Just curious because i'm seeing so many outrageous posts about him. You know people comparing "Prime fight X versus Pavlik"? It's pretty ridiculous.

Im white and I wanted JT to win
but im a fan of Pavlik now, he wont be X in his prime but he can definetely beat X right now even Knock him out.
I think because he is great figfhter to watch, he had a great fight against Miranda kOing him and then KO's the undefeated Taylor who has 2 wins over Bernard and many other top fighters

Most of those posts are joke threads, making fun of Pavlik's hype. I actually think he's a bit underrated - bout half the people consider him no more than a pretty good, flawed fighter.
This question has been asked a bunch of times and the answer is always the same. There are a small amount of people who like him because of this, but the vast majority don't. It happens to make a great trolling topic though.

I'll admit, i thought Pavlik was overrated before the fight but now i am thoroughly impressed with the guy. It's just that so many people on this board have gone OVERBOARD. They are comparing him with all time greats and it's ridiculous.

Im not white and I rooted for Pavlik to take Taylor's simple ass out but after Pavlik won some people went overboard. Now that they have somebody legit the real feelings are coming out and its nasty. To be fair if youre black and your upset milk dud lsot quit pumping every black fighter to be M Ali or Joe Louis. Taylor was a protected company man more than anything.

Seriously why is there so many threads about PAvlik's skin color? Who gives a fuck about his complexion? People like him because he's a humble guy who can punch holes through walls.
Because it matters whether you like it or not. I'm Korean and if there was a Korean fighter who was great, there would be some Koreans coming in here going overboard. I'm just wondering if there are some white people going overboard because there really is no white, American superstar boxer right now and they are just so happy.

I just think it's not an important question because the answer is obvious. There is a very small minority of Pavlik fans who are influenced by his complexion, but for the most part, his hype is due to other things.

I think it has moer to do with him being AMERICAN than having to do with his color. If "white people" wanted to get excited about having a "white champion" they don't have to look far - the heavier divisions are dominated by Europeans these days. I think that people are excited b/c this guy is American, but he's also a humble "every man", he doesn't talk shit, and he doesn't leave fights up to the judges - he lays dudes out (white, black, Native American or Asian).
What American boxer PERIOD (regardless of color) is such a humble "throwback" that finishes fights inside of 12 rounds? All the top Americans over the past few years are either arrogant assholes or defensive runners that don't excite (see Jones, Mayweather, Wright, Hopkins) - that's why the UFC is killing boxing in the states! Name the last American that actually took challenges in the ring, was underpaid, underappreciated, underrated - and KNOCKED OUT the undisputed champ (in any division)...
That's a load of bullshit, Mayweather gets mad hate because of his culture and because he's a black man who doesn't give a fuck what the public think!!, if Mayweather was white the haters would love his ass without doubt.

I disagree. Mayweather gets hated because he is the best P4P fighter in the world, and everything he says and does is going to be blown out of proportion. He's always going to be scrutinized extra hard since he's the man in boxing right now. And when you are at the top, you're going to have your share of haters.
Of course, if you think that if he was white that a lot of his haters would love him, doesn't it also follow that if he was white some of his die hard fans would end up being haters?

True. Not only did Calabrese insult Boy Floyd but also Wright, Hopkins, and Jones. WTF did Wright ever do to anybody? If thats really the way everybody feels, then im gonna laugh my ass off when Mayweather embarrases Hatton and does the cha cha! Enough of this "everybody was wating for a nice humble guy to come along" shit!

