View Full Version : The Fan's Belt

On the grounds that announcers do give credit to "The Ring Magazine" belt - why don't we have a "Fan's Belt"?
We're endlessly putting together our top 10s, if there was a way of aggregating our rankings, a sort of poll of polls it could bring a lot of credit back to Boxing.
Obviously, it would need a bit of thought because fans have the biggest bias of all those involved in Boxing, but there is hope - almost universal agreement that Bradley is the man at 140.
Anyway this could work?

Theres no "true" champ at 140 yet IMHO. Hatton was champ, got flattened by Pac and now Pac is a welterweight. Title vacant.
I don't think it would, too many fanboys/casual types.

or the nuthuggers championship???
Id like to see it where after say 3 defences of a title you have to meet another title holder or something, so you do get a undisputed champ,
or more of the super 6, but maybe more frequent fights where permitting

I keep these updated every week. (The mods just havent changed them recently) I post changes in a thread and posters on here debate whether they are correct.
Currently there are 7 ESB Champions
Heavyweight - Wlad Klitscko
Light Heavy - Chad Dawson
Middleweight - Kelly Pavlik
Lightweight - JM Marquez
Featherweight - Chris John
Super Fly - Vic Darchinyan
Light Fly - Ivan Calderon
In the other divions if these fighters face each other the winner will become ESB Champ;
Cruiserweight - Steve Cunningham vs Marco Huck or Zsolt Eredi
Super Middle - Andre Ward vs Lucian Bute or Carl Froch
Light Middle - Sergio Martinez vs Yuri Foreman, Cory Spinks or Paul Williams (If at Light Middle)
Welterweight - Shane Mosley vs Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather
Light Welter - Tim Bradley vs Amir Khan or Ricky Hatton
Super Feather - Robert Guerrero vs Juan Carlos Salgado
Super Bantam - Celestino Caballero vs Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym
Bantamweight - Hozumi Hasegawa vs Yohnny Perez or Anselmo Moreno

it wouldn't work because we would become more corrupt than all the other sanctioning bodies put together

I'm willing to pay for the belts - but until we raise the money with our corrupt bribe money they might have to do with the Primark Belt.
I was thinking that if it came from an elected committee it might have a degree of accountability - more than what can be said by any of the main sanctioning belts. Potential committee members could be judged on their independence from other influences, appreciation of styles Boxing knowledge. They would also have to declare their own favourite Boxers and Boxing styles (I'd always be more favourable to aggressive fighters) so that could be weighted in the system.
Looking at that ESB list, I can have few complaints - what would it take to get something like that more formally recognised?
My main point is that I see no reason why The Ring Belt has any prestige (especially since it is now owned by GBP) and should be valued any higher than something the fans put together.

It will be almost impossible to get anything formally recognized.
What are your complaints. I post the updates on this site at least every other week so your input is welcome.
Heavyweight - Wlad Klitscko beat Chagaev who was the top ranked fighter he could face (the other being his brother who he will never fight)
Light Heavy - Number 2 Hopkins had signed to fight Roy Jones Jnr and has talked about fighting at higher weights or retiring. With no intention of fighting Dawson we allowed Dawson to become ESB Champ by beating Glen Johnson who was ranked 3rd.
Middleweight - Kelly Pavlik beat Taylor who had beat Hopkins. His loss to Hopkins was at light heavy. His 3 defences agaisnt poor opponents have all been mandatorys for Alphabet belts so we cannot strip him. If his next defense is agaisnt someone thats not top 10 and is not a mandatory he will be stripped and placed at Number 1.
Lightweight - JM Marquez beat Joel Casamayor and then Juan Diaz to become ESB Champ
Featherweight - Chris John beat JM Marqez who was number 1 at Featherweight at the time
Super Fly - Vic Darchinyan beat Christian Mijares to be ESB Champ
Light Fly - Ivan Calderon beat Hugo Cazares to be ESB Champ
In the other divions if these fighters face each other the winner will become ESB Champ;
Cruiserweight - Thomas Adameck was ESB Champ but has since moved to Heavyweight. Steve Cunningham vs Marco Huck or Zsolt Eredi would be for the Championship.
Super Middle - The last Champion at Super Middle was Calzaghe who has retired. Andre Ward beat Mikkel Kessler who was ranked 1st so he is now number 1 and a fight vs Lucian Bute or Carl Froch will determine the Champion.
Light Middle - Sergiy Dzinziruk was at Number 1 but has been inactive for 1 year and is out of the rankings. Sergio Martinez vs Yuri Foreman, Cory Spinks or Paul Williams (If at Light Middle). Shane Mosley would have been the last champion at this weight but he has moved down to Welterweight.
Welterweight - I actually think there is a case for Mosley being champion. Will start a thread to debate it.
Light Welter - Manny Pacquiao was Champion but moved up in weight. Bradley is at number 1 but has not beaten a top 3 fighter the title is vacant. Tim Bradley vs Amir Khan or Ricky Hatton will be for the Championship.
Super Feather - Title has been vacant since Pacquiao moved up.Robert Guerrero vs Juan Carlos Salgado
Super Bantam - Title has been vacant since Vasquez and Marquez moved up. JM Lopez is also moving up so Celestino Caballero vs Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym will be for the championship.
Bantamweight - Hozumi Hasegawa vs Yohnny Perez or Anselmo Moreno will be for the championship.
Flyweight - Omar Narvaez vs Denkaosan Kaovichit will be for the championship.
Mininumweight - Roman Gonzalez vs Raul Garcia will be for the championship.
Quick question, out of curiosity... how did "the ring magazine" belt become so credible all of a sudden? Why did that one specifically start getting a mention over the years?

Sorry Rob you misunderstood - I have few complaints (as in none really), seems completely common sensical and I'm sure the vast majority of knowledgable fans would agree.
RE: Previous post - I don't know, that's my point!

There rules make sense. There rankings are done by a comitee that have no hidden agenda. Theres only 1 champion. Its the biggest boxing magazine and before the internet that was the only place to get news from around the world.
