so pacman's victory won't be discredited?

Right, after he finishes barrera, he needs to settle the score with Marquez or fight the winner of Soto/Guzman cuz those are the only significant fights for him as far as im concerned, unless he moves up to 135 for Diaz or Katsidis which I doubt would happen.

I ridden Barrera off against Hamed,Morales 3 and Juarez 2. No way in hell will I write him off against my favorite fighter, a pacman victory will write off the 1st fight as a fluke and depending on how Pacman performs , if he is impressive and destroys Mab again like he did in the first fight then we can end all talks about a prime-focused mab beats pacquiao. A victory will also add a ring belt at 130 to Pacquiaos legacy if he wins this saturday ( yeah i dont agree with it but thats what will happen if he wins).

And as far as katsidas/Diaz is concern, Pacquiao is at his highest peak weight limit he should avoid lightweight at all cost, and history shows that many dominant great ,featherweight, superfeather weight fighters have a real hard time transitioning and being successful at lightweight.

If they want the fight so bad tell them to come down to 130.

YUP.
I SAW THE FIGHT LAST NIGHT: NIETES HAVE GOOD DEFENSE: BOBS AND WEAVES AS HE LOOK FOR ANGLES AND DOES RIGHT CROSSES AND UPPERCUTS VERY WELL!
THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS HE SEEMS TO LACK STAMINA, FORTUNATELY FOR HIM HE FOUND HIS SECOND WIND AROUND ROUND 8 AT THE RIGHT TIME WHERE HIS THAI OPPONENT WAS WINNING 5,6,7
HIS THAI OPPONENT WAS NO PUNY: HE WAS VERY TOUGH AND WENT TOE TO TOE WITH OUR MAN, AHAS! HIS RECORD BEFORE WAS 20 WINS AND 15 KO AND NEVER LOST SINCE 2001 UNTIL HE MET NIETES!
CONGRATS TO NIETES: IT WAS A GOOD DAY FOR US PINOYS AND FOR ALA BOXING GYM AS WELL: AS ALL THEIR FIGHTERS BECAME CHAMPS THAT SAME NIGHT:
ROBERT ALLANIC- (RND 10 TKO) FOR THE WBO ASIA PACIFIC BANTAM WEIGHT TITLE; DEFENDED HIS TITLE,
AJ BANAL- (RND 1 TKO!) FOR THE VACANT WBO ASIA PACIFIC YOUTH TITLE,
ROCKY FUENTES- (RND 12 UD) DEFENDED HIS TITLE FOR THE GAB PHILIPPINE FLYWEIGHT TITLE,
AND DONNIE NIETES (UD RND 12) WINNING THE 4TH TITLE FOR THE PHI OF COURSE, FOR THE VACANT WBO MINIMUM WEIGHT TITLE.
ALA BOXING GYM IS TURNING OUT TO BE A MONSTER STABLE HERE AT THE PHI.!
CONGRATZ GUYS AND CHEERS TO US PINOYS.
:good :good :good :happy :happy :happy :happy

czar amonsot who failed to katsidis
z-gorres who failed to montiel
and finally rey boomboom bautista who failed recently to ponce de leon.

There's no possible way you can beat Wales in that department, unless all 3 of their champs lose their belts.

i know this is way too late. sorry i wasn't able to log on to esb after the fight.

it was a great card overall. even the fights that didn't inolve filipinos were entertaining. banal looked good buti really didn't expect esau to perform well because he was a late substitue, the printed tickets and the giant posters all showed banal vs camargo. oh by the way, i was seated beside esua and his manager on the flight back to manila. i wanted to talk to them but i really had nothing to say.

nietes visibly gassed in the middle rounds, good thing he managed to get a 2nd win and win the fight. the snake he had was nowhere near the size of what i was expecting. after the fight, i shook hands with nietes and congratulated him.

it was a good night of boxing. i bought a couple of ALA shirts and shorts at the lobby, i also bought the nike pacquaio shirt before i went to the fight.

if anyone here is planning to go to cebu, go to plantation bay my brothers. i highly recommend it. the people there were very nice and it seems like they know their boxing, save for a few idiots who kept on urging the fighters for uppercuts, i bet that's the only name for a punch that they know.

man, did you see the fight of aj banal? that was friggin wicked! only 1 round and the mexican fighter went to the deck 3 times. clearly the fight was stopped coz the referee saw that more damage would be made to the mexican if it ever continued. safety first right?
btw the next ala champ i'm expecting and hoping for a world title will be z the dream gorres.i'm rooting for this boy.
for me he represents the sweet science of boxing, if you are fond seeing guys getting ktfo, not me. i want to see a boxing clinic of hitting and not get hit: that's why i like z. i hope he gets the title soon enough and i hope he learned his lesson from the montiel fight.
btw the underdog, black called you a douche bag who does'nt know jack about boxing. duh! talking about ironic! :patsch

banal is a good kid. amazing upside on him, BUT, he must practice more on his defense. i think he has the tendency to over rely on his power that he leaves himself open at times. in that short fight, there were a few moments that his oppponent could have taken advantage of the openings on banal's defense. the key here is not to let him believe in his own hype. i know the filipinos are waiting to crown an heir apparent to pacdaddy and they wrongfully called boomboom that.

banal's handlers should take it step by step and not rush things. i absolutely agree that gorres will be a champ soon. he's is fundamentally sound. i was telling everybody a while back that only pac, penalosa and gorres and the filipino fighters who are ready for the big time. gorres should have won against montiel but he got cocky at a certain point in that match and he paid for it. the deductions by the ref did not help z either.

i was hoping to see them last sunday but sadly, i wasn't able to.

so the philippines has two champs at 105 and japan also has two champs at 105, well, kyowa is thai fighting from japan. i think it will be a great idea to put together a card with condes vs kyowa and nietes vs niida. taht would be loads of fun. and i would not mind flying to cebu again if ever that happens.

and here is my ranking of the minimumweight category
1. kyowa
2. niida
3. condes
4. nietes
5. rachman
6. gejon
7. sithsanerchai
8. barrera
9. omar soto
10. kratingdaenggym

note that i put the japanese in front of the two filipino champs because of more title defenses, meaning that they had tougher opposition.

and about black, he claimed that penalosa's ko of gonzales was "luckier" that arce's ko of rojas, anybody who can make that kind of assumption can call me whatever the hell they want because i know he don't know shit.