You honestly think that if Floyd was white, he'd be loved by a lot of his current haters?
Look how much hate Hatton gets from Americans who call him fat and a wrestler. He's only hyped in Britain.
Klitschko has his fair share of fans, sure, but Tyson, Holyfield, and any other world class American heavyweight were 1000 times more popular than him.
Miranda had more hype coming into the Miranda-Pavlik fight than Pavlik.
MSG was sold out for Judah-Cotto, neither of which are white.
The Pavlik-Taylor fight wasn't even completely sold out with 5,000 Youngstown fans attending.
And I could go on for hours probably...

i'm mexican and i'm a Pavlik fan without a doubt. As someone said earlier, he goes into fights and ends them the way the fans of the sport want to see. Who wants to see the undisputed middleweight championship match that goes for 12 boring and uninspired rounds. Kelly has all the makings of becoming a BIG star in America and it has nothing to do with skin color. If Miranda had KTFO Pavlik and done the same to Taylor, he too would be ready for megastardom. However, Pavlik is also humble and well spoken in a DLH sort of way and so he can become as big as he wants, provided that he continues to win, especially in impressive fashion.
Just curious because i'm seeing so many outrageous posts about him. You know people comparing "Prime fight X versus Pavlik"? It's pretty ridiculous.
How many posters here hate him because he is white? Based on many posters comments it seems we have many here on ESB who cant handle him being a young white champ in one of boxings most important divisions.

You get too sensitive when i use the word hope. I never said they werent the real deal. When you have a sport in America thats usually dominated by blacks and latinos and a white guy comes around and is actually legit, he will ineveitably (xcuse spelling) get a little overhyped bcuz they dont come around very often. I probably shouldve of left off Tszyu, Calzaghe, and Wlad bcuz i dont think most white Americans go crazy over those guys because theyre not from here and wont get the same kind of affection a American can get. Its sad but true. Anybody that was on this site when Pavlik won saw people speculate on him beating everybody from Hopkins to prime Hagler. If Pavlik was from France or something it wouldnt of been as big of a story and thats where the label "hope" comes from.

I dont see how using the word hope doesnt mean they are not the real deal. The expression denotes a fighter who is hyped beyond his potential. The guys you listed are champions, period. Now guys like Mesi I agree with, but damm your talking about guys on the top.

True, i do call Mesi, Gatti, and Spadafora hypes bcuz thats what they are. I remember when Maxboxing reviewed the Mesi vs Williamson fight, the editor of the site said he saw a lot of Neo nazi types rooting Mesi on. Mesi had NO chance as a real contender and was a great white hype for a lot of bigots. Fans of Spadafora and Gatti arent racists to my knowledge but whenever the topic of Mayweather fighting them, people hoped they they could shut Boy Floyds mouth in the ring even though they had NO chance and Spaddy and Gatti both have criminal records! Pavlik is the real deal but when people rush into his jockstrap and say he can beat everybody from Hops to Hagler to Jones a lot of that is based on people being a little too overjoyed that an American white, not a Euro white, is actually good.

For those of you thinking that this was some racist thread, it's not. I'm not black or white. I just think that some white people are really happy about the fact that an American, white person has really made the big stage and that might cause some to get overly excited. Hey, if my own race did the same, i would get excited also. No big deal. It's natural for people of the same race to root for each other.

Its good to have variety at the top of any sport!
I didnt see people criticizing flips when Manny became champion. Everyone said, good, let them have their champ.
Nobody criticizes Ricans for loving Tito or now Cotto.
Nobody criticizes Mexican fans for loving Barrera, Morales, or the Marquez brothers because they are Mexicans.
But now its a crime to be white and like Pavlik if he is an American white and has made it to the top. There are very few American white boxers at the top of the game, so whats the difference, if I may ask?
My guess is that the people who criticize white people for liking a white champ are the same people who just dislike him because he is white. :good

Overly optimistic? He is the best in the world in his division.
He isnt the best middle who ever lived, anyone knows that. But he is the best out there right now, so why cant people be fans?
Shit, its like saying you cant be a fan of last years Spurs team because the 80īs Lakers would have beat him.
Who cares if he could have been beaten by past champs? He is the best right now, and he proved that.
Don't create threads related to race, it'll only turn into a childish internet war that we don't want here.
